For real thought that was a massive let-off for Martinez and I'd be quite surprised if the Belgium players weren't in semi-open mutiny by tomorrow.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:04 (five years ago) link

Can't begrudge belgium that really, they had to dig deep and take the game by the scruff of the neck, and they did so, silencing the doubters (like me) who thought they were all just a bunch of flat-track primadonnas who couldn't do it when the chips are down.

is Fellaini bad or is it really just United fans drivel

Van Horn Street, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:05 (five years ago) link

at this rate of how the round of 16 has been, Colombia-England will either end a scoreless draw after 120 minutes or will be 5-4 off of a ball Kane heads in with the back of his head

I mean, I haven't really been silenced, I'm still posting.

that was my favourite half of football in absolutely ages. japan totally outplaying belgium, keeping it smart and putting together some really good attacking moves, lovely crossfield passes that I will be dreaming about for a long time, weird lil uzi looping header, martinez managing to make killer subs yet again somehow and total agonising heartbreak at the end. world cup football is the best football.

also just want to point out i've had inui in my fantasy football team from the start and that's why i'm top of the league bb

ogmor, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:06 (five years ago) link

is this the first game so far where VAR has not been mentioned once?

I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Monday, 2 July 2018 20:07 (five years ago) link

this match is one that makes me glad I quit gambling. can't imagine how many things I would have destroyed had I had money on Japan straight up.

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Monday, 2 July 2018 20:08 (five years ago) link

VAR was briefly mentioned prior to one corner, they were looking for a handball and didn't find one

Martinez is fundamentally a berk, but a huge trade-up on Marc Wilmots

are you a bad poster or is it just this post?

Number None, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:10 (five years ago) link

that didn't answer my question!

Van Horn Street, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:11 (five years ago) link

ok shot of Kawashima with tears in eyes...

;_;

Truly those Japan players had earned a blub or two, unlike Neymar crying after winning a group game against Costa Rica.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Monday, 2 July 2018 20:12 (five years ago) link

i still sort of love martinez. he is definitely entertaining and it would be amazing if he managed to win the world cup

ogmor, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:12 (five years ago) link

Fellaini is not a "bad" player per se, but he lends himself to a particular style of football that doesn't endear itself to fans. He's also a crutch for tactically limited managers

Number None, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:13 (five years ago) link

fellaini is one of the great villains of contemporary football

ogmor, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:15 (five years ago) link

A nominal central midfielder who owes his entire continued career to playing like Niall Quinn for five minutes every game.

Matt DC, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:18 (five years ago) link

kind of looking forward to fellaini v brazil tbh

I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Monday, 2 July 2018 20:20 (five years ago) link

not a player you'd ever want to see near a starting lineup but i don't get ppl who act like he is utterly worthless, he's obviously a fantastic option to have with 10 mins to play

Windsor Davies, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:20 (five years ago) link

you've already failed in some fundamental way when you have to resort to that option is the thing

I had a small bet on Japan to win, bet365 actually awarded it after they'd gone 2-0 up the suckerz

should only put Fellaini in with 8 1/2 minutes to play, imo

tbf to Fellaini he is good enough to make 25 appearances for West Brom next season.

Alan Alba (Tom D.), Monday, 2 July 2018 20:26 (five years ago) link

you think witsel is pissed that fellaini steals all the fro-tention?

supreme court justice samuel lance-ito (voodoo chili), Monday, 2 July 2018 20:26 (five years ago) link

obv feel sorry for japan but that was the sort of amazing knock out game they've deserved for a while. still buzzing from that

ogmor, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:28 (five years ago) link

Woman I work with fancies the shorts off Fellaini. Phew, not half.

you don't ever want to see a guy like Fellaini become a starting player for your team, i get that, but acting like you're above lumping it long in the last tens mins when your original plan isnt working (especially when the change actually works, as it did tonight) is such bullshit

Windsor Davies, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:37 (five years ago) link

Open mutiny against Martinez? FFS Matt

imago, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:37 (five years ago) link

Not to tempt fate but quite a drop-off of VAR madness since the knockout stage began no?

shaqiri tip (nashwan), Monday, 2 July 2018 20:39 (five years ago) link

i made such an insane noise when inui scored. lads, i love football

ogmor, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:41 (five years ago) link

so how many spurs goals is that now?

I'd Rather Kecak (NickB), Monday, 2 July 2018 20:41 (five years ago) link

I count 14 from past and present players.

there are levels to this thing. Obviously going long to the big lad is not a mortal sin in and of itself, it's when it's your only Plan B that it becomes a problem. And that's been the case with three consecutive underperforming Utd managers

Number None, Monday, 2 July 2018 20:44 (five years ago) link

Van Horn Street, Monday, 2 July 2018 21:35 (five years ago) link

it's when it's your only Plan B that it becomes a problem

how many plans do you imagine the average manager has

Windsor Davies, Monday, 2 July 2018 21:35 (five years ago) link

hes great
football is great
cant wait for the 48 team fifa world cups

nxd, Monday, 2 July 2018 21:36 (five years ago) link

fellaini player manager knocking out spain in the round of 32 2k22

nxd, Monday, 2 July 2018 21:37 (five years ago) link

problem with utd is not that Fellaini = a rubbish plan b, it's that your plan A is so shit to begin with

Windsor Davies, Monday, 2 July 2018 21:37 (five years ago) link

I feel like I'm talking to a wall here

Number None, Monday, 2 July 2018 21:40 (five years ago) link

Don't you get it WD, despite the fact that Belgium is a country of 10 millions and with limited ressources they shouldn't play ever Fellaini ever because he represents the long post-Fergie decline of United.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 2 July 2018 21:41 (five years ago) link

you are genuinely quite dense aren't you

Number None, Monday, 2 July 2018 21:42 (five years ago) link

Perhaps yes, but I have the humility to face the fact that some more brillant football minds than you and I have used Fellaini in some high leverage footballing situations.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 2 July 2018 21:43 (five years ago) link

FFS take this to an ILF thread
