― Οὖτις, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 19:13 (seven years ago)
gotta start going to local shows again now that the kids are older
Get the kids to start a band, you'll go by default.
― Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 20:11 (seven years ago)
Speaking of that, if any ILXors in SF have kids who'd like to be in a band, my kid plays guitar and is looking for some folks to play with.
― DJI, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 20:43 (seven years ago)
We are in the area for the next 9 days. Staying in Mill Valley
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 21:06 (seven years ago)

― that's not my post, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 21:45 (seven years ago)
Yeah but I’m with little kids so I kind of wanted facilities.
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 22 August 2018 21:49 (seven years ago)
If you're with little kids and you're in Mill Valley, go to the Bay Area Discovery Museum.

Aquarium! Alcatraz!
Man, the band Fuck ... My old band played with them a few times and stayed with (possibly Kyle?) wherever his studio was in San Fran. Iirc, it was in a shitty neighborhood, at least at the time.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 August 2018 22:58 (seven years ago)
It was in the Tenderloin so...yes, likely him.

ugh just saw that
― Οὖτις, Thursday, 30 August 2018 20:46 (seven years ago)
this is the first one of these in CA in quite awhile afaik
there are usually at least a dozen of these a year in Oakland public schools
― sarahell, Saturday, 1 September 2018 18:41 (seven years ago)
With actual shootings or just someone bringing a gun
― Οὖτις, Saturday, 1 September 2018 20:32 (seven years ago)
My kids' elementary school is just on the other side of 280, and it got locked down too. As it happens, there was a lockdown drill scheduled for that day. Kids came home singing 'lock, lights, out of sight' gleefully. It's like this generation's 'duck and cover' :(
― fajita seas, Saturday, 1 September 2018 20:37 (seven years ago)
lockdowns.

Oakland is approaching this better than SF, imo. They're offering the equitable playing field that Lime is asking for, but with more demands on the companies. For example:
The ordinance also requires dockless scooters to be distributed equitably throughout Oakland, and no less than 50 percent of scooters will have to be deployed in Oakland's "communities of concern," with high populations of minority and/or low-income residents.

These companies dont deserve an equitable playing field

"unlawful bias" is a hilarious choice of words here

at least oakland's lower density means you're not constantly tripping over abandoned scooters like you would in downtown SF
― Scam jam, thank you ma’am (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 20 September 2018 00:16 (seven years ago)
I'm going to be in Oakland in a couple of weeks. Never been! I think I have a little free time, what should I do/see/eat?
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 20 September 2018 01:31 (seven years ago)
Uptown is all 'revitalized' and has bars and some galleries. Grand Avenue has a lot of very good restauarants; Lake Merritt is very lovely if the day is nice.
― akm, Thursday, 20 September 2018 03:42 (seven years ago)
Go to ProArts Gallery in downtown oakland and say hello to our own sarahell
― akm, Thursday, 20 September 2018 03:43 (seven years ago)
One of the best things about Oakland is all the killer Ethiopian food. Cafe Romanat is one of my favorites, but there are a bunch of very good options.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 20 September 2018 04:55 (seven years ago)
Azit has killer Korean cheese fries.

well, parts of Oakland that is the case. Not my part.
― sarahell, Thursday, 20 September 2018 19:36 (seven years ago)
in terms of "what to do" in Oakland -- it depends what you like to do. If you're into hiking/outdoorsy stuff, there are some nice hikes and woodsy stuff. If you like drinking at tiki bars, we have those. If you like goth dj nights, we have lots of those. if you are into craft beer -- there is a lot of that, too. If you like looking at industrial buildings in various states of decay and gentrification/renovation, we have a lot of those as well.
― sarahell, Thursday, 20 September 2018 19:39 (seven years ago)
I think there's some dumb music festival happening in the park by the port that used to be held in SF going down in a few weeks. The park is dope tho.
― sarahell, Thursday, 20 September 2018 19:41 (seven years ago)
one thing to notice about the scooters in Oakland - it mostly community members and kids using them rather than techies getting to work and what not. i'm pro scooter.
― kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 20 September 2018 19:45 (seven years ago)
I noticed that too

idk, even the on most dense sidewalks of Uptown I don't trip over a million scooters the same way I did walking to work in SOMA, but I hear you. I can't say whether they're a social good or ill but the way people drive on them I am amazed that no one has been killed yet.
