what she's trying to say is they betray her, they didn't keep their promise, they trick her, and she doesn't care anymore.

frogbs, Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:17 (eight years ago)

Jesus, if even one kid is permanently taken from his parent, this may be the lasting shame of the most shameful people ever in charge of this country.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:18 (eight years ago)

As we all tend to do when we're absolutely unconcerned about a thing that doesn't bother us in the slightest, President Trump is once again loudly broadcasting how little he and those in his circle care about something (which in this case would be the lies of the Fake News Media, and definitely not the attention being drawn to Melania's insane wardrobe choice).

Rep. Bob Excellentfrappuccino (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:20 (eight years ago)

They should have this song at the rallies in future:

Josh, I'd say that eventuality is a near-certainty, and for probably far more than one child. And these monsters won't feel the slightest twinge of shame or regret.

Rep. Bob Excellentfrappuccino (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:22 (eight years ago)

Naw they should play this song at his rallies

First lady Melania Trump on Thursday visited unaccompanied migrant children in a shelter in McAllen, Texas, a sign of goodwill and compassion even as her husband refuses to address the thousands of families already separated as a result of his “zero tolerance” prosecution policy.

Yet, the jacket Melania Trump wore on her way to McAllen quickly caused a stir.

Bitch Media identified the coat the first lady was wearing as she climbed the stairs to her plane: “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” it reads.

a) she didn't realize the jacket had writing on it or forgot about it
b) she honestly didn't think anyone would make a connection between "I Really Don't Care" and her visit with migrant children. (spokesperson's explanation)
c) she wants to send a message to everyone that she no longer cares about the fake news media, because of their dishonesty (trump's explanation, i think?)
d) she wants to send a message that "I really don't care" about something else (the migrants? but then why did she visit with them?)
e)?

I mean, I don't think it's any more complicated than a general statement of intent wrt engaging with the world-at-large.

Rep. Bob Excellentfrappuccino (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:26 (eight years ago)

If anything, it's refreshingly honest.

Rep. Bob Excellentfrappuccino (Old Lunch), Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:27 (eight years ago)

her spokesperson:

Today’s visit w the children in Texas impacted @flotus greatly. If media would spend their time & energy on her actions & efforts to help kids - rather than speculate & focus on her wardrobe - we could get so much accomplished on behalf of children. #SheCares #ItsJustAJacket

— Stephanie Grisham (@StephGrisham45) June 21, 2018

interesting angle, this is all the media's fault for drawing attention to the gigantic words written on the back of her jacket. and in fact, if the media would stop paying so much attention to what she wears all the time, maybe we would make some real progress with these incarcerated children. but they can't, because they're too busy covering her wardrobe.

Hours after the photo of her departure outfit went viral, she again donned the jacket to disembark the plane at an Air Force base outside Washington DC.

She ignored question from reporters as she entered the presidential motorcade.

the old are they really dumb or are they evil question emerges again

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:35 (eight years ago)

not defending Melania, but I thought the jacket's message was supposed to be 'I don't really care about being fashion forward, this is a $39 jacket' and that this whole thing was just cluelessness and bad optics

Dan S, Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:41 (eight years ago)

Except... she continued to wear it

circa1916, Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:42 (eight years ago)

I've lost all ability to give anyone close to Trump any benefit of the doubt at this point.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:42 (eight years ago)

yeah, the vox story adds this detail:

Though the first lady arrived at Andrews Air Force base in Maryland wearing the jacket, by the time the plane landed in McAllen, Texas, she had changed into a far more innocuous cream colored jacket instead.

In a rather brazen move, however, she changed back into the jacket upon landing back in Maryland later in the afternoon, despite the swift criticism and the fact that the temperature was 81 degrees. This time around, photographers were also given full view of the offending garment.

if someone wrote a gigantic message on the back of my jacket i'd probably be google translating that shit before wearing it outside

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:56 (eight years ago)

Dan S, Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:56 (eight years ago)

when you google translate “I Really Don’t Care, Do U?” into slovenian, it comes out"Res ne skrbi, naredim U?". if you translate that back into english, it's

"Do not worry, I do U?"

this is all getting sicker than anyone could have imagined

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Thursday, 21 June 2018 22:59 (eight years ago)

"Do not worry, I do U?"

So the jacket *is* an off-brand MAD foldout.

Martin Landau Ballet (Leee), Thursday, 21 June 2018 23:02 (eight years ago)

Like I almost want to believe this is some strategy to get the current narrative out of the news but this plays directly into the “these people don’t care about kids” thing and plus we know no one in this administration talks to each other

frogbs, Thursday, 21 June 2018 23:05 (eight years ago)

Sometimes when I am volunteering at my kid's old elementary school I ask a kindergartner or 1st grader what, without them looking, their shirt says. Much of the time they've forgotten or didn't pay attention or otherwise have no idea their shirt says "Batman" or "Unicorns are awesome" or something like that. It's kind of adorable. In a child.

some garbage from the nyt

So who was the target of that not-so-hidden message? That the first lady had shed the jacket by the time she disembarked in Texas may indicate it was not, in fact, the families at the heart of the immigration issue. Besides, there are numerous alternative possibilities, when you start to think about it.

...Or maybe, just maybe, it was a message for those of us who like to read messages into her clothes. One that said, “I’m going to wear whatever I want and I don’t care what you think about it.” After all, she wore the jacket again deplaning later at Andrews — wore it unapologetically knowing all the hoo-ha it had caused, the confusion and umbrage, the distraction from what she said was her core message of compassion. Wore it as if to give direct proof to the words on her back. That would be kind of meta.

so maybe, just maybe, she finally decided to word-attack those of us who like to read messages into her clothes, and decided to do it on the way to the visit to the shelter, perceptions be damned, and then again later that day after it had already pissed off and confused. fuck the timing, this attack against the message readers of clothing must commence ASAP

Hey guys, maybe Melania Trump, who chose to marry one of the most wicked and repulsive people on earth, is also a bad person and, to the extent she’s ever discussed at all, should no longer receive the already far too generous benefit of the doubt

seen it posited elsewhere that the Trump admin is deliberately trying to provoke reactions at this point, between this, Ivanka's pic with her kid right as the baby jail story broke, and Miller & Nielsen going to eat at Mexican restaurants where they know they'll get shouted at. perhaps they saw the Sam Bee & Al Pacino stuff as wins for them and want to portray their opposition as vulgar, shouting animals, especially knowing that publications like the NYT will use it to "both sides" away the atrocities of this administration. seems plausible but then again, assuming these guys have a coherent shared plan at all is probably a mistake
