i hope people are paying attention on the day we finally receive stats on the number of children who were sent to foster care because relatives in the US couldn't be located.

I'm so confused pt 2: weren't they just saying everything was fine, media was making something out of nothing? why would they need to make an executive order or have Congress pass a law to fix something that isn't broken??
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 16:20 (eight years ago)
the important thing is that from the perspective of the border patrol, everything is fine and nothing has changed since 2014, these children are only detained for a couple hours, tops. they do hand them over to ICE and they have no idea what happens after that, but keep in mind that everything is fine and nothing has changed, from the border patrol's perspective.

President Trump on immigration:“The dilemma is that if you’re weak... the country is going to be overrun with millions of people, and if you’re strong, then you don’t have any heart. oof.
President Trump is preparing to issue an executive order as soon as Wednesday that ends the separation of families at the border by indefinitely detaining parents and children together, according to a person familiar with the White House plans.Mr. Trump’s executive order would seek to get around an existing 1997 consent decree, known as the Flores settlement, that prohibits the federal government from keeping children in immigration detention — even if they are with their parents — for more than 20 days.
Mr. Trump’s executive order would seek to get around an existing 1997 consent decree, known as the Flores settlement, that prohibits the federal government from keeping children in immigration detention — even if they are with their parents — for more than 20 days.
The President says he’s signing an executive order to end family separations. The actual aim seems to be to pick a fight with the courts and allow separations to continue while blaming judges. According to The New York Times, the President will sign an executive order allowing children to be detained indefinitely with their parents. The problem is that that violates a 1997 consent decree saying that you can’t detain/imprison children for more than 20 days (technically what’s currently happening isn’t detention). It straight up violates that order. So what will almost inevitably happen is that a court will step in, say you can’t do that and then Trump will announce that the judge is forcing him to keep separating families.

an important tidbit to keep in mind when you're arguing with my mom people who try to bypass the tricky "detaining toddlers" aspect of the story with "all i care about is enforcing the law and keeping this country safe" bullshit:
For all the talk from the WH about immigrant criminals, the practical effect of the new policy is to radically shift public resources from prosecuting people with criminal records to prosecuting desperate people with no record seeking refuge.— Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes) June 20, 2018
Before this policy roughly 90% of prosecutions in McAllen federal court were of detained immigrants with criminal records. Since the new policy it’s flipped! 90% of those being prosecuted have no record and are facing misdemeanor charges for first time entry.— Chris Hayes (@chrislhayes) June 20, 2018

The presence of an incumbent president will keep most potential Republican challengers deeply incognito until late 2019. Democrat hopefuls won't bust out the big announcement until at least May, but they will be making plenty of friendly phone calls to donors, governors, state party chairs, activists and operatives long before that. And dropping hints to the media.

As I predicted Monday, once @POTUS got focused on the child separation issue he put an end to it. President @realDonaldTrump is a compassionate person.
