i gave a ride to this woman a few weeks ago, can't remember her name but she was 70% blind from some accident and traveling the world, she gave me $20 which was nice because honestly i needed it.
― you bet, nancy (map), Tuesday, 29 May 2018 20:35 (six years ago) link
this was after a trail run and she was also running when she put her thumb out. i stopped because it's rare to see other runners in mountain bike trail areas.

The joy in running is in the suffering! It’s too easy to have fun riding a bike, I don’t need that temptation.
― Jeff, Tuesday, 29 May 2018 22:23 (six years ago) link
i like a nice easy ride for run recovery days, loosens the legs up

oh no!! and i’m not sure i see how that’s all that different from a supersized kids’ balance bike other than the fact the you now have a giant metal pole inches away from your face

Smashed my Half Marathon PB yesterday in the Severn Bridge HM.
Weather was atrocious, course was quite hilly but somehow managed to knock almost three minutes off my previous PB in a time of 1:27:48.
Got a fun, downhill 10K in a couple of weeks then the Cardiff Half a few weeks after that and the Mendip Muddle a week later which will be my first ever trail run (with zero trail training).
Anyone else got any events coming up?
― groovypanda, Monday, 27 August 2018 20:29 (five years ago) link
i'm doing a half marathon on september 9th in coney island. the "indian summer half marathon."
i ran 9 miles very slowly yesterday. that's the most i've ever run. i think i'll be able to finish this.
― Trϵϵship, Monday, 27 August 2018 20:40 (five years ago) link
If you can run 9 miles you should be able to do 13. Just take it at a comfortable pace (especially if it's hot), make sure to keep hydrated and enjoy the race.
― groovypanda, Monday, 27 August 2018 21:17 (five years ago) link
Yep, have fun! Until it stops being fun, then keep going!

good luck Treeship! I'm thinking about signing up for my next half in February, only doing about 10-12 miles a week right now... too hot to be running 5+ miles at a pop, but evenings should cool down below 90F in about six weeks and I can start getting some mileage.
― com rad erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 27 August 2018 21:41 (five years ago) link
Thanks! I found the secret to increasing my mileage was audiobooks. Before I would have nothing to focus my mind on and the time would just drag on
― Trϵϵship, Monday, 27 August 2018 21:45 (five years ago) link
I used to listen to music but after Trump I'm so burned out on sounds I need my runs to be dead silent
― com rad erry red flag (f. hazel), Monday, 27 August 2018 21:48 (five years ago) link
I used to do silent in college and loved the meditative aspect but recently have needed music to prevent anxious thoughts creeping in and ruining my momentum

finished my half marathon. extremely sloooooowwwww but i want to do the brooklyn half next year now and do it in under 2 hours.
― Trϵϵship, Sunday, 16 September 2018 18:53 (five years ago) link
since i didn't train properly i had all kinds of weird soreness for the week after but i did feel exhilarated after finishing. exhilirated and nauseous.
― Trϵϵship, Sunday, 16 September 2018 18:54 (five years ago) link
the spousal (now ex-)runner i know says halves are the correct endurance distance for testing endurance speed. much past that, other things are starting to interfere with the speed/conditioning measurement- body type burdens, food processing questions, soft tissue joint complications- sort of like those who say long course tri or longer starts being about how well your body can absorb food/nutrition during exertion which is- is that _really_ an athletic conditioning issue?
― Hunt3r, Sunday, 16 September 2018 20:05 (five years ago) link
congrats, btw!

Half marathon by far by least favorite distance. They’re just brutal to race.

just tried running a few km for the first time in a few years and apparently dropping 25lbs will do fuckin wonders for your pace

This year has been good despite (in NYC) a really cold winter and hot summer. Just hit 1,500 miles, so I'm on course for my goal of 2,000 for the year. Maybe 1/3 of my runs have been in other places since I travel quite a lot for work. A lot of 6am wakeups to run. Barely bother with afternoons or evenings anymore - but maybe should look back into it.
― paulhw, Friday, 21 September 2018 23:15 (five years ago) link
My running keeps getting slower and slower at the RPEs, same low running volume and general intensities - i think i’m now off about 20 secs/mile. Weight is the same. My cycling mileage has gone up, but my times there have gotten worse on climbing segments there, too.I dont expect aging effects are linear or smooth, and i’m wondering if its just an aging downstep? Literally in the past two weeks i had my first noticed incident of reading difficulty at my normal range- i had to push page back a bunch of inches. I’m 51 so ive been the envy of most of my friends for years really, but fuck. Reading glasses are gonna happen before long i assume.
― Hunt3r, Saturday, 22 September 2018 00:22 (five years ago) link
“same RPEs”
Change up your pace. Throw in some strides at the end of your run or surges during it. Run some fartleks.
― Jeff, Saturday, 22 September 2018 10:55 (five years ago) link
Yeah, you need to vary up your training. Some long slow runs, some hills, intervals etcI've been doing a half marathon up some steep hills once a week for the last couple of months and my 5K & 10K pace have improved considerably as a result.
― groovypanda, Saturday, 22 September 2018 19:30 (five years ago) link
Thx. I dont want to get faster (i dont love running) tho i know it is super likely if i would run a decent amount. without speed work, periodization, weight loss or anything. I run 2x3mi/wk. enough to keep my joints moving. Its just my regular tempo pace on minimal runs has always been very predictable using either hr or rpe. And it is sliding.
― Hunt3r, Saturday, 22 September 2018 21:49 (five years ago) link
What is rpe
― tobo73, Saturday, 22 September 2018 23:52 (five years ago) link
rate of perceived exertion, its 80’s pre-hrm style of measuring zones where easy is 4-5, tempo is basically 6 thresh is 8ish and anaerobic 9+ or 10. Dunno if it was a cycling only thing but i never treated it suchly.

First ever trail half marathon tomorrow.
Looking forward to it although could do without the potential gale force winds forecast
― groovypanda, Friday, 8 February 2019 11:12 (five years ago) link
yeah the forecast tomorrow looks a bit rough round here too - hope it's not too much of a mudfest for you all

hey groovypanda, how did it go?
― goats eat grandma (NickB), Tuesday, 12 February 2019 10:39 (five years ago) link
Bit windy and one brief shower of hail but other wise not too bad.
Did it in 1:44 although little bit annoyed as apart from two very short hill sections, the entire race was run on the hard roads that criss-cross the forest and so trail shoes were entirely the wrong choice of footwear.
Came 3rd in my age group but fairly sure I'd have won it if I'd had road shoes on.
Still an enjoyable race though with some great views.
― groovypanda, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 10:50 (five years ago) link
Ah that is annoying, but well done on your performance!

You got anything on the horizon?

planning on doing the thames ring 250 again in june - did it two years ago and really enjoyed it. have managed a good amount of running over the last couple of months and feel like i could be in reasonable shape for it. have also promised my son that i'll do a 24hr mountain bike race around the same time though, so the main problem will be juggling the two lots of training without overdoing things.
― goats eat grandma (NickB), Tuesday, 12 February 2019 11:33 (five years ago) link
Ha! 13.1 miles is plenty for me.
Have some mates doing the Race to the Stones this year but that pales in comparison to the Thames 250.
Good luck if you do enter
― groovypanda, Tuesday, 12 February 2019 11:41 (five years ago) link
it'll be more of a staying awake contest than anything else tbh, running wise it's just a slow plod to infinity
