for the last few days, facebook keeps freaking me out by suggesting i add an ex-girlfriend as a friend. i don't know if she just joined it or what, but suddenly she's in the "people you may know" matrix. eeps.

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Friday, 22 May 2009 06:52 (seventeen years ago)

cant you just delete the suggestion? maybe fb senses you can get it working again?

At my old house (which was slated for demolition to make way for condos) we used to write on the walls of our smoking room with Sharpies, and one wall was a tally of how many people each person in the house had slept with. My male roommate: total manwhore.

I have had a couple of messages from ilxors suggesting I visit sweet.be. I understand this is fb virus/bug thing. I know we're all too savvy to actually go to sweet.be and put our fb password in but just so you know...

How does one do this? (it's probably totally obvious, sorry)

I click the X when it's someone I don't know or don't want to but it still comes back a few days later.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 22 May 2009 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

I'd probably rather the whole "people you might know" thing got disposed of anyway cos it's led to me drunkenly adding lots of people I'm tangentally friends with and then I get anxious wondering if they think I'm a stalker/some annoying person who friends everyone they've ever met/etc although this time I did reconnect with someone who was a really good friend 10 years ago when I lived in another town and we're probably going to meet up for drinks so I guess it does have some uses.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Friday, 22 May 2009 13:36 (seventeen years ago)

I am pretty sure that Facebook indicates somehow that you found the person through "People You Might know". Not 100% sure though but I do remember seeing on my feeds activity amongst friends with that note.

ti's girl on the outside (musically), Friday, 22 May 2009 14:26 (seventeen years ago)

So is the recent uptick in viruses just among my FB friends? Or has there been a huge increase overall? I've gotten those virus messages from about 13 different friends over the past week or so.

OK. I tried to make a profile for my Dad at his request a couple months ago. For whatever reason it didn't work but tonight he popped up under my People You May Know thing. So, I accepted him. Well, he must have figured out how to sign in because I just looked at his profile and his current status is:

At what point is someone a "girlfriend"?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 11 June 2009 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

I feel like you have to have the what are we conversation (as awkward as that may be) before you can officially call her that.

sloth say hi to me (ENBB), Thursday, 11 June 2009 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

my gf is currently "engaged" to her best friend and there is no indication that will be coming to an end anytime soon.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 11 June 2009 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

I know a relatively new interracial couple that's in their early 20s. The younger black girl has 'in a relationship' with no designated boyfriend while the older white guy doesn't have his relationship status listed (but the status was quite specific when his gf was a beautiful blonde). I shouldn't stick my nose in other people's business (though that's the raison d'etre of Facebook) but I wonder if there's a racial or ageist dynamic in how they're (not) advertising their courtship - or how one half of a couple isn't advertising.

What do we make of girls who make every other status update about their (platonic) love for one of their friends? Kinda cute, or creepy?

Cunga, Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

I've deliberately left my relationship status blank since my last relationship ended so I don't have to have the 'can I de-single myself yet' conversation again next time.

chap, Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

My best friend and I have been facebook-married since before facebook was available at most colleges, let alone public. We haven't bothered changing it when we actually get into real relationships. Just another way of putting "none of your business," I guess. (I have had a couple people think it was serious, but I've also had date requests via facebook, so it can't put people off THAT much.)

Maria, Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

I made my relationship status blank again recently, not because I'm not committed or anything, just that I don't want to subject my girlfriend to all the click-throughs from every idiot from school that I don't even like very much.

Brundlefly (kenan), Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

i also don't want to be the subject of those "so-and-so changed her relationship status...do you know what's up with that?" conversations with people who don't actually know me well enough to ask. even though i've participated in them before.

Neither. "Hide (user)".

Brundlefly (kenan), Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

I forgot about that feature. The problem is they're nice girls otherwise, they just have those weird updates.

Cunga, Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i'm kinda weirded out and uncomfortable that my ex is gonna see my "Justin is now listed as 'in a relationship'"

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:51 (seventeen years ago)

So set relationship status to none, or whatever it is that makes that part not show up at all.

Brundlefly (kenan), Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

Some shit is just not everyone's business!

Brundlefly (kenan), Thursday, 11 June 2009 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

(Big talk from me, I guess... if you search the ILX archives, you'll know more about me than I know about myself with a quickness.)

Brundlefly (kenan), Friday, 12 June 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

ok so it turns out I'm fb friends w/ a guy who used to post on ilx, but I don't think he's very active anymore, and as far as I can tell he's not friends with any other ilxors

so I am still curious about how fb in its infinite wisdom decided to recommend that I friend an ilxor from the UK?

I know y'all are curious too, I can tell

鬼の手 (Edward III), Friday, 12 June 2009 01:56 (seventeen years ago)

it's weird how it keeps accessing your email contacts - i've used the 'friend finder' feature once, but new contacts that i've added to my email account since then have shown up in 'suggested friends'.

This would explain why my dad showed up in People You May Know recently, even though his only FB friend is his girlfriend.

yes i got this when i changed mine to blank, but i changed it from single to blank and for some reason a lot of people still messaged me saying "oooh so who's the lucky girl?" i didn't understand that.

definitely creepy. it also makes me slightly envious that i don't have platonic friends who are all "I MISS UUUUUUU SWEETIE WE *HAVE* TO GET TOGETHER SOON," insincere or not. not that i'd want to be friends with people like that, i just like the ego-stroking.

I once had friends like that. It was great for a while. But then I had to kill them all.

it probably beats girls who passively aggressively whinge about their boyfriends, because at least it's positive

EMPIRE STATE HYMEN (MPx4A), Friday, 12 June 2009 08:57 (seventeen years ago)

I'll feel bad about posting this later, but this is an actual FB status update that I was treated to earlier this week.

emotions are like mountains to me... and i'm barefoot. i wanted to cry last night but nothing would come out.... i feel like a stone. have you ever looked at someone and knew that inside they were dying and there was nothing you could do about it. but you knew someone who could if that "said person" could just search Him out... she sat before me and played her song and i could hear all the inner paininside.

Brundlefly (kenan), Friday, 12 June 2009 09:09 (seventeen years ago)

The last time I saw this person, I was kicking out of my apartment because if I didn't, I knew he would happily sleep on my sofa until he got old.

people who respond sincerely and sympathetically to status updates like that one bother me almost as much as the people who post them. but i think i'm just jealous of their apparent ability to be nice to EVERYONE regardless of how annoying other people are.

It's so much weirder than that with these two girls. I'm talking "Sarah Misses Susan Smith", "Sarah wants to be in Wyoming with SS" "Sarah loves Susan Smith", "Sarah's world is dark without SS" and wall posts that are just "I love you."

And I see a couple of updates or published wall postings like that every day. Every day.

Cunga, Friday, 12 June 2009 14:40 (seventeen years ago)

this social networking thing was all well and good until i posted a mildly funny, wholly inoffensive pol cartoon and now my brothr-in-law gets drunk and wants to "debate" it. on facebook. i don't think i want to play anymore.

^defense is impregnable (will), Friday, 12 June 2009 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

I have a strict no politics & religion policy for facebook. It astounds me that I have friends who don't.

Are you sure Sarah and Susan Smith aren't actually in love? (Coincidentally, I had an...um...romantic dream about some fictional girl named Sarah last night. Weird.)
