this hope that Mueller, the FBI etc would ever serve as any kind of significant check on Trump was always unrealistic, as I've said repeatedly. The only solution to stopping Trump is a political one - ie, control of Congress + winning elections

in the meantime, this fight between law enforcement and Trump is producing the ideal outcome at the moment - keeping the president distracted, embattled, and under a cloud.
