18 yo songwriter Sean is terrifyingly beautiful and so self-possessed it's just not even fair. It is possible to be that 100% authentic and unguarded if you're a well-nurtured homeschooler uncorrupted by the whole idea of teenage-hood? Or is he secretly psychopathic?

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Friday, 29 June 2018 22:37 (five years ago) link

He seemed more off than well-nurtured.

Yerac, Friday, 29 June 2018 22:38 (five years ago) link

He was freaking me out until he started cooking an omelette.

Yerac, Friday, 29 June 2018 22:39 (five years ago) link

he was a character all right, buti don't agree with orbit's assessment, to put it mildly.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Friday, 29 June 2018 22:56 (five years ago) link

I was cringing so hard when they took him to paintball or laser tag whatever it was, and the guys had clearly set those teens up - “I like your necklace” “that is a great shirt” etc. he sounded like an AI character out of Black Mirror.

He seemed to loosen up a lot more near the end, once he saw his new place.

just1n3, Saturday, 30 June 2018 01:59 (five years ago) link

he was fine considering the fact of the adoption and the homeschooling and the big liza minelli-ish songs but it kinda seemed to be more about making him actually seem normal in an 18 yo way, obv. yeah, he was a talented guy tho and i wouldn't want all 18 yo's to conform to what 18 yo's are like, but still.

It’s a shame Tan gave him the wardrobe of a 45-year-old.

Madchen, Saturday, 30 June 2018 06:20 (five years ago) link

He previously had the wardrobe of a seventy year-old, though, so I reckon Tan was meeting him halfway.

trishyb, Saturday, 30 June 2018 20:46 (five years ago) link

Liza Minelli is 72.

those SEAN jackets were hysterical and awful and adorable

If Burning Man dude didn't grow up with an emotionally abusive or unavailable hyperachieving father, I am ilx's most beloved poster.

Three Word Username, Saturday, 14 July 2018 19:46 (five years ago) link

Whose father from that decade wasn't like that?

Yerac, Saturday, 14 July 2018 19:50 (five years ago) link

The ones who didn't hyperachieve or who were emotionally available.

Three Word Username, Saturday, 14 July 2018 19:51 (five years ago) link

Ari the gamer dude has some kind of addiction problem. I know that style of lying all too well. Dunno whether it's gaming or the weed with roots in hell or something they kept out of the episode, but he's for sure an addict. He also had a look of sheer terror at certain points -- not just when he got caught in a lie -- that made that episode hard to watch.

Three Word Username, Monday, 16 July 2018 08:34 (five years ago) link

I was really curious if he chipped his tooth from eating sunflower seeds.

Yerac, Monday, 16 July 2018 09:35 (five years ago) link

Tan needs to stop making everyone do a french tuck.

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 16 July 2018 16:17 (five years ago) link

Tan has some surprise super nice arms (as seen in the emmy instagram video).

Yerac, Monday, 16 July 2018 16:30 (five years ago) link

eight months pass...

Tan needs to stop making everyone do a french tuck.

I know this is his thing but one ep into s3 and I'm already screaming "NO MORE FRENCH TUCKS, GAWD!" at the screen.

lol

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 16 March 2019 05:02 (five years ago) link

cried in the first episode WE’RE BACK BABY

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 16 March 2019 05:36 (five years ago) link

I felt like Rob, whose wife died and who was moving into a new house, could have used some Marie Kondo magic to help him thank his old house and his old stuff. An opportunity for a crossover episode if ever I saw one.

trishyb, Sunday, 17 March 2019 12:29 (five years ago) link

This show should go on forever. And I love, love they regularly don't just do straight men anymore.

