.@pareene would like everyone to know that he he has "been locked out of twitter and that IF people want to register their anger about that they should text Jack” and also that he thinks my tweets are all good and extremely funny

that british tv comedy writer going nuts and thinking anyone talks about TERFs is an opportunity for him to chime in is wild

mh, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:28 (seven years ago)

Irish. It’s beyond me why he thinks that of all the people in the world who might comment on gender issues, his contributions are necessary.

However, massive props to him and his wife for their work lobbying to repeal the 8th Amendment banning virtually all abortions for Irish women.

suzy, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:32 (seven years ago)

too late, already FP'd mh for racism

kelp, clam and carrion (sic), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:33 (seven years ago)

whoops phrased badly, meant to say he's written british tv comedies

i'm sure there are irish tv comedies but i've not heard of them. shame, very whimsical people

mh, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:34 (seven years ago)

He does technically write British tv comedy

U. K. Le Garage (wins), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:34 (seven years ago)

Xp!

U. K. Le Garage (wins), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:35 (seven years ago)

He is absolutely despised by Irish feminists & repeal campaigners, not least because of his vile terf shit, and his tendency to only quote tweet men who oppose him while ignoring women criticising him.

His story, while sad and sadly common, made far less difference than the grassroots efforts of Irish campaigners and he doesn’t deserve any recognition given he’s demonstrated time and time again how he feels about the wrong sort of women.

gyac, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:35 (seven years ago)

xp yeah "writer of british tv comedies" would maybe be a better construction, my bad

wow that escalated quickly

mh, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:36 (seven years ago)

Linehan has always been an arsehole but the way he’s all day every day with the transphobic shit is intense yeah

U. K. Le Garage (wins), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:36 (seven years ago)

fwiw there were several threads that came to mind but this "HI THERE DID YOU SAY TERF" one killed me yesterday. it's about halfway down the thread

i always thought "feminazis" was something invented by weirdo reactionaries until i made the mistake of wandering into TERF twitter

— Rich Lather (@muhmentions) July 9, 2018

mh, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:38 (seven years ago)

holy shit linehan can eat shit forever

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:39 (seven years ago)

as like... a huge fan of black books this bums me out considerably

princess of hell (BradNelson), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:39 (seven years ago)

Drives me nuts too, like many media guys I knew in the ‘90s who were ~basically OK~ back then, has somehow become some shade of centrist dad.

The repeal thing: his wife should be recognised for her work helping to repeal the 8th, at least she’s not everywhere with that TERF nonsense.

suzy, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:41 (seven years ago)

No more than anyone else who spoke out; in fact I’d suggest that any random ordinary woman deserves more recognition for doing so given the longstanding stigma and death threats sent to many of them.

I could really link to any one thread but here’s a particularly awful one.

@Glinner why do you continue to support British feminists who do nothing to support Irish ones other then attack #repealthe8th groups for being trans inclusive?

I thought you were better then this.

— James Brophy (@jamesfbrophy) May 30, 2018

gyac, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:48 (seven years ago)

Feel like “centrist dad” doesn’t quite cut it at this point, or is at least less important than the “active bigot” part of his bio

U. K. Le Garage (wins), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:49 (seven years ago)

I've definitely gotten a little too invested in issues, for a moment, that didn't carry a lot of personal weight. But why the hell some middle-aged completely cis/hetero dude is insanely into this one particular issue is so weird.

also the issues I've briefly engaged with never involved being insanely transphobic

mh, Tuesday, 10 July 2018 18:53 (seven years ago)

Linehan has been conducting ludicrous feuds and outrage attacks on twitter 23/7 for a decade, he's just finally found something that people aren't shrugging and walking away from

kelp, clam and carrion (sic), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 19:36 (seven years ago)

are you not a trans exclusionary radical feminist
a slur!

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 27 July 2018 18:58 (seven years ago)

Dumb question but is there any reason there's been a huge upswing in errant spaces in tweets this year, or is it just some byproduct of more people composing tweets on their phones nowadays?

ヽ(´ー`)┌ (CompuPost), Friday, 27 July 2018 19:57 (seven years ago)

i found out yesterday that i was blocked by a person in my field who i don't know personally and have never interacted with in person or online but who participates in the same twitter circles i do, shares interests/followers, know a lot of the same people, etc. idk why i am dwelling on this but i really want to know why. i also want to figure out who else has blocked but it looks like there is not a way to easily do that.

marcos, Thursday, 2 August 2018 17:26 (seven years ago)

there are mechanisms that autoblock accounts if those accounts follow certain other accounts. like you can autoblock anyone that follows Trump or something. so it might not be personal.

flappy bird, Thursday, 2 August 2018 17:30 (seven years ago)

Wish I could quit twitter. Aren't we due for another SNS to pop-up that's hopefully less crass?

We want to provide an update on the conversation over the last 24 hours around why and how we enforce our policies. As we indicated yesterday, tweets from Alex Jones and InfoWars are not currently in violation of our Rules.

“Rules” *j/o motion*

faculty w1fe (silby), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 17:29 (seven years ago)

uh so you want him kicked off just arbitrarily

rip van wanko, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 17:31 (seven years ago)

Yeah I mean it's not a court of fuckin' law their rules are a smokescreen they already kick off whoever they want arbitrarily

faculty w1fe (silby), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 17:33 (seven years ago)

yup

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 17:34 (seven years ago)

I don't care about Alex Jones getting banned or not or whatever it's just risible that they appeal to their Rules in situations like this when the actual problem is @jack is a goddamn Nazi sympathizer

faculty w1fe (silby), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 17:34 (seven years ago)

it comes down to the fact they've made it clear they consider their service an online community with a completely flat structure. lists aren't especially useful, the verification of users is pretty arbitrary. they think this stuff is fine in their community

mh, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 17:44 (seven years ago)

little known fact jack's name is actually a nickname, his full name is does jack shit

stet, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 20:48 (seven years ago)

more gay furries on Mastodon than there were on Twitter '07

faculty w1fe (silby), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 21:20 (seven years ago)

is there a main mastodon instance?

mh, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 21:25 (seven years ago)

Yeah but don’t join it

faculty w1fe (silby), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 21:32 (seven years ago)

Mastodon.social is the mainest one I think. Maybe we should have an ILX one tho

stet, Wednesday, 8 August 2018 21:33 (seven years ago)

that'd be cute

faculty w1fe (silby), Wednesday, 8 August 2018 21:45 (seven years ago)

stet, Thursday, 9 August 2018 11:53 (seven years ago)

But Mr. Dorsey also said that while Twitter’s longtime guiding principle has been free expression, the company is now discussing “that safety should come first.” He added, “That’s a conversation we need to have.” He said he was thinking deeply about human rights law and listening to audiobooks on speech and expression.

you know it's serious when dorsey breaks out the audiobooks

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Saturday, 11 August 2018 01:04 (seven years ago)

If Jack Dorsey fell into an open manhole he’d probably spend months considering what to do about the situation.
