Maybe this is more for the unpopular opinions thread but there has got to be a better way to have a conversation about depression, anxiety, stress &c than through twee childish drawings

U. K. Le Garage (wins), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 10:06 (seven years ago)

I have a lot of thoughts about that and related issues that don't belong on the depression thread

tbf the meme language of cancer is fucking terrible too

the Messi inside (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 10:16 (seven years ago)

erg, yes: the brave fighting fighter who fights has fought and defeated cancer.

So people who just up'n'die from cancer must not have fought hard enough. Because they were not brave. Brave like Fighter McFighterson over here, who was brave and fought.

This one has been popping up for years and makes me want to kick the poster in the face every time I see it

Also: cancer research is by far the most well-funded and socially/governmentally approved cause there is. Including and especially breast cancer. Cancer-related advocacy is all well and good, but advocates should not pretend it's a neglected stepchild.

Indeed, lots of other non-beribboned diseases could benefit from some of that $5B in NIH largesse, saving a lot more lives and improving quality of life for millions. But that's impolite to point out, because grandma. Or something.

emotional support fungus (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 11:20 (seven years ago)

a friend of mine criticized a bodyshaming Cancer Research campaign a few months back and got a week of really nasty misogynist abuse from the caring souls who care about cancer

the Messi inside (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 11:48 (seven years ago)

hang on.. wait.. WHAT?

XPs
atom talk is almost the smallest talk there is

kinder, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 16:25 (seven years ago)

someday i hope to split the atom, then talk at that level

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 16:25 (seven years ago)

I hate small talk
I wanna talk about atoms

that would be a great funny beginning to a song, but then it just keeps going.

omar little, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 16:28 (seven years ago)

that's generally how most artist things on facebook start, i think

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 16:29 (seven years ago)

the whole obama is a secret marxist muslim thing from a few years back? at some point that was paired with a G Em7 Cadd9 D progression, it was just lovely

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 16:31 (seven years ago)

How do these people start conversations? You don't just launch right into the meaning of life during an elevator ride (unless something goes horribly wrong with the elevator itself).

Evan, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 17:20 (seven years ago)

i read those things as excuses for social ineptitude rather than descriptions of how they actually behave

VAR VAR Rasputin (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 17:41 (seven years ago)

Performative wackiness is super conventional. Whenever someone uses a bumpersticker or refrigerator magnet or social media meme to say "look at me, I'm so DIFFERENT and WEIRD," I suspect they are way more boring than people who think they're boring.

it's Heisenberg

omar little, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 17:51 (seven years ago)

being boring is good

flamenco blorf (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 17:51 (seven years ago)

xp i assumed that and that didn't diminish the loathing

VAR VAR Rasputin (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 17:52 (seven years ago)

xkcd has a one good comic every decade average and the rest of them make me want to stop living

mh, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 17:53 (seven years ago)

> being boring is good

It is one of my favorite Pet Shop Boys songs

too gashly (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 17:53 (seven years ago)

xkcd is waste Ivor cutler is good

U. K. Le Garage (wins), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:01 (seven years ago)

The Heisenberg thing possibly makes it worse!

omar little, Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:04 (seven years ago)

Erm, not to be That Guy, but the black-hatted character in xkcd predates "Breaking Bad" by several years

too gashly (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 13 June 2018 18:11 (seven years ago)

thanks Randall

Why do all those still-images-as-videos posts have a line through them now

frogbs, Thursday, 14 June 2018 04:09 (seven years ago)

Can't tell if it's supposed to be dumb, though.

nickn, Thursday, 14 June 2018 23:13 (seven years ago)

too lovingly rendered to be intentionally dumb

A is for (Aimless), Thursday, 14 June 2018 23:21 (seven years ago)

irl i think bowie made very awkward conversation with warhol about shoes (or something), played him a bit of the song that he named after him (which warhol had little reaction to), and left

obviously DLC (Karl Malone), Thursday, 14 June 2018 23:24 (seven years ago)

This is such fucking lame sauce that it's hardly worth putting here, except for the fact that it was shared by a facebook friend who apparently thiks that this is a good way to live your life.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 18 June 2018 06:28 (seven years ago)

hmm I kinda agree with that though

not the phrasing, not the weird image, not the unrelated imperative at the end, but the general idea that (over)thinking is overrated and doing stuff that keeps your mind off things is often beneficial - this seems to align with a lot of selfhelp lit/buddhism etc

but I guess if you read the caption politically or in an anti-intellectual context, it seems... less clever

niels, Monday, 18 June 2018 06:37 (seven years ago)

I'm afraid that the unsharable context of the post makes your reading a bit too generous.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 18 June 2018 08:01 (seven years ago)

roger that

niels, Monday, 18 June 2018 09:44 (seven years ago)

Facebook groups devoted to self-conscious ironic shitposting are weird! To be scrolling past my aunt fund-raising for rural firemen or whatever and on the right side of the screen is, like, "Edgy Memes For Sullen Teens". Why is this here, don't they know FB is a safe space for normies

Dan I., Saturday, 23 June 2018 03:58 (seven years ago)

That lighthouse thing about how you mustn't overthink things is making me fucking furious.
