i feel like we should switch the discussion on this thread.

i left ilx because i was concerned about how much time i spent there and how hard it was to regulate my usage. i returned because i missed the sense of community and i do like some of the people who post here. also the idea of the board—a community of enthusiasts, sure, but also critics—is appealing, because so much online stuff is tribal and seems hostile to the critical mindset. the idea of ilx, to me, was the idea that people could have productive disagreements and also that the internet can be a forum for discussion.

this is seen even in just the layout. it's just text and your name. it's a messageboard for writers.

i don't feel overly proud of my posting history, honestly, because i can be kind of self-indulgent and impulsive. but compared to what the rest of the internet is (or has become) ilx is a kind of beacon of hope. i've had real discussions here that challenged me and that i have benefited from.

if, as a collective project, we could try to make this more about art and culture and criticism and less about personal beefs and zomg trump and other stuff that is rampant everywhere on the internet, i would like to be part of that collective project. i know i am guilty of posting about random news cycle bullshit more than most -- maybe more than anyone -- that's not the point. there are still interesting things posted on this board everyday -- perhaps more on ilm than ilx. (i've always been more an ilx poster bc i find it hard to keep up with the ilm crew and the rate at which they consume new music)

yeah, i agree with you. if there are dynamics in the community that are alienating people with dissenting/alternate views--people who want to express a perspective rather than join a chorus--then that is going to eventually lead to the death of the board.

i'm not trying to call anyone out specifically i just feel like something went awry today and maybe it's worth thinking about if we want to keep ilx going

Like, I kind of get writing extra colloquially or absurdly but at a certain point no one is taking the time to read it.

assuming as a default that this must be an attack on you personally is frankly a bit of a problem

it's almost as if ilx has a longstanding and insular culture and posting style that is often not immediately intelligible and takes time and practice to understand.

When darraghmac posts past 3 sentences and I can't understand it, I assume he's wasted or it's performance art. But I try not to feel irritated by it.
