Another thing about the series finale: I forgot how optimistic it is! "Congratulations!!!" iirc, that's what Shinji sees right before he wakes up on the beach at the end of EoE?

that's the idea, yes

idk some people think of them as separate endings but they're conjoined in my head at least

ideally shinji realizes he's able to love himself at the same time he's having a chill convo with his mom about the future of the human race

i love it because it's so optimistic, but you still get flashes of what's going on in the real world is dire as fuck and fully fleshed out in the movie

yeah the movie is unrelentingly brutal & bleak. Shinji rejecting "CONGRATULATIONS!" and Instrumentality makes him waking up on the beach with his yang Asuka even more devastating

also lol I forgot how funny Asuka and Misato are

idk if eoe implies that shinji's rejected "congratulations" or that his psychological progress gets eroded as soon as instrumentality is over/giant rei's head falls off, but clearly he's in a v bad mood when he gets back on the beach (probably all that horrible absence created by his separation from a vast orb of consciousness)

well i finally got around to seeing shin godzilla, which is incredible and completely essential viewing for anyone who likes eva imo

i don't know if i'd go that far. it's a fun watch, but largely a satire of japanese government / the original Godzilla film

idk it totally has the feeling of an early evangelion episode

and the shot of godzilla's tail at the end is the francis bacon hellscapes of end of evangelion briefly swarming into the movie

and it may be a satire but it's also an extremely earnest one, the way it manages that tone is remarkable

also "angel attack" plays throughout for some reason

The Rebuilds are fun so far but 2 movies in it's like all action and no psychological turmoil

as much as the dvd transfers for death/rebirth and eoe were dogshit and as much as the dub included some dodgy sound effects choices on her part, the people who translated the films did it perfectly

I really like the original dub cast, this is a bummer.

huh maybe next year i'll start that evangelion podcast i've been wanting to do for years
