England were playing such a high tempo game first half they were bound to tire. And replacements from the bench not nearly as effective- ie rashford for sterling

Fair enough result in the end, England all over Croatia for most of the first half but clearly ran themselves out by the second half. England had everything except a proper creative midfielder but it's a fantastic achievement nonetheless. Croatia clearly better over two hours. I hope they destroy France in the final.

Have to say for about an hour or so Kyle Walker was a fucking colossus. Maguire too.Any middling Premiership club that tries to come in for Southgate can fuck off imo.

Just came from Sheffield city centre to get a bite to eat and the town was buzzing. Loads of police ofc.
ok i have a question: the various ppl who said around or before HT "if ENG don't get a second before 60 mins, they will lose" -- julio, neanderthal, a couple others i think -- is this judgment based on knowing who is going to get tired first, or on something else?― mark s, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

Shape of the match and what I've seen of both teams throughout (with a bit of luck lol). Croatia got nervous and tight after the early Eng lead but even in the first half they were putting bits and pieces together. Eng's approach is a couple of passes crash bang wallop in a set piece. Works with any team bar the ones that can play the stuff for any length of time. Thought the break would re-energise Eng to have a go and kill Croatia off but as long as they weathered this they had the game, composure and experience (they knew they could play the ref and they play him alright, so some extra physicality to keep Eng down) to see it through.
I think many ppl here knew this tbh(?) but I really don't care for this Eng side or Southgate and it helps when making the call.
I said Belgium last night (and said so here) but my head was France. I really wanted a Croatia - Belgium final. Guaranteed first time winner.

Head says France but the heart is Croatia. I don't think it matters they played 3 period of ET, even if it was all 90 France have too much for them and I think they played their bad final in Euro '16. Mixture of enough bursts of flair but that conservatism through experience that actually gets the job done.

Luka Modric has accused English journalists and pundits of showing a lack of respect to Croatia’s players and admitted his teammates had used criticism to motivate them to victory against England in their World Cup semi-final.Modric impressed as Croatia came from behind to win after extra time in Moscow but the Real Madrid midfielder was scathing in his reaction towards sections of the English media, some of whom had predicted an easy win for Gareth Southgate’s side.“People were talking … English journalists, pundits from television,” he told ITV. “They underestimated Croatia tonight and that was a huge mistake. All these words from them we take, we were reading and we were saying: ‘OK, today we will see who will be tired.’ They should be more humble and respect their opponents more.“We showed again that we were not tired – we dominated the game mentally and physically. We should have killed the game even before extra time. This is an amazing achievement for us – it’s a dream come true after such a long time. We are in the final and that is the biggest success in Croatia history. We have to be proud.”Sime Vrsaljko added: “The all-round perception was that this is a new-look England who have changed their ways of punting long balls upfield but when we pressed them it turned out that they haven’t.”
