that's really cool james! what did you use to make it?

beware: when you post GIFs on twitter, it converts them to a video format and then introduces a laggy pause before each repetition of the frames, thus destroying the smooth quality that GIFs are supposed to have. twitter pretends to be a supporter of GIFs, but it's a cruel façade!

i usually upload images to imgur, which has an absolutely awful community (they're corporately bonded with Reddit, now), but at least they let you just upload GIFs without changing them to a different file format. here's what your GIF looks like there (i assumed that each frame (6 frames, each .1 seconds, I'm guessing?):

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 18 July 2018 15:51 (seven years ago)

Thanks for that! I wondered what had happened to slow it down.
I altered the original image using Deepart, with a picture of static rotated four different ways as the style images to use.

there is perhaps a better thread for asking this question, but I'm looking for a simple free/cheap application to superimpose text on images (to create album covers), preferably something I can learn to work with by watching a 30 min tutorial - any recommendations? (so far using Word and MS Paint, works OK but thinking I can do better...)

niels, Friday, 27 July 2018 07:27 (seven years ago)

GIMP is the standard free photoshop recommendation - it's a photoshop clone, and it looks like it has plenty of tutorials as well!

Karl Malone, Friday, 27 July 2018 15:26 (seven years ago)

NO

mh, Friday, 27 July 2018 16:11 (seven years ago)

what platform are you looking for this on, niels? windows?

mh, Friday, 27 July 2018 16:11 (seven years ago)

yes was looking for a Windows solution

I downloaded gimp a few years back but never got into it, might give it another try

niels, Saturday, 28 July 2018 09:34 (seven years ago)

Paint.Net is a free app that’s like a more fleshed out Paint, decent starting point

gimp has always been oversold and undercooked imo

i spent the last two days laboring over a video of morphing giuliani faces singing a personalized birthday song for my friend's 37th birthday

Karl Malone, Sunday, 29 July 2018 07:03 (seven years ago)

holy shit there are 3036 messages in this thread. i'm sorry

Karl Malone, Sunday, 29 July 2018 07:04 (seven years ago)

thanks mh will check it out!

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 29 August 2018 15:39 (seven years ago)

uh, conferencecall.biz has sort of gotten revived recently. right now there are over 100 people on there, and it hasn't been like that since early 2014. usually there are maybe 1-4 visitors, tops.

i guess most of it is coming from https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=17850902

Karl Malone, Thursday, 30 August 2018 00:27 (seven years ago)

it's kind of terrible timing because my fledgling new homepage totally sucks, and i was starting to work on revamping the entire thing. wish it was in better shape!

Karl Malone, Thursday, 30 August 2018 00:29 (seven years ago)

hadn't seen that it's hella cool

niels, Thursday, 30 August 2018 18:22 (seven years ago)

thanks! about 1/3 to 1/2 of the voices that you hear are ILXors, so that's fun too. also ILX helped me brainstorm the whole thing (77 thread link redacted), and ilxor allen/etaeoe basically revamped the entire code to make it work much, much better.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 30 August 2018 18:31 (seven years ago)

oh fuck, that's a link to a 77 thread, sorry. i'll ask the mods to remove that shortly.

(I asked that the thread be moved to 77 back in the day because i had a freakout about the government (my employer at the time) finding out)

Karl Malone, Thursday, 30 August 2018 18:32 (seven years ago)

a couple short videos (i wish i would have done a better job on...both of these. whatever)

I attempted to edit this to extend Montana's final death slide down the wall from 8 seconds to 25 seconds. I succeeded in one sense, and failed in another (both of which could be called "technical"). Mainly failed, but sharing anyway pic.twitter.com/ZqKLuxAvqU

You won't believe this, but The Bangles contacted me and asked me to publish this here, on the afternoon of election day. Seems a little late to me, but here it is. pic.twitter.com/uHR43i00fu

i made all the images on the b-52's poll. it was fun to try to make them all reference the cover of the album they belonged to, along with some sort of reference to the title or lyrics

i wish i could embed this video, but it's on vimeo

https://vimeo.com/304208565

it's a 54 second loop. i've been thinking of how to make things where different mediums start to blend and interact with each other. like, this is edited version of what really happened, but then what if you could also set up the real physical site just like that and recreate the feeling of walking by a devoted dog...i swear all this makes sense on some level, uh. i wrote about it a bit here too

Karl Malone, Monday, 3 December 2018 20:10 (seven years ago)

i went ahead and uploaded the one i was (drunkenly, in character) talking about above to youtube:

https://youtu.be/vPzlELZUzXk

i spent the last week on this one, though:

https://youtu.be/91ypRZqxdE8

it takes a while to get going, but it's meant to play on a loop. kinda hard to explain but i see it in the same universe as the other video, in the terrifying dramatizing moments of everyday banal life genre

poor Michael McKean, trapped in your NixonTrump GIF!

Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Wednesday, 19 December 2018 23:33 (seven years ago)

it's actually Reagan, not Trump, although I definitely see the resemblance at various point. i liked this transformation the most, even though i didn't actually use it in the video or GIF:

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 23:44 (seven years ago)

xp i'm really interested in using Processing with GIFs, but in a sort of different way. a long time ago i did a workshop on Arduiono/Processing and made a little device that adjusted the framerate of the GIF with a slider. the idea back then was to then replace the slider with some sort of interactive sensor-based thing so that looping images would speed up or slow down based on what in the room did. but my arduino crapped out on me soon afterward, i forgot about Processing as i got distracted with whatever shit seemed important that day, and now i don't know how any of it worked. this is a pattern!

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 19 December 2018 23:53 (seven years ago)

those tutorials are great though! i'm going to bookmark it for when i drift back into processing (i'm still focused on max/msp right now). i really liked these examples:

DJI, Friday, 8 March 2019 18:40 (seven years ago)

whoa, that looks so cool! first wave already sold out, alas. and it conspicuously doesn't mention the price anywhere on the website, but earlier promotional things said they hoped to ship it for under $1000, so...alas.

but honestly, i already have a piece of software (madmapper) which pretty much does the same thing (although it requires you to leave your laptop up and running beside the projector, which is annoying). my main problem hasn't been with not having the hardware/tech, it's been my lack of motivation. the last several months has been starting antidepressants and getting back into the working world, and that's been pretty much 95% of my waking life. but i've been relatively happier, too, so i'm not complaining too much. dunno - things have been weird
