I knew I'd seen Clarkston talked about somewhere before.

I think Paris is Burning is well known enough in mainstream culture that people recognise when he's lifting from it,

i don't think so. i honestly don't even think the stupider contestants on RPDR even know what paris is burning is so i doubt the wider public do. actually RPDR needs to just burn, at this point.

I can see where you think the renovations are a little too one dimensional. People tend to still really like motivational words in frames or on walls though (I blame Keep Calm and Carry On for all of that). Plus it's cheap. RPDR has gone downhill right? I stopped after Sasha Velour won but have been thinking about catching another season. I think people recognize that a movie called Paris is Burning exists (especially because of Madonna) but I don't think a lot of people have watched it in the most recent decade. I am honestly surprised how little so many contestants prepare for the show. Take a sewing class at Joanne's. c'mon.

Yerac, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 13:55 (five years ago) link

And seriously what was up with the persian dude. Was he a stoner or just a scammer?

Yerac, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 13:56 (five years ago) link

LOL, that reference you were mad about no one knowing about from a few weeks back. Literally no one knew about it. You're being ridiculous.

don't be rude, Eric. I wasn't talking about that. It needs to burn for a whole host of other reasons.

Yerac I think a lot of both

Really truly charmed by eps 1-3 of season 2 yesterday. Feeling Tan, especially after someone else twitted him for having no feelings. Right there with you, buddy. Us hearts of ice gotta stick together.

Also I don't watch RPDR but it has been a big support for an acquaintance of mine whose son is one of the currently feted "drag kids." So whatever that show can do for people, it should go right ahead and do it.

I love Tan. Especially after reading that he really, really didn't want to do the show and he seems so vital to it now.

I've had some issues with RPDR but it also probably comes from me watching all past seasons only this year (so all of the terminology for femininity, like serving fish, fishiness, tilapia, whatever is annoying). I am glad Tan acknowledged that under the umbrella of LGBTQ, there is a lot that each group does not know about each other. See also: how poorly Rupaul handled the questions about trans applicants to the show.

Yerac, Tuesday, 19 June 2018 15:23 (five years ago) link

Absolutely. We are family, but every family has relatives that simply don't get along.

Tan is great

Also, I started going grey as a teenager and now my hair is prolly 75% grey so I like how he rocks it youthfully. I prolly have another 10 years before I even think about letting it all grow out.

I liked the Burning Man dude a lot and after a lackluster beginning, that episode had good results, especially on the grooming front. The fashion styling was a bit poor I thought. But seriously what is the point of Antoni this season other than as eye candy? I mean a bowl of peanut something with coriander and onions jfc.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:14 (five years ago) link

Oh I hated Antoni's nut thing. Wet and spicy nuts, with falling herbs to eat with your hands??? Insanity.

Yerac, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:25 (five years ago) link

Can we all agree that the interiors guy is the only one doing anything like heavy lifting out of the five?

I Never Promised You A Hose Harden (Eric H.), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:31 (five years ago) link

yass.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:39 (five years ago) link

antoni should just use the time to teach these dorks how to cook eggs properly, or how to grill a steak properly, simple hearty food cooked well, but that would make for boring tv prob

i also liked burning man dude a lot and empathized with his midlife crisis but lol reno, close call there

sciatica, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 02:41 (five years ago) link

actually n/m the consistently funniest part of this show is watching these ppl walk into their new remodeled awesome kitchen and then antoni teaches them how to put peanuts in a bowl or something similarly lame

stolen fom twitter: (theres a million versions of this joke now but this one made me lol)

Bobby : ok so I spent 250,000$ renovating your house

Karamo : let’s talk feelings and see the real you. The true you

Tan : I just spent 17,000$ on new clothes for you !

Jonathan: here’s a beautiful haircut!

Antoni : HeRE HoW U MaKe GrILLeD CHeEZ 🤪

Yup. Antoni is there for masturbation. That's why he's there.

bandana necklace vs bandana belt

sciatica, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 06:52 (five years ago) link

Yeah, I find Antoni hot only sometimes. I couldn't figure out who he was reminding me of that made me think warm milk (was thinking Orlando Bloom or the guy from 50 Shades), but it's ^^^John Mayer.

Yerac, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 13:10 (five years ago) link

I think Antoni is hot in still photography and in slow motion sometimes. In regular motion, total john mayer vibe.

