I hate to sound like the old curmudgeon here, but every movie I've seen in the last six months has been borderline ruined by high school kids talking and texting through the entire thing. And you can't politely request that they refrain from either activity, because god forbid anyone try to take away their god-given right to text at all times.

is texting really noisy or something?

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

Oh noes texting.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

Its annoying when the person sitting in front of you keeps holding up a brightly lit cell phone throughout the film, more than a little distracting.

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:11 (seventeen years ago)

Also, most ppl don't put their phones on silent for god knows what reason, so hearing the chirping responses is also annoying. (The overreaction when you ask for them to stop is also distracting.)

reason #192039 I am hopefully never buying a cell phone.

At my local multiplex (Romford, in lovely, lovely Essex), the sound system is akin to an artillery bombardment on the opening day of the Somme. Kids could be eviscerating each other with bazookas a row over and you wouldn't even notice.

guys, they have 11am showings for olds like you

rip dom passantino 3/5/09 never forget (max), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for that solution, I had absolutely no idea! I'll happily schedule my work hours around seeing movies. No reason I should expect inconsiderate asshats to stop being inconsiderate asshats, right?

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

Besides, the 11 AM showings are full of blue-hairs getting confused about the plot and loudly asking each other to explain whats going on.

is that how your ears got wounded, or is it possible that it just sounds so loud because your ears are actually wounds

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

well im not going to schedule my texting hours around your movie hours, so i guess were at an impasse

Congrats on being a complete asshole. I hope someone shoves your phone down your fucking throat.

But Star Trek, I liked it.

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:22 (seventeen years ago)

I am sort of sad that no one went for my lame trollbait but mostly relieved.

Unclench, y'all, unclench (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

I lolled.

The worst movie experience I ever had was in a packed theatre and I was stuck with this old lady behind me saying "I hate this movie! It's not like Friends!" and HISSING at the screen.

Hatfail of Hollow (Nicole), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

...and what was the movie?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:30 (seventeen years ago)

Saw III, I hope!

Unclench, y'all, unclench (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

It was High Fidelity, so while she had a point I would have at least liked to have been able to hear the dialogue so I could find out for myself about the suckage. xp

Hatfail of Hollow (Nicole), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:32 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, now that I've exceeded by weekly allowance for rising to trollbait, back to this movie. I'm seeing Khan kicked around quite a bit for the sequel and I'm praying that isn't the case. Personally I'd love to see a good Q story finally make it to the big screen.

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

argh i hate q.

I'm seeing Khan kicked around quite a bit for the sequel

that is a terrible terrible idea

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

Really? I find Q very hit or miss, but his best stories are grebt.

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

I saw this. I liked it. Was kinda annoyed by the blue streak of light effect they used a million times.

Oh yeah, I especially liked how Spocks narration of his failure to save Romulus sounded like one of his spoken word songs, very much reminded me of "A Visit To A Sad Planet".

Orin Boyd (jel --), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

Really? I find Q very hit or miss, but his best stories are grebt.

yes

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

They are bound to introduce the Borg early for sequel.

Orin Boyd (jel --), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:40 (seventeen years ago)

q is interesting in theory and there are maybe one or two decent stories w/him but ultimately because he is omnipotent he is only good for one of two things: borrrring talkfests about the nature of humanity or whimsical exercises in overacting where this omnipotent being has nothing better to do than fuck w/picard.

Is because I think a lot of the music you like is flowery? (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

oh please no borg either i think we've pretty much played those guys out.

Is because I think a lot of the music you like is flowery? (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking that the only downside of a Q story would be too much talking or stupid time-period setpieces.

From MTV.com:
Word already leaked more than a month ago that at least one "Trek" sequel is in the works, and the series' gatekeepers confirmed to us that such memorable characters as Khan Noonien Singh and Dr. Tolian Soran are among the many characters whose life courses may have been altered by the events of the new film.

"All the characters who existed in the universe or canon we grew up with are essentially still around in some capacity," Kurtzman explained. "But their lives have been altered, so they may again intersect with our crew."

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:44 (seventeen years ago)

i would think that khan & the gang, out there floating in space in suspended animation, would be uniquely UN-altered by the shenanigans

s1ocki, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

It would be terrible but I would kind of love it if they got the Kardassian family on to play Cardassians.

Unclench, y'all, unclench (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

lol that's a really weird thought.

Is because I think a lot of the music you like is flowery? (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:46 (seventeen years ago)

i mean, i know this is asking for a lot, but how about trying to write a new adversary? that does not suck like "lord nero" did?

Is because I think a lot of the music you like is flowery? (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

The sequel will obviously involve a quest to find Archer's dog (Scottie lost him in a teleporter accident)...Dog will now have become an omnipotent super-powerful being, and only being reunited with Archer will stop his reality altering rampage. Spock will find it all highly-illogical.

Orin Boyd (jel --), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

Jel is the new Roddenberry.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

xp i like it, you should write a treatment.

Is because I think a lot of the music you like is flowery? (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

two words: SABRETOOTHED TRIBBLES

Unclench, y'all, unclench (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

Other than no Khan and no Borg, I'm up for about anything.

Another topic, easter eggs. A friend was listing a few off yesterday, but I'm sure I didn't catch any of the ones he mentioned. Apparently, among many others, there is R2D2, a Star Destroyer, and the Cloverfield monster hidden somewhere in the movie.

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

the cloverfield monster is the big scary dino that chases kirk. not the exact same but the weird four-part mouth.

Is because I think a lot of the music you like is flowery? (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, so obvious I didn't even make that connection.

homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:51 (seventeen years ago)

later on, the monster enrolls in Starfleet and becomes Nurse Chapel

Unclench, y'all, unclench (HI DERE), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i didn't either but cloverfield left a pretty fleeting impression on me.

Is because I think a lot of the music you like is flowery? (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:52 (seventeen years ago)

it is kinda odd that they left Nurse Chapel out of this

Wrinkles, I'll See You On the Other Side (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

I am disappointed in the lack of a Gorn in this flick.

Mugatu would also have been acceptable

(j/k - ice planet monsters were obvious nods, worked for me)

He actually looks like a TOS villain:
