only when certain people share their Trump-inspired sexxytime. The Dem thread is grosser.

well tbh i'm not sure if it is deadpan but i like to think it is bc these dudes can't be serious srsly

F# A# (∞), Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:40 (six years ago) link

there's def a lot of Trump shit I don't care about, like Stormy Daniels and "OMG Paul Manafort just said that Johnny Poppadopalous took a Black Sea cruise with Paul Blart and PUTIN CRONY Evgeny Barishnakov in 2013, just as Trump was getting to build a new trump tower in Malaysia. A month later, Poppadopalous had lunch with a lobbyist for a Malaysian mining company."

i really appreciate the politics thread, the wit on display keeps me marginally sane

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:49 (six years ago) link

the trump/politics threads could be a LOT worse. i mean, you guys have seen this place, right? there is remarkably little fighting/rooster crowing on them. plus, Nedlinks.

but it is a total info dump. which i imagine might make some people's eyes go blurry.

scott seward, Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:53 (six years ago) link

man alive is wise.

I do sometimes get caught up in it as a way to pass the time, but yeah - I only really care about that stuff to the extent that it harms and hinders the wicked. Harming the wicked is not the same as helping the downtrodden but it may be a necessary first step.

let's not talk about the gincident (Ye Mad Puffin), Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:54 (six years ago) link

my feeling is this: I doubt the russia investigation is going to take down Trump. If it does, great, but there's nothing I can do to help it along, and getting caught up in every twist and turn just leads to agita (although occasionally also comic relief). Meanwhile, there's lots of actual political/policy stuff going on that is important and dangerous, and at least by talking about and caring about that I spread the word about something that might actually impact midterm elections.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Tuesday, 8 May 2018 19:58 (six years ago) link

Not to get too deep into a topic that people just don't care about ITT, but there's a fair argument to be made that the Russia investigation and various related clusterfucks will have a far greater impact on midterm elections than any policy details.

the politics thread is fucking awful. i understand why people do it, it's a coping strategy, but i can't cope with that sort of sustained car crash staring. i have to go to a lot of trouble to actively avoid anything that resembles "news". i turned off data on my phone yesterday because google keeps trying to keep me "informed".

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 12:40 (six years ago) link

You impute psychological terms ("coping strategy") to what's merely entertainment – for me anyway. It sits in the background on my work computer.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 12:51 (six years ago) link

i'm trying to be compassionate. sorry to be judgmental, but it strikes me as kind of monstrous to treat what's going on right now as "entertainment".

Arch Bacon (rushomancy), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 12:52 (six years ago) link

if you're trying to actively avoid news then i totally get hating the politics thread

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 12:55 (six years ago) link

how are one-liners and zings not entertainment? xp

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 12:59 (six years ago) link

oh, is this a semantic argument? because that was kind of what i meant by "coping strategy".

Ha is this now the backlash thread for all the bonhomie/backslapping in the "Why Do People Leave ILX for good?"

There are plenty of threads I steer clear of in here, it would never occur to me to run them down, but whatever does it for ya

DACA Flocka Flame (Hadrian VIII), Wednesday, 9 May 2018 16:40 (six years ago) link

people should always keep in mind the whole not caring part of the thread title on here.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2018 16:44 (six years ago) link

I begrudge no one for disliking the politics threads and the humor (or 'humor') therein. My own engagement is basically an attempt to build up a resistance to a variety of psychic poison which, one magical night in 2016, made me literally feel like I was going to die before the sun came up. Exposure therapy, I believe they call it.

Also, shit, what else am I gonna do with my day? My work?