Yerac, Sunday, 17 March 2019 16:54 (five years ago) link

yeah me too

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 17 March 2019 17:18 (five years ago) link

The second ep. was so sad. Rob, the camp director, seemed a great human who'd totally given up on himself.

remy bean, Sunday, 17 March 2019 21:49 (five years ago) link

yeah def

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 17 March 2019 22:10 (five years ago) link

my eyes started leaking furiously during the jess episode
karamo finally did something useful and bobby got to take her to meet her sister <3
so tender

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 18 March 2019 23:52 (five years ago) link

i mean she had met her sister before but not for a long time -- "meet up with" more accurate if we are being nitpicky

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Monday, 18 March 2019 23:53 (five years ago) link

yeah that episode was so great

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 18 March 2019 23:57 (five years ago) link

yeah and i also love it whenever Bobby gets extended airtime - he just does so much and is so good at putting in little touches that reflect the client's personality and needs.

I'm up to the grieving dad episode and the engraved memory chest got me all choked up.

Roz, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 07:01 (five years ago) link

Only just started watching this (halfway through S1) but I’m amazed how much Bobby gets done in a few days!

The episode I watched last night was AJ coming out to his stepmum. Really lovely.

michaellambert, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 12:18 (five years ago) link

I saw that Janelle Monae tweeted at Jess. *hearts*

Yerac, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 12:19 (five years ago) link

xp Bobby and an entire TV/design crew

zama roma ding dong (Eric H.), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 12:59 (five years ago) link

Of course.

michaellambert, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 15:30 (five years ago) link

i was glad bobby got to do something personally meaningful that didn't involve home renovations
he has lived a hard life. i didn't know he dropped out of high school!

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 15:44 (five years ago) link

Or had been homeless since 15! I love all of them but his history is very affecting.

Bless these people and this show for traveling the country finding deeply traumatized people who are incapable of being functional, whole people, and healing them of their wounds GENUINELY, as far as I can tell. This is a mitzvah. They're providing mental/emotional healthcare tbh.

And so often their unspoken opponent in a person's life is either bigotry or poverty or both. An indictment of America imo.

I don't remember his words but when Tan got choked up at the end of the Jess ep, I broke down.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 16:36 (five years ago) link

i think specifically about how antoni was like "college was all about potlucks, someone brings the risotto blablabla" meanwhile we (and jess) are aware of her years of 100% ramen diet and he doesn't appear to understand that not everyone can relate to potlucks and abundance of community or food.

and then bobby takes her to meet up with her sister and i felt so much better, like at least someone here understands her in a profound way that she will be able to feel. they are definitely out to put a balm on human misery and some of them are def better at it than others. bobby is a quiet hero.

i basically cannot get through an episode of this show without some welling up

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 19:28 (five years ago) link

would rate the fab five in order of usefulness bobby, jonathan, tan, karamo, antoni

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 19:30 (five years ago) link

I definitely paused what I was doing when Antoni talked about risotto at potlucks in college.

Yerac, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 19:32 (five years ago) link

so tone deaf. antoni is definitely a rich kid tho

he dropped the fact that he was a restaurateur in the episode with the jones sisters and i was thinking "how bad is antoni's resto?"

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

still mad about those peanuts

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

I literally was just looking the menu for his restaurant. I remember when it opened it got mediocre reviews. Lukewarm paleo/vegan bowls.

Yerac, Tuesday, 19 March 2019 19:42 (five years ago) link

On the summer camp ep, in the car, someone asks if any of them ever went to summer camp and Karamo says, "No, we were too poor for that" and Antoni is like, "I was just going to say something about going to horse camp and now I feel bad" and K is like, "It's okay, we know you were rich." lol

But otoh in some ep A is giving a cooking lesson and says, "My family wasn't functional, but at least we ate dinner together" and you feel like that's a pretty thin veneer he's putting on that, so, you know, everybody does have their own stories.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 20:22 (five years ago) link

i like how we learn little bits and pieces of the fab 5’s history over time, and the way it is shared to usually help reinforce that x person isbt alone

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 19 March 2019 20:55 (five years ago) link

I keep waiting for more of JVN's story tbh.
