the venn diagram of people who are into joe rogan and louis ck has a fuck-ton of overlap

I have a feeling there's a ton of men who think MeToo went "too far" and what Louis did "y'know, wasn't really that bad" and would be eager to show support.

Based on what I've seen in the reactions to the takes from other comedians who I follow on Twitter, Louis is gonna be juuuuuuuust fine.

I really do love that this thread is dissolving into a taxonomy of an arena-filling comedians fans. Do Kevin Hart next!

I can't think of anything more American than pretending everything is ok after some incredibly fucked up drama because god forbid we engage in any form of uncomfortable introspection and make ourselves better people afterwards. See: Reconstruction.

i doubt he'll get the same "wise teller of truths" platform he received from every late night talk show though, i do suspect a large part of his previous world is going to remain closed off to him.

this is a definitely a thing. "weinstein is a serial rapist, louis just masturbated in front of a few people, what's the big deal?"

on one hand, being a sex creep is bad but on the other hand i really want to hear this middle aged white guy's takes on parades and racism

The infuriating thing is that none of the people angling for a comeback has done anything to deserve it? They've just gone away for a while and hoped that things would die down. They all hurt people but none have tried to help. Louis even seemed to have realized years back that what he did was wrong - there was a story that he'd tried and phone people to say he was sorry years back - yet he never did anything to make up for it. He hurt careers, hurt peoples lives, but he just never ever thought that he should do something good for people in exchange.

i suspect CK will work in some self-flagellating material, and like most material of that kind it will wind up being very self-serving, like it's done to merely add to the complex legend of the man telling the tales. the speaker of harsh truths now turns on himself, whoa.
― omar little, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 17:05 (five years ago) link
yeah Louis SUCKS for doing that hypothetical routine
― 5th Ward Weeaboo (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 17:06 (five years ago) link
self-flagellating, you say?

For all the handwringing about the stifling atmosphere for comedians, I've been waiting for someone to do an exhaustive routine on Louie's downfall but haven't seen any pop up. Are there any? Is it still career suicide to do that? Is Louie the only one allowed to do it?
― Philip Nunez, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 17:12 (five years ago) link
speaking of comebacks...michael richards never really had one after he flipped out on stage, did he?

i mean, he'll kind of have to. I can't imagine him doing show after show and just completely not addressing the situation. at the very least someone somewhere would undoubtedly heckle him about it. this would most likely become a recurring thing.
― evol j, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 17:20 (five years ago) link
xp. he's only appeared in that season of curb and in the kirstie alley sitcom kirstie since that incident but he hadn't had a tv or movie credit since the michael richards show in 2000 before then

this is a good oneLouie (Louis C.K.'s show on FX)
― Οὖτις, Tuesday, 28 August 2018 18:14 (five years ago) link
Louis would do a couple of nights at 3-6,000 seat theatres in the US, and could manage 2-3000 seat theatres in capital cities in England and Australia.
Russell Peters plays 15-20k arenas in English-speaking countries, and tours the actual world.
Michael McIntyre currently has SEVEN nights onsale at a 20k arena in London in October, and another three in a 12k arena the next month in the same city.
Louis was a very well-known American comedian! But the world is not his mailing list, and there are a lot of normies out there.
― ▫◌▫ (sic), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 18:32 (five years ago) link
yeah louis ck plays arenas in the states and canada (also in the UK, where he has played, for example, the 02 Arena)
― ( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 18:42 (five years ago) link
the rule for louis' comeback, as should be the rule in all cases, is that it's perfectly fine to do it AFTER he personally ensures that the people he affected have their careers back. in louis' case that might even be possible. but if it's not possible, for reasons such as one's pustularity extending for decades (weinstein, etc.) such that one's victims are now too old or too dead, then you don't get a comeback. after all, they didn't

Shakey OTM in last three posts
Louis has played arenas, but they weren't where most of his dates took place over the last (say) 15 years, and he wasn't playing ten nights in a row. saying he was bigger than Kevin Hart or Michael McIntyre is an absolute non-starter.
― ▫◌▫ (sic), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 20:15 (five years ago) link
ok fair enough, still like top 5 or what have we if we're talking about box office, and the one who commanded most column inches etc.

I haven't searched, but there must be interviews with people who went to Cosby's last tour or two. I'm assuming they would be oblivious, or assume he's innocent, or just have a lack of judgement toward someone who makes them laugh really hard. Kind of the James Brown / R. Kelly rationale (which I'm not defending) of not wanting to abandon something that really works for you, and somehow being able to dissociate the performance from the violence.
― Yung Detective (Eazy), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 20:48 (five years ago) link
there's also the depressing possibility that enough people don't give a shit about this kind of thing and for a smaller (god I hope) percentage it makes them like the person better
― aloha darkness my old friend (katherine), Tuesday, 28 August 2018 20:49 (five years ago) link
apparently Cosby dates were relatively sparsely attended given the venues, and largely by seniors who really don't keep up on the news. he's been for old ppl since he was middle-aged. that Forbes article seems to only be about US comedians, and there's no sourcing on their $52 million estimate for CK. He's said he was out of liquidity after spending 2 million on the first four episodes of Horace & Pete, and had to borrow to continue production.
(he also said it was no big deal, that he'd be able to pay back the loan on live dates, but unless he's got a REALLY bad alimony set-up, $52 million income should have left him with more than 2 million cash-on-hand. even John Cleese only had to pay a million a year.)

Michael McIntyre is a complete nobody here. Peters is bigger, but nowhere near Hart's level. Those guys play three-thousand seaters here.
