how do you really stop a tyrant i wish we knowed

Hunt3r, Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:15 (eight years ago)

the pittsburgh post-gazette has fired its political cartoonist of 25 years, pretty obviously because of his anti-trump cartoons

mookieproof, Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:17 (eight years ago)

We've undoubtedly reached the point where we can confidently refer to this as "situation normal", so all good, right?

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:17 (eight years ago)

Comey personal gmail news is some beyond ironic bullshit

Aaron Mate at the Nation argues it still ain't collusion yet.

Anyway, here's the report

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:21 (eight years ago)

Hmmm

Source briefed on the IG report says issue of alleged leaks to Rudy about Clinton investigation info isn't limited to what's in this report. More info to come on that later.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:21 (eight years ago)

My automatic response to what I'm sure will be thousands of smug invocations of 'we'll stop him' would be something like 'well, did they?'

Gladys McFlatus (Old Lunch), Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:22 (eight years ago)

Did they? Have they? Have they even slowed him? Has anyone hindered him more than he's hindered himself?

Gladys McFlatus (Old Lunch), Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:23 (eight years ago)

Aaron Mate piece is predictably awful, he’s been aggressively downplaying and moving goalposts throughout this whole thing though for whatever reason.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:28 (eight years ago)

lol WaPo has changed their headline from the "we'll stop him" quote to "Watchdog report blasts Comey, documents major missteps in FBI probe of Clinton’s email"

Οὖτις, Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:40 (eight years ago)

Lol of course. Bad faith interpretations in defense of the fascist president but from the left.

Peter Strzok helped launch/oversee the FBI's initial Trump-Russia investigation in summer 2016 and later joined Mueller's team as its top agent before being removed in July 2017. This is not a good look: https://t.co/ChOuOJi6kA

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:40 (eight years ago)

Inspector general Michael Horowitz accused Comey of insubordination, saying he flouted Justice Department practices when he decided only he had the authority and credibility to make key decisions and speak for the Justice Department.

Comey made a “serious error of judgment” in sending a letter to Congress on Oct. 28 announcing he was reopening the investigation of Clinton’s use of the server while secretary of state, the report found, and called it “extraordinary that Comey assessed that it was best” for him not to speak directly with either the Attorney General or the Deputy Attorney General about his decision beforehand.

wasn't this the cover story Rosenstein & Trump initially put forward for firing Comey

Οὖτις, Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:44 (eight years ago)

libs like Nerdstrom ready to interpret any critique of any "anti-Trump" force as a defense of Yam

wd probably be up for a coup though

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:45 (eight years ago)

this hope that Mueller, the FBI etc would ever serve as any kind of significant check on Trump was always unrealistic, as I've said repeatedly. The only solution to stopping Trump is a political one - ie, control of Congress + winning elections

Οὖτις, Thursday, 14 June 2018 18:46 (eight years ago)

in the meantime, this fight between law enforcement and Trump is producing the ideal outcome at the moment - keeping the president distracted, embattled, and under a cloud.

OK,
just hoping that there are not going to be other incumbencies competing with this one for rewriting the norms to the absolute worst.
Maybe a little idealistic.

Like, what exactly is your analysis of authoritarianism if it includes *giving* the president *more* powers of domestic surveillance and *stopping* the president from withdrawing troops from foreign countries? https://t.co/YdmbWkTLFe

— corey robin (@CoreyRobin) June 14, 2018

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 19:36 (eight years ago)

Stopping the president from doing something is more authoritarian?

the more troops everywhere, the more free everyone is

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 19:53 (eight years ago)

or

In the 1970s, when liberals and Democrats were serious about their fears of an authoritarian presidency, they moved to *limit* the president's ability to deploy troops abroad. Today, they do this. https://t.co/AlvGWPVz91

the ignatius rock of ignorance (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 14 June 2018 19:53 (eight years ago)

Chris Murphy has been pushing a fairly consistent anti-war agenda, he’s smart enough to know that the answer isn’t as simple US eliminates all military presence abroad.

Nerdstrom Poindexter, Thursday, 14 June 2018 20:02 (eight years ago)

v important that you guys figure out the correct stance on this bill that has no chance of passage

Οὖτις, Thursday, 14 June 2018 20:08 (eight years ago)

yeah when I saw Murphy's name attached I had my doubts about the headline, and the headlines have been wrong -- check out the IG report -- all day.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 14 June 2018 22:12 (eight years ago)

BREAKING: Republicans are floating a draft bill that would end family separations as the U.S. plans to reopen a tent shelter to house migrant children.

A draft text of the Republicans’ bill also calls for visas for young undocumented immigrants known as “dreamers” as well as billions in funding for President Trump’s border wall. Conservatives and moderates are reserving judgment on the legislation ahead of expected votes next week.

The compromise bill would end the practice of dividing immigrant children from their parents at the border, a policy criticized earlier Thursday by Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.). The U.S. will soon begin housing migrant children at a shelter site near El Paso that was last used in 2016 to house migrant children and families in large canvas tents. The site will have recreation areas and educational programming, and the tents are air-conditioned, officials said.
