but then i heard if i unfollow enough people i can return to the linear timeline so time to burn some bridges

yeah i am a lot pickier about who i will follow back because i don't want to be bombarded
i have unfollowed people because i can't deal with their volume of posts

Crazy thing is you can post multiple photos under one post! But noooooooo.....

lol at posts back in 2011 astounded that instagram was worth a billion dollars. that might have been the bargain of the century.

The instagram stories feature is one of the loneliest corners of the internet to me, a handful of people I follow just posting the same tired shit day in day out

i don't pay attention to stories
if someone wants to tell me something important, it will have to be more direct. i also don't like that it shows you who saw it. i have never posted one.

i feel like "normal" insta posts have become more polished over time, like flickr. stories now are more like regular posts used to be. they feel more suited to ephemeral stuff because they disappear after 24 hrs. it's like the "behind the scenes" version of your insta lyfe.

(also it shows up right at the top of people's feeds so they stand a better chance of seeing it)

i understand how they might work for some people. i don't like the way instagram incentivizes stories with the ability to see who has seen them. that makes them less appealing to me. the whole hierarchy of posts and what they mean is so tiresome. i just want people to remember i exist. that's about it.

now that i think about it, it bugs me that stories don't have likes. or maybe that's good, and regular posts shouldn't have likes either. i don't know. but they work totally differently, which is like.... why? you can comment on stories (i think?) but nobody ever does because it's not obvious how to do it.

i love stories. its like a tv channel run by friends & acquaintances and the UI is so easy to use, skipping to the next is a single tap. oh look, it's the bar i used to play, or wow my friend is at a temple Japan, or checking out highlights from last night's big concert.

i can see how it would work for other people, just not for me.

i haven't posted any, but no i generally don't want to know who has seen something. if someone likes something, that is nice but if someone has seen something...idk what that is supposed to say to me. it's one of the reasons i have never posted one. i want fewer quantification options in general, not more.

(also why i value ilx -- no quantification aside from the # of times i have posted, which is up to me)

lol it says they've seen it, is what it is supposed to say! :) but i totally understand the kickback against the weird competitiveness and statscock measuring that social media can engender

what's the significance of the 89,100 profiles listed in the instagram directory? why are there so many Arabic spambots? I don't see any rhyme or reason to the way they're catalogued, and I have no idea who (aside from spambots) would get any use out of this feature

ah, it looks like they're loosely organized by follower count, but beyond that it just seems like a random sampling of profiles

that doesn't look like a page that makes any logical sense, like it was someone proofing out api calls or it used to do something different but for some reason is still live

lot of people who would have been big facebook users have definitely migrated over to instagram in the past year. getting a lot more facebooky content these days

Instagram seems to be down.

seems like there are some photos from people i follow that never show up on my timeline now. i even got an "x just posted for the first time in a while!" notification for a photo that was never on the timeline. i could only see it by going to that person's own instagram page. i've mostly noticed it for people who have private accounts.

Since realising that I have a complete lack of visual memory / imagination (aphantasia) I've come to a very different understanding of how I use instagram - it IS my visual memory, basically. I look at my own pictures far more than I look at other people's. I also appreciate the simplicity of it.

It could be a personal thing, but I think Instagram has developed my visual sense. You start following some things you're really interested in: art galleries, asian and indian antiquities, exotic mediterranean holiday locations, pedigree cats, celebrity crushes etc - and after repeated attempts you start being able instinctively appreciate and critique the visual elements.

I can't really get with the story thing. I had to get someone to show me how they even work a couple of months back (I would've asked my daughters but I don't think I could have dealt with the level of eye-rolling) and I've never posted one. Maybe it's a bit too ephemeral? Or I don't have a story. I just use IG as a semi-social photo archive. The bar is a bit lower than for images I'd post to Flickr and I rarely instantly post from my phone. Also, it's not a public account. I've probably been getting IG wrong for four years now.

there is a small trend with a few ppl i follow who turn screen grab of paragraphs of text from news articles/interviews into instagram stories and it needs to STOP
put it on insta proper! i can’t read the whole thing in that short amt of time.

you can pause the stories by pressing them; probably easier to read long text that way

I've got someone who doesn't follow me at all but is constantly watching my stories which is even weirder imo. They're actively checking out my profile every day. :/

I would normally consider it creepy behaviour but I know this person irl and it's mostly mystifying why they wouldn't just follow me if they're that interested.

They all play in a row like youtube. A follower watching ur story everyday just means they are watching stories

Problem is the vast majority of stories are just like people walking their dog, or sharing some interesting looking garbage, or some badly lit shaking video of last night’s dinner

I started an instagram account to post short clips of myself playing guitar and singing. The only purpose of it is really to gradually get myself over my aversion to singing for people, which is a complicated childhood thing. I'm not playing any shows or recording anything so I have nothing to promote. It's kind of good for that -- I don't have to get a "perfect take" just a good-enough sounding 30 seconds of a song, and I can post it and get instant reassurance that I sound ok. I like using it also to see friends' music and visual art stuff.

That's about all I find it useful for, I find the visual diary aspect boring. In the iphone era everyone takes nice photos of food and picturesque city streets and hiking trails and stuff and it all becomes very samey.

My instagram tried to be more eclectic—i use it to document my experience of the city, strange things i notice or stuff i find visually interesting. I love instagram.

Yeah I will sometimes throw in stuff like that, in part just so that my account's visual impression isn't just a wall of very similar images of me facing the camera with a guitar.
