i was tipped over the edge by a controversy over a passage in issa rae's 3 year old book when she says black women should date asian men - but not filipinos because they're the blacks of asia or something - which yeah obviously that's dumb as fuck and racist etc. but who the fuck cares? i certainly don't

you have to be judicious about what you choose to engage with! I gave up on trump news and outrage culture over a year ago and my life is better for it. there are lots of communities on twitter that make it worthwhile

feel like kanye going maga is the biggest clusterfuck in the history of the platform and is on a very deep level 100% caused by it

This seems a popular opinion but it lets Kanye off the hook way too much imo. Twitter is the megaphone that Kanye picked up, and apparently millions are willing to listen. I find it hard to blame twitter - which is the absolute worst, yes, and yet - for that. In the end his stupid musings and opinions are his, not the platform's.

Precisely because the Kanye situation is ~more twitter culture~ makes it all the more bizarre and weird that Trump (who is *not* good at tweeting, come now, he's an illiterate monkey) ruffles feathers the way he does. Kanye just plays into the twitter game. He plays by the rules, keeps tweets nicely at about the old 140 chars. Bite-size stuff, like or RT plz. I don't see how that is - apart from very sad - in any way remarkable. Nor how the platform is somehow to blame for it, as you state.
Trump abuses the platform with brash irrationality and brain-dead thought farts. He's bad at twitter, which probably makes him good at twitter. Still a huge stretch to blame twitter for both of these idiots being on it.

can’t even begin to tell you how good quitting twitter has been for my mental health but i guess i’m just regular depressed instead of having my depression and anxiety constantly activated by a feed of bullshit, really no difference

Ive never followed political stuff or read or got into any discussions/debates (the short form seems entirely the wrong format for that), and the idea of even thinking about what Kanye thinks is not only alien to me, but counter-productive.

It seems to me that following that kind of stuff, combined with twitters 'endlessness' is hitting same part of brain as eg fox viewers watching endlessly and getting more riled, a form of radicalization (not necessarily in any direction but how that affects perception).
