Why is that sometimes shitty office or diner coffee is inexplicably great? I'm not even talking about being in the mood for that kind of coffee, but literally from day to day from the same machine. Sometimes it just smells/tastes better.

x-post - ha yes. I was ridiculously jittery yesterday before I made the connection. Need to be mindful of how much I'm drinking. I have enough trouble sleeping as is.

I travel a lot and always make sure to bring my aeropress (and I keep instant packets in my bag for emergencies). At least it's NY where there is no shortage of coffee places.

unfortch our coffee consumption is v high ie cost prohibitive so we had to forgo local roasting except for birthdays & occasional indulgent weekends

my coworker has bought into some single batch home-roast kickstarter madness

he mainly drinks a couple cups at a time at home, so I guess it works, but damn

Coworker went to Cuba recently and brought back two bags of coffee. Pre-ground, but I’m not about to complain.

Just get a air popcorn popper. $20 new, $5 at a Goodwill store.

Personally, I'm content to leave this to the experts, as there isn't much cost savings. A $40 burr grinder is a much better investment.

I stayed in a B&B that I thought was using some ultra-gourmet stuff. Turned out to be Melita Dark Roast (I didn't get the exact name of it but it was some kind of Melita Dark Roast).

Having now tried a bunch of K-cups in the office, here are my top 5:

1) Newmans Own Special Blend Extra Bold -- this is the one that tastes the most like a nice, medium roast cup of coffee that you'd get in a decent coffee shop. If a good cup of brewed coffee is a painting, this is like a high quality color photograph of the painting in a monograph.

2) Barrie House Extra Bold -- this one has a relatively strong, pleasant and rich flavor for a K-Cup, but something about it makes you always conscious you are drinking a k-cup coffee.

3) Starbucks Breakfast Blend -- sort of a shittier version of the Newmans Own

4) Donut House Extra Bold -- does what it says on the tin, i.e approximates a decent cup of diner/donut shop coffee, mild and inoffensive in flavor but strong enough to get the job done.

5) Eight O Clock -- not terrible, don't know what else to say about it.

Most others I have tried are downright awful.

I was going through a weird whip cream phase on top of my ice black coffee a couple of years ago. I set a glass on my bedside table one morning and went back to the kitchen and when I came back my boxer dog of 10 years was on the bed finishing the glass. He had never done that before. I freaked out that his heart would explode but he was fine.
