This theory about building new housing ties in nicely with the absurd closure of The Arches
― boxedjoy, Saturday, 16 June 2018 22:42 (eight years ago)
refurb??
I think my friend is talking about the work done on the building after the 2014 fire. And yes, the papers today are talking about £100m to rebuild this time round - so it's a goner :-(
― Ward Fowler, Monday, 18 June 2018 08:05 (seven years ago)
what happens to all the students who were at various points of their particular courses at GSoA? That would seem like an additionally expensive clusterfuck to sort out.
― calzino, Monday, 18 June 2018 08:19 (seven years ago)
I imagine lots of their work has been reduced to ash and while that may stretch some ppl's sense of "oh the humanity" :p, but still it's an absolute fucker.
― calzino, Monday, 18 June 2018 08:24 (seven years ago)
not to mention all the staff whose working lives are in chaos right now
― boxedjoy, Monday, 18 June 2018 08:29 (seven years ago)
Were any staff/students actually working out of the Mackintosh building? I thought they'd all been relocated while the refurbishment took place.
― Ward Fowler, Monday, 18 June 2018 08:41 (seven years ago)
ah right, I thought they might have still been using part of the building. I was talking to an Auntie about this last night, and she had a booze/phet assisted nervous breakdown during her fine art degree. And she was saying if her work had been destroyed it would have tipped her over the edge.
― calzino, Monday, 18 June 2018 09:23 (seven years ago)
Makes me sick to the pit of my stomach just thinking about it.
Also, RIP giant glitterball in the ABC. Fair fucks to the Garage for managing to put Saturday night's Belly gig on at very short notice. The ABC, while not as much of a touchstone as the Mackintosh building, is one of the best gig venues in Glasgow, and I have fond memories of it as a cinema where I went on some terrible dates when I first moved down here. There's a great piece on Facebook by the Lost Glasgow guy about its history as a circus and general house of awesome entertainment back in the day.

i hope the whole of glasgow doesn't go on fire tomorrow. 32 degrees!
― Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 23:28 (seven years ago)
I'm going up there at the weekend, at least my mum can't moan about the terrible weather for a change - or can she?
― Alan Alba (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 June 2018 23:39 (seven years ago)
i literally cannae remember it being in the 30s in glasgow ever - though i understand we had similar weather in 1995 - this seems to have slipped my mind - and 1975. the latter summer was the first summer my dad arrived in glasgow from chile. he thought "this weather is no bad, quite like home" and then has complained about shitey summers for 40 plus years hence

mine too.

Yes, she can (and will if she's anything like mine)
― Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Thursday, 28 June 2018 00:54 (seven years ago)
actually, that summer in the 90s is coming back to me now. everyone was telling me how tanned i was. i don't get that tanned any more, why is that?
― Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Thursday, 28 June 2018 01:13 (seven years ago)
actually, i remember my mum telling me (apologies in advance) that i was "like a wee d****e"
they were different times.

the current regime of buskers needs to change. Its ruining the Buchanan area.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 29 June 2018 18:04 (seven years ago)
buchanan street is murder for buskers but it's always been and it can be mainly avoided.

Amazing.

Just boarded a bus at Buchanan bus station and overheard a 20 year old and a 40 year old connecting over Belle and Sebastian in a lovely honest chat.
Glasgow is funny in that despite never living here I still miss it - the two gigs a month make me feel like I know it better than some places I’ve lived for years.

Is that a Harry Potter shop on big bus street?
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 31 August 2018 15:39 (seven years ago)
I don’t know. Union street?
― Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Friday, 31 August 2018 15:56 (seven years ago)
Yes, I barely know the names of any streets.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 31 August 2018 16:06 (seven years ago)
Should be renamed to big bus street.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 31 August 2018 16:10 (seven years ago)
it's such a tip.

How long are you going to be around for Jim?
― brain (krakow), Friday, 31 August 2018 17:19 (seven years ago)
not long, ten days, usual paucity of annual leave problem

Let's fail to organise a FAP! It's what we do best.
― ailsa, Saturday, 1 September 2018 00:22 (seven years ago)
well, I haven't seen you and Gerry for a while...
― Britain's Sexiest Cow (jed_), Saturday, 1 September 2018 02:05 (seven years ago)
I don't think I've seen Gerry since I last saw you both at the Art School!
― ailsa, Saturday, 1 September 2018 13:31 (seven years ago)
Let's try to meet up for a pint.
The Harry Potter shop on Big Bus Street replaced the "Stuff" shop.
It's called something like "The Boy Wizard Store" so it mat be selling unofficial Potter tat.
― Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Sunday, 2 September 2018 00:01 (seven years ago)
*may*
A failed organisation of drinks was where my mind was going too. Would you be up for it Jim and have time, if it happened while you're around?
― brain (krakow), Sunday, 2 September 2018 10:17 (seven years ago)
so it may be selling unofficial Potter tat.
― Non, je ned raggette rien (onimo), Sunday, September 2, 2018 1:01 AM
Surely that's a lawsuit waiting to happen?
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 2 September 2018 10:29 (seven years ago)
It is an unofficial Potter emporium selling officially licensed Potter product (and a smattering of non-Potter tat).
― Ward Fowler, Sunday, 2 September 2018 15:45 (seven years ago)
just what our fair city neededlike there’s not enough twats playing quidditch in the grounds of glasgow uni already
― my dream is to never be a champion (bizarro gazzara), Sunday, 2 September 2018 17:56 (seven years ago)
Cant believe one book/film series can support a whole shop. We'll see how long it lasts.
― Robert Adam Gilmour, Sunday, 2 September 2018 19:12 (seven years ago)
It's supporting (at least) two in Edinburgh!
― Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 2 September 2018 19:14 (seven years ago)
my house is currently up for sale, and i had a classic 'glasgow is a v small place' interaction last night when duglas and chloe from bmx bandits turned up to view it

I think I found it, looks like a really cool house. Do you know when it dates from?
― brain (krakow), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 09:38 (seven years ago)
telecaster in the front room, hardwood floor? if so that's ours, yeah. dates from about 1890 or so - i think it was an old shipbuilder's house
gonna miss it tbh, it's been a great home but we just need more space now we have a baby
― Burt Bacharachman-Turner Overdrive Like Jehuman League (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 9 October 2018 09:42 (seven years ago)
Yep, that's the one I was thinking. Looks lovely, really interesting. I guess it'll be a popular sell as it's quite unusual? How's the search for a new place going?
