this is tokyo rosemary's fault
I did switch out my winter clothes for my summer clothes on Monday, so sorry not sorry!!!
― tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 3 May 2018 13:16 (eight years ago)
Seems like that might've been a tad premature...
Forty-degree jump a couple days ago, thirty-degree drop today. This is the kind of weather that makes me feel a little bit like I might be going crazy kind of maybe except actually probably so.

I watched the temperature drop 20 degrees in 20 minutes on my drive home today, that was fun.

Yes.
I love NY but I do not miss that. It's kind of terrible in the summer.

Us redhaads don’t stand a chance in this heat
― Ross, Thursday, 5 July 2018 19:45 (seven years ago)
Look how people dress in Arabia and the Sahara. Staying cool is not necessarily about exposed skin, but a circulating layer of airflow under loose fitting robes. As the continental interiors become humid deserts some of us will adapt, so there may be hope for redheads. Personally, I have some thawbs, which make nice nightshirts.
Meanwhile:Death toll jumps to 33 as heat wave continues to bake southern Quebec

Sahara has like zero humidity.
the fetid swamp i live in is not going to become a humid desert anytime soon.

117 °F here according to the nearest weather underground station

Incredible temperature gradients in LA County. *32 degree* difference right now between @UCLA campus (111) and the Santa Monica Pier ~5 miles away (79): a gradient of 6.4 degrees per mile over just 400 feet of elevation gain. (Remarkable vertical inversion too!) #CAwx #LAheatwave https://t.co/U2QYu5xmC7— Daniel Swain (@Weather_West) July 7, 2018
― 𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Saturday, 7 July 2018 02:37 (seven years ago)
So joking aside, now I’m actually curious as to why that happenedI had a friend text me about the temperature in LA today and was actually pretty shocked
― F# A# (∞), Saturday, 7 July 2018 03:00 (seven years ago)
The broiling temperatures were the result of a strong high-pressure system combined with offshore winds blowing from the desert to the ocean
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 July 2018 15:12 (seven years ago)
InterestingI’m actually relieved it’s not due to global warming
― F# A# (∞), Saturday, 7 July 2018 15:57 (seven years ago)
Well, it can be both, right? Global warming leading to those conditions.

please stop doing this
Just reporting the [bad news](http://www.pnas.org/content/107/21/9552.short). First spots to become surface uninhabitable, at least seasonally, will be coastal areas of the Persian Gulf, with the densely populated Ganges basin not far behind. But the shocker for me is how much worse wet-bulb temperatures in the Midwest will be compared to say current deserts the US West or the Atlantic coast at the same latitude.

Anyone sleeping more in the heat? Slept like 13 hours last night
― Ross, Monday, 9 July 2018 07:21 (seven years ago)
No, it goes like this:
Sleep 12am-3 or 4am, up for 90 minutes then either:
Fall back asleep until around 7.30/8am ORfail to fall asleep, grumble, get up and do some freelance work, then nap for around 90 minutes at some point in the afternoon when the property programmes are on.

it's been in the mid-80s in London for the last 2 weeks or so and i haven't wanted the AC. it helps that it's not very humid i guess.
― illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 10 July 2018 14:14 (seven years ago)
today's plunge into a more ordinary UK summer 20 degrees c is quite a relief tbh. Been loving the summer, but it's nice to able to cook a curry without feeling like your in the engine room of a steam ship.

1. Spices have antimicrobial and anti parasitic properties, and help protect people from meat and other protein that spoil rather quickly in a hot climate. They also help to mask off flavors of meat about to go bad. From an evolutionary perspective, the people who prepared spicy dishes had a higher chance of survival, and instructed their offspring to use spices as well.2. Spicy food causes people to sweat, which is the body’s way to cool off. More precisely, the spices trigger an increase in the metabolism, which raises the body’s temperature a little bit. This induces sweating as a mechanism for cooling off.3. Hot weather acts as a natural appetite suppressant; spicy food acts as an appetite stimulant.

Capsaicin(https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B-2XWDkPfB2OUFNfTlpKT1U5QXc?usp=sharing), the pungent compound from hot peppers that mimics heat, is a vasodilator. Like alcohol, this warms skin temperature in cold, but it also helps to dissipate excess. Also, may modestly extend lifespan.
