Been queuing since 05:35 and I haven't reached the "End Of The Line" sign yet

It's funny how when there's a queue, they can tell nobody has a bomb in their shoes or their phone or their laptop, without looking

ohare, for its many faults, had a new scanner that could apparently do that

And yet the queue to get scanned was just as long as ever the other day.

We were confidently assured by one of the staff assigned to watch (and fail to control) the queue that the line would most be more quickly once “the canine” arrived. Cue dog, no perceptible quickening but at least we had a doggo to look at.

(We arrived a bit early to be greeted with the news that our flight was 90 minutes delayed so we weren’t too bothered about slow lines, as it goes. 5 hours in O’Hare is a hard time.)

but i think that new rules means that they have to rotate staff between different roles every fifteen minutes for some obscure security protocol and i think

At Luton Airport waiting for my bus to Oxford and discovering that the Wifi which works like a dream in Departures is totally non-functional in Arrivals! Oh and the airport outside of the security gates seems to have become completely dry --- not even any gins in tins in the WH Smith fridge anymore...

In Manchester airport nice and early, find my flight to Istanbul has already been delayed meaning the connection time in Ataturk is down to 1 hour which is just not what I want. Have a feeling I might make it to Addis but my luggage won’t. Too early for a beer as well.

On the plus side I’m rediscovering the ‘73 Grateful Dead shows.

funnily enough I also once had a delayed arrival at ataturk on a journey between manchester and addis and my bags were late (though I was going the other way). very jealous though

Oh I had to technically be able to respond to some emails in my layover. Didn't happen anyway because I had to ride shotgun on an otherwise empty passenger bus, speeding round ataturk to make it to the flight desk, where I found they had already wrote off the chances of me getting there on time and sold the tickets on. They did get me on the flight but my luggage didn't have a chance.

Finished reading Zama on my flight and the writing style is just great. Need to see the film again to confirm but I think Martel was inspired in what she took from the novel and what she added in. I suppose the film already stands strong in its own right. If the blu ray has extended scenes, which I sort of doubt I would be very interested to watch them.

My copy of Cronenberg on Cronenberg got chored while I was at the toilet in a cafe, I found that kind of funny because it's so niche but whatever. Running a bit short on reading material now but have a couple history books to read.

Anyway my airbnb host is fab, and I've been happy to extend my time in Addis and my luggage has arrived. New Year's Eve party in Meskel square last night was amazing too. Tomorrow is north to the stone cut churches in Lalibela.

In the BA Concorde Lounge ahead of a First Class flight to HK feeling slightly better about all the long haul economy flights that earned the air miles I am cashing in.

was meant to be flying back from nine hours in Boise at 9pm

this got pushed to 9:55

then the incoming plane we were meant to be getting on suffered turbulence, and we were told that by 10:30pm we’d have more information

that plane has been too damaged to fly, and we might be getting on a flight that’s due to land at 10:28, but obv won’t have any updates until after it gets onto the ground.

Not sure if I’m on the second or third loop of the Christmas music playing. They do include Baby It’s Cold Outside though.