Yerac, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 14:48 (five years ago) link

he looked really pretty with eyeliner

the episode with the burner guy seemed odd to me -- i didn't like the matchmaker angle. otherwise he seemed like an alright dude, esp compared with the guy who lied to his mom and spat pumpkin seeds all day. yikes.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 14:51 (five years ago) link

On a few occasions I've thought the show opened up some topics that maybe could have been unpacked more but were interesting anyway. Like in the Mama Tammye ep, where Bobby won't go in the church and Karamo keeps insisting that the church is a supportive, nurturing place for him...yes, because one of you is a person of color who has experienced church communities serving & prioritizing different needs and identities. So in Karamo's experience, the Black church holds space and represents safety and community for its members even when their other identities complicate the relationship, and in Bobby's, the church is the abuser who traumatizes.

The ex-evangelical fb group I lurk on was not having the "all is forgiven" angle on this ep--they've collectively experienced too much trauma. Many of them have been ostracized, shunned, etc, and mistrust the feel-good line about being "loved" but not "affirmed." ("Affirmed" meaning, having LGBTQ life spiritually & theologically supported and not just tolerated among the congregants.) The ex-vies didn't want Tammye's son to go back at all.

Another good point was how at-risk a lot of the cast feel when they leave the metropolitan area and go out into more "red state" rural areas, and they all observed that Antoni can be more comfortable there because he's more straight-passing as opposed to "Big Gay Jesus" (lol Jonathan). The show kept it moving and didn't talk about this more but I liked that it was acknowledged.

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 15:16 (five years ago) link

yah Laurel I agree it's interesting however it can seem pretty facile when it's in the service of achieving these neat feel good resolutions. Like yay you're accepted now, all is well, except I couldn't help scanning the congregation's faces for signs of reluctance or disapproval. Don't think I spotted many sideeyes or frowns or raised eyebrows, but some of them didn't seem too happy about it and I always wonder what happens once the cameras stop rolling and they resume their normal lives.

Why do they insist on having these neat resolutions anyway? I know it makes for more acceptable viewing but it contradicts some of what they say about how long it has taken them to find acceptance or confidence to be themselves or true catharsis. I would have thought they might have been more supportive of people finding their tribe or w/e, so they can give the finger to people that wouldn't have them before and probably aren't going to change their views once they're out of the spotlight. I kind of like how some of the participants (probably unintentionally) subvert the show by not following aspects of their advice, so you get these awkward, very real moments. I'd like to see an episode where you get enough of those moments that it leads to disaster or someone just gets rejected, but I can't see that happening because it would require the Fab Five to be cool with their advice being more or less rejected too.

This just means we need more episodes, NOW.

Yerac, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:03 (five years ago) link

hey guys, does anyone fancy some peanuts in vinegar with onion and herbs to be eaten with the bare hand?

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:31 (five years ago) link

i agree qiqi, i'd like to see that too.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:41 (five years ago) link

i wasn't being sarcastic there, btw.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:42 (five years ago) link

Those peanuts may be more ridiculous than the gamer guy's lies. I was looking at the Fab 5's faces when he served them back at the loft.

Yerac, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:43 (five years ago) link

in the burner episode Karemo says (re. burning man) - "i'd judt like to take him to coachella so we can eat grapes and drink champagne in the vip lounge" (paraphrasing) - i'm not entirely sure what burning man is, and google has not helped me very much, but i just thought that was the worst advice possible.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:46 (five years ago) link

i haven't seen the gamer episode yet! xpost.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:47 (five years ago) link

i want to see these peanuts

I have never been to burning man, but I imagine it's like the movie Wicker Man except naked dirty people on drugs.

Yerac, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:49 (five years ago) link

I don't know if he's a real gamer, I just got tired of calling him the persian guy.

Yerac, Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:50 (five years ago) link

that sounds excellent though. xp

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:51 (five years ago) link

it certainly sounds a lot better than being in the vip lounge at coachella.

Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 20 June 2018 22:51 (five years ago) link

That's why that dude was so into it. I was like "i'm sure Burning Man is the highlight of your year, you crunchie ass mofo."

"way harsh, Tai"

Burner dude ep was maybe more low-key subtle in terms of resolutions but I thought it was kind of nice & i liked that him & the lady got together

Gamer guy ep: while I wanted to kick him more often than look at him, there’s something about the way they use a very mild “tough love” to shake them but dont spend too much time letting them wallow in their depressive situations. I do like that they point out the high level of expectation that comes with their specific heritage/family situations, to understand how you get from there to here. (Thinking about the Kim Thayil looking dude from s1, same kinda deal.)

Like, the Fabs cant turn these dudes into unkickable winners in a week, but the fact that they try & they dont mollycoddle them a lot is good. imo. Marginal gains.
