she has a NEOLIB husband so they rag on that whenever she comes up
― global tetrahedron, Friday, 27 July 2018 16:31 (five years ago) link
pretty sure the only thing they've ever ragged on her for (besides a...difference of opinion on satire) is the school segregation thing
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:32 (five years ago) link
...which I literally only just learned this second was not actually true lol
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:34 (five years ago) link
In what sense is it not true?
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 27 July 2018 16:36 (five years ago) link
there was a quote from her husband in the NYT

I guess not so much "not true" as "open to interpretation if you're feeling charitable"

She gets lumped into the pointlessness of Stewart/Oliver/etc. attacks (which have become more rare since Chapo has become the socialist Daily Show).

By this characterization no parent who has ever fought school integration is actually racist or classist. They always come up with rhetoric that gives them plausible deniability.
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 27 July 2018 17:18 (five years ago) link
I agree that it's unfair to lump in Bee/Oliver/Stewart. I have a better impression of Bee and Stewart than I do of Oliver fwiw.
same
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 27 July 2018 17:29 (five years ago) link
I mean Snopes is really going beyond its mandate with that one. Anyone with an inkling about the way NYC schools are zoned and its racial and economic history can see that class and race were the biggest factors in the opposition the the city's plan.
― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 27 July 2018 17:42 (five years ago) link
it's odd that Snopes is mostly addressing a 2017 revival of that story.

― Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 3 August 2018 00:48 (five years ago) link
M McCain stuff reminded of the M McArdle stuff because it's just so bad and stupid that making fun of it starts to become depressing rather than cathartic.
― ryan, Friday, 3 August 2018 00:52 (five years ago) link
It probably should have been a shorter segment, worth it for the reveal of Felix's bone-deep hatred of American protestantism tho
― wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Friday, 3 August 2018 00:55 (five years ago) link
Sure but reading the inner monologue of these people on occasion does help remind you not to slip into any kind of illusion that society is a meritocracy.

bone-deep hatred of American protestantism tho
this is a weirdly common thread among a lot of younger trump era leftists. the cultural critique that runs from max weber's "protestant ethic" to christopher lasch seems as much a part of it (perhaps unconsciously) as anything from the marxist tradition.

you have to remember that for people in their mid 30s, a lot of our peers that were churchgoing in their youth and broke away associate the whole enterprise with the heel-dragging on progressive social issues, or in more conservative communities, entrenched bigotrythere are things to admire in the protestant ethic but when your experience started with the satanic panic years and ended during the fight against gay marriage...
