flaneur brayin (darraghmac), Friday, 17 August 2018 16:37 (seven years ago)

Melted Belts, Priced To Move (Old Lunch), Friday, 17 August 2018 16:42 (seven years ago)

Doctor Casϵϵno (Doctor Casino), Friday, 17 August 2018 17:08 (seven years ago)

It's Fræd!

(It's literally pronounced that way, rather than with an English e. Frætheræk)

Frederik B, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:22 (seven years ago)

now i'm learning something!

Doctor Casϵϵno (Doctor Casino), Friday, 17 August 2018 17:26 (seven years ago)

what is the mushy ae supposed to sound like? like in encyclop(ae)dia? freethereek?

challops trap house (Will M.), Friday, 17 August 2018 17:30 (seven years ago)

lol, that looks like a hashtag from that season of Game of Thrones where Theon got castrated.

Frederik B, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:32 (seven years ago)

Like the 'ea' in 'thread' or 'dead'

Frederik B, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:34 (seven years ago)

... or like the "e" in "Fred"

Doctor Casϵϵno (Doctor Casino), Friday, 17 August 2018 17:36 (seven years ago)

surely if you pronounce it in Danish the vowel sound of the first e is more like the a in "pat"

niels, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:36 (seven years ago)

wait... so it sounds exactly like an english E

or do other english accents pronounce the E in "med" different from the ea in "dead"? i am perplexed

xp lol

challops trap house (Will M.), Friday, 17 August 2018 17:37 (seven years ago)

as is the i

niels, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:37 (seven years ago)

and the middle e like the e in "the"

niels, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:37 (seven years ago)

I think fratherrack comes closer

niels, Friday, 17 August 2018 17:38 (seven years ago)

googles a suitable reference worth noting that English has around 15 vowel sounds, whereas well-organized languages tend to get by with 5 or 6. The choice of vowel sound to use in many words also tends to vary by region.

where i grew up you were lucky if you heard two different vowel sounds, mostly it was just a growl and then kind of another louder growl

challops trap house (Will M.), Friday, 17 August 2018 18:06 (seven years ago)

I think the Danes had quite a bit of influence on the development of English.

Scottish Country Twerking (Tom D.), Friday, 17 August 2018 18:10 (seven years ago)

these vowels all got imported from somewhere that's for sure

That's Swedish, and after being called out for calling Ireland part of the 'British Isles' I'm really not in a mood to be confused with those ässhöles. Jüst stöp it!

Frederik B, Friday, 17 August 2018 19:07 (seven years ago)

if denmark is so great, why does Dane (almost) rhyme with LAME

Because those who invented English were racist.

Frederik B, Friday, 17 August 2018 19:17 (seven years ago)

Lol, didn't you know that? Yeah, it's on the 'British literature is shit' thread, which again was prompted by a remark of mine on the 'British cinema is shit' thread, and at that point I'd probably shat enough on, um, 'the wet and foggy isles west of glorious Jutland', was that what we ended up agreeing to?
