just when i was confident i couldn’t think less of either peterson or mumford and sons...

This guy’s a ducking moron. Vice interview made it clear he’s propped himself up as some kind of disenfranchised activist - meanwhile he pulls 30 K a month. He’s making arguments out of thin air & it’s probably cuz his wallets shining. Just another deepak chopra

Sorry deep pockets chopra.

kermit meets muppets: in which we are shown weirdos & jordan peterson

I accidentally watched one of this guy's youtube videos y/day when I followed a link called sth like "how to stop procrastinating" (hah)

the short version is that I did not learn how to stop procrastinating and he had some (prob deservedly) harsh words for chronic procrastinators esp when they turn into middle-aged fuckups with no self-control and no honesty with themselves about the extent of their fucking up (hi there, it me etc) so I felt bad about myself and then I realised that I was watching a Jordan Peterson video and that yes, it was that Jordan Peterson

so now I am p. excited to get my revenge by listening to an hour-long podcast about what a blowhard he is as some extra sweet, sweet procrastination. thanks!

YouTuber Contra Points did a good show about Jordan Peterson recently..

https://youtu.be/4LqZdkkBDas

sorry for mobile link weirdness. someone recommended her on a different thread about a week ago and from the videos I've see I find her to be really clear, really smart, and fucking hilarious.

My first long exposure to Peterson's, ah, thought:

Mr. Peterson illustrates his arguments with copious references to ancient myths — bringing up stories of witches, biblical allegories and ancient traditions. I ask why these old stories should guide us today.

“It makes sense that a witch lives in a swamp. Yeah,” he says. “Why?”

It’s a hard one.

“Right. That’s right. You don’t know. It’s because those things hang together at a very deep level. Right. Yeah. And it makes sense that an old king lives in a desiccated tower.”

But witches don’t exist, and they don’t live in swamps, I say.

“Yeah, they do. They do exist. They just don’t exist the way you think they exist. They certainly exist. You may say well dragons don’t exist. It’s, like, yes they do — the category predator and the category dragon are the same category. It absolutely exists. It’s a superordinate category. It exists absolutely more than anything else. In fact, it really exists. What exists is not obvious. You say, ‘Well, there’s no such thing as witches.’ Yeah, I know what you mean, but that isn’t what you think when you go see a movie about them. You can’t help but fall into these categories. There’s no escape from them.”

yeah, and jordan peterson too

He always wears a suit. “I am a very serious person,” he often says.

You can almost hear Bowles wanting to add a "NARRATOR VOICE" joke here.

never thought i'd be nostalgic for the relatively harmless mental illness of dave sim but here we are i guess

Mr. Peterson stresses the importance of cleanliness, but honestly his office is a mess.

lol this asshole

never thought i'd be nostalgic for the relatively harmless mental illness of dave sim but here we are i guess

Eh, harmless only in that he's a lone nut who in the end only hurts himself, but you better believe that if he had his breakdown in 2018 there'd be an entire sub-culture there to enable him. And it'd be closer to incel shit than even Peterson.

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 18 May 2018 14:19 (six years ago) link

holy shit @ that incel part, I totally get why this dude is popular among dumbasses now

frogbs, Friday, 18 May 2018 14:42 (six years ago) link

like seriously is his whole shtick "hierarchies are necessary to society, except when it comes to women, who should be forced to marry undesirable men in order to protect their fragile male egos"

frogbs, Friday, 18 May 2018 14:48 (six years ago) link

But aside from interventions that would redistribute sex, Mr. Peterson is staunchly against what he calls “equality of outcomes,” or efforts to equalize society. He usually calls them pathological or evil.

They misspelled "ekwoahlity of oatcomes"

what you need to understand is that throughout all human history, ritual, and myth, the asshole represents chaos while the prick represents order, no soap and washcloth can change that fundamental truth and i will not be silenced

there is no neutral in Peterson's worldview, everything is binary

the taint is neutral, obv

Holy crap. I have never heard Jordan Peterson speak. I really thought that was some trippy Kermit the Frog for teaching children how to be good.

JP going on about myth, Dave claiming his deep reading of religious works helped him discover fundamental truths...

There’s no escape from them.”

and once you get past this semantic cake dance you can admit hundreds and thousands of people were tried, tortured, and killed as witches, that we have documentation of all of this as historical fact, and could look at how the label was historically used and abused to kill people by church and state, how it ties into the long history of the legal dehumanization of women. but no, more fun to blabber about how you interpret popular imagination. in fact let's bring up dragons too, cos everyone loves it when you drop a rollplaying reference these days.

nothing unique in going on about myth and legend in the abstract pseudo philosophical vein. people eat that shit up. this guy is an intellectual slug. "look at how we categorize things! aren't we gaining insight." ofc it impressed the pseuds.

Rule 10: Be precise in your speech

mick signals, Friday, 18 May 2018 17:12 (six years ago) link

Rule 13: Wash a hat.

Poisoned by Johan's pea soup. (Tom D.), Friday, 18 May 2018 17:15 (six years ago) link

1. Stand up straight with your shoulders back
2. Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping
3. Make friends with people who want the best for you
4. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today
5. Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them
6. Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world
7. Pursue what is meaningful (not what is expedient)
8. Tell the truth – or, at least, don't lie
9. Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don't
10. Be precise in your speech
11. Do not bother children when they are skateboarding
12. Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street

I'm going to paste the whole list because it's such a pleasant blend of real basic self-help common sense, vague bad advice, and shit I just need a couple more [looks out window for inspiration].

mick signals, Friday, 18 May 2018 17:19 (six years ago) link

9. Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you don't

is this like a 12-steps thing, you have to do the earlier steps before you can do the later ones

j., Friday, 18 May 2018 17:33 (six years ago) link

at no point does Peterson ever seem to consider that his critics might know something he doesn’t
