valorous wokelord (silby), Wednesday, 21 March 2018 05:20 (eight years ago)

expand on this one please

reading up on a certain profession's actual official code for a course i'm teaching, thinking of torturing the students by making them answer take-home exam questions about the code itself.

i thought this before, but it's super super clear after this (unrelated) readthru - the behavior of all these fbi agents and other govt officials in the news lately, documenting all their interactions, which could appear peculiar if you're viewing it through/without the relevant lens, watching a paranoid cable news network, etc., is utterly prosaic from the perspective of a profession with a high level of discipline, code enforcement, etc.

j. I asked because I'm working on developing a code of conduct / ethical guidelines for my own profession - curious as to which one you're reading up on. the origin stories for these things are fascinating too. completely agreed re: potentially peculiar behavior that makes perfect sense from inside the job

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 21 March 2018 19:34 (eight years ago)

the one for cpas - recently updated to incorporate a THREAT-SAFEGUARD conceptual model!

in my own profession they have recently been trying to institute a code, to somehow help with like predatory teachers and the like, and it seems to have nothing like the level of agreement and clarity about the purpose of the work (for obvious reasons), which makes what they've come up with so far sound pretty ad hoc

Ha. I was just coming here to similarly post that I'm stuck in the '60s atm. Gettin' heavy into AIP films. Watched the first two Frankie & Annette movies this weekend, which were a corny gas (the second, Muscle Beach Party, featuring the screen debut of Little Stevie Wonder and what I thought were some rip-off Beach Boys-esque tunes until I noticed Brian Wilson's name in the credits). It's this fun but weird and slightly distressing hermetically-sealed world existing parallel to the general social strife of the era that I've been feverishly reading about for the past year.

Across the You Never Her (Old Lunch), Monday, 23 April 2018 13:28 (eight years ago)

oh damn I haven't seen any Frankie & Annette movies but I always mean to every year after I watch the Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special

the AIP talk reminded me of a beach movie i watched last year. lots of slow cranked footage, bikers & rockers, basically felt like a silent movie updated in full color, like a live action cartoon.

on that note has anyone seen this?

sounds like a total disaster but look at that cast: Dick Dale, Herbie Hancock, Pee Wee Herman, etc.

I have seen Back to the Beach many many times. It was was of those movies that always seemed to be on TV when I was a kid. I'm sure it's awful but I have fond memories of it. Also, it did give us this gem. Fishbone!
