Is anybody else watching The Expanse?

Ratings would have benefited from casting a higher stature (and older) actor in the Holden role, and it seems negotiations for production financing would have benefited if either Netflix or Amazon had global streaming rights. If Netflix picks the series up, it would be their best original genre show, period. Pretty much every Netflix original sci-fi or fantasy show has been pants. If Amazon picks it up, it would join some fairly prestige (and high budget) productions, and be fairly superfluous.

I've done my bit, and bought each season on bluray, albeit used.

did you call them to tell them you bought a used copy and to count that as a sale or

mh, Saturday, 12 May 2018 01:31 (eight years ago)

Purchasers of used product, by driving the used price up and making the new product more price competitive, *and* making speculative purchase of the new product less risky, can drive sales. Just not as much as buying new. Every purchaser of a used but reliable Honda made buying a new one more attractive, and benefited Honda sales.

At any rate, I'm a dying breed, as I still buy paper books and physical programming, and old seasons of The Expanse for $16 + shipping. Most who purchased The Expanse did so via streaming services, esp. Amazon, as it was the only way to view it in less compressed 1080p for those with home theaters.

Netflix do have global streaming rights. That may even be part of the problem, Syfy don’t even have US streaming rights.

We watch paid through US iTune because it takes too long to turn up on Aussie Netflix - they aren’t really promoting it which may be a problem. Hope they pick it up though.

[Renewal megathread] EARTHERS, MARTIANS, BELTERS, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Help us save The Expanse! https://reddit.com/r/TheExpanse/comments/8iq1a0/renewal_megathread_earthers_martians_belters_we/

Not sure what each of these would accomplish, but at least these nerds are trying.

Jeff, Saturday, 12 May 2018 15:46 (eight years ago)

maybe we can get nbc to drop the cop show or whatever and pick up this instead

mh, Saturday, 12 May 2018 17:09 (eight years ago)

Imagine Brooklyn 99 is a lot cheaper to produce tho

groovypanda, Saturday, 12 May 2018 20:40 (eight years ago)

Damnit I've been holding off since the end of S1 so I could binge S2&3 together. I mean, I guess I can still do that, but still.

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 12 May 2018 22:05 (eight years ago)

Seems like a no-brained for Bezos Prime to pick it up. I just want Amos & Drummer to be in my life for a couple more years (would also not mind more time with a bunch of S1 characters, HI JARED HARRIS)

El Tomboto, Saturday, 12 May 2018 22:12 (eight years ago)

There are worse, bigger-budget shows than this on Amazon, no question

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 16 May 2018 20:29 (eight years ago)

How do they even calculate ratings these days?

Assume Netflix and Amazon can get exact numbers, but is cable still a random selection of people who have some special piece of hardware in their homes?

groovypanda, Wednesday, 16 May 2018 21:20 (eight years ago)

when cable switched to HD a box became semi-mandatory (or a card that goes directly into a tv) and those boxes can track iirc

xp Google seems to suggest it's still a system (Nielsen ratings) that only samples a very small percentage of American households - although that sample is scientifically worked out to give as accurate an extrapolation as possible.

It does mean though that lots of extra people watching The Expanse will be pretty meaningless unless some of those are part of the 0.03% with the requisite hardware to report views.

― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand),

I am assuming you mean S3, as S1/S2 are on Netflix UK ?
I just assumed that S3 would drop on Netflix later this year once the season has completed.

mark e, Thursday, 17 May 2018 09:17 (eight years ago)

yes s3

We get it through a US iTunes account - buy the season pass. Our Apple TV has US, UK and Australian accounts for exactly this reason.

That was a storming episode. I like how they’ve slowed the pace of the series right down for this Io storyline and really focussed in. It’s made for absolutely gripping TV. I’m stoked for the space jellyfish.

"I am that guy."

Most satisfying line of the series?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 17 May 2018 23:34 (eight years ago)

I mean i am getting an Amos T-shirt with that shit written underneath even if I have to buy it from myself on Redbubble

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 17 May 2018 23:35 (eight years ago)

The saddest thing about this getting cancelled will be not seeing how they adapt some of the later Amos story lines from the books.

American Fear of Pranksterism (Ed), Friday, 18 May 2018 02:31 (eight years ago)

I’m confused as to why I don’t already own that Amos T-shirt that Tracer just described

El Tomboto, Friday, 18 May 2018 03:42 (eight years ago)

Hell Amos’s escape from \REDACTED/ with \REDACTED/ after \REDACTED/ would make an awesome stand alone movie.

good timing that they just put out one of the top 5 episodes of the entire run

sentences that make you go hmm

The show was a cornerstone of Syfy’s rebranding effort that saw it shift to more science-fiction programming.

Didn't know Wes Chatham was already a fan of the books before.

I just realized something btw - what did Katoa do with all of the blood, when he took apart his nurse?

Having flown a #savetheexpanse banner over Amazon Studios HQ, now fans crowdfunded sending a model Rocinante into near space on a weather balloon this Friday. $4k in under 3 hrs.

Microtransgressions as a Business Model (Sanpaku), Monday, 21 May 2018 22:40 (eight years ago)

How much more would it cost to equip the Baby Roci with enough ordinance to shoot down that Tesla?

Looking down that list of continuing SyFy shows; the only one I’ve seen is Killjoys and that is a steaming turd (although presumably cheap to produce because they don’t appear to have spent anything on scripts, sets or acting talent)

groovypanda, Tuesday, 22 May 2018 11:19 (eight years ago)

Not quite caught up yet but there was a line in the third (I think?) episode of this season referencing the Belter/Earth dynamic that mapped so neatly onto Israel/Palestine that my jaw dropped a bit

Simon H., Tuesday, 22 May 2018 13:57 (eight years ago)

uh, reverse one of those to make the parallel actually work, obviously

Simon H., Tuesday, 22 May 2018 13:58 (eight years ago)

Which line was that?

Regreta Garbo (Leee), Tuesday, 22 May 2018 17:29 (eight years ago)

Avasarala (I think) was ranting about Belters relying on the OPA, I forget the specifics but it felt pretty pointed
