D’Arcy Carden showed up on this week's Lovett or Leave It podcast. She does some acting.

and T Danson KILLS IT on this show, i literally had no idea he was so funny (my bad.)

If that means you've never watched Cheers, we're finding that the early episodes hold up p well.
― No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Thursday, 8 March 2018 17:26 (eight years ago)
i was watching an old Cheers and i was amazed at the amount of dialogue. the best episodes are good little plays.

Shelley Long deserved a better post-Cheers career.
― Screaming into the void has never been easier (Sanpaku), Thursday, 8 March 2018 17:59 (eight years ago)
Agreed with all of this Cheers talk. The first 2-3 seasons are more theater than sitcom.
― Johnny Fever, Thursday, 8 March 2018 18:20 (eight years ago)
I wish Cheers was on netflix! A funny thing that we do since we are now old and tired, is when I don't want to go to bed early I will say "But Cheers* isn't even on yet!" or "But Empty Nest* isn't over yet!" *insert whatever random show that came on during that timeslot.
― Yerac, Thursday, 8 March 2018 18:21 (eight years ago)
cheers is totally on american netflix.
― scott seward, Thursday, 8 March 2018 18:24 (eight years ago)
Gah, I just searched on mine and it isn't. So annoying.
― Yerac, Thursday, 8 March 2018 18:25 (eight years ago)
cheers is fantastic
― lag∞n, Thursday, 8 March 2018 18:32 (eight years ago)
i know british people love it but frasier kinda curdles my blood. i tried really hard to like it when it was first on but i ended up hating being stuck in a room with them. they really wanted to be drawing room brilliant but it turned insufferable to me. that dad in the chair more of a demon than any eugene o'neill character. and his little dog too. felt so bad for any woman on that show.
― scott seward, Thursday, 8 March 2018 18:37 (eight years ago)
I've seen every episode of Cheers. I never could make it through any episode of Frasier. I never understood how that character was the spin off.
― Yerac, Thursday, 8 March 2018 18:39 (eight years ago)
I had no idea we liked Fraiser more than the yanks. I'm lukewarm on it myself.

frasier makes the bbc top ten:

― scott seward, Thursday, 8 March 2018 19:21 (eight years ago)
perhaps frasier has endured in the uk and colonies because class interplay has historically been a cornerstone of british light entertainment. the us rarely produces anything along class lines that resonates this well.
― reverse-periscoping (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 8 March 2018 19:59 (eight years ago)
and i'm not talking the diff'rent strokes/fresh prince/silver spoons "those ones are rich and those ones are poor", i'm talking the specific tension derived from aspirationals breaking away from their working class roots and trying to wodge themselves into the real upper classes (hyacinth, basil fawlty)
― reverse-periscoping (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 8 March 2018 20:05 (eight years ago)
yeah, i mean it could almost be a bbc show really.

The stuff about class in Cheers seems p real to me now that I live in the approximate Greater Boston Area. I don't know what stratum of Pacific Northwest society Frasier and Niles would even be aspiring to; if anything, the joke seems to be that they don't know themselves?
― No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Thursday, 8 March 2018 20:43 (eight years ago)
yeah, iirc in cheers frasier started as a proper posh snob and sort of became the british-aspirational type post-diane, by the time he got his own show his working class roots had become the whole point
― reverse-periscoping (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:03 (eight years ago)

He was great in Bored to Death too
― groovypanda, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:38 (eight years ago)
He shows up in season 2 of Fargo! Which I am currently watching.
― Yerac, Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:50 (eight years ago)
by all accounts he’s a really nice guy too, which must factor into the amount of work he’s been getting
― reverse-periscoping (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 8 March 2018 21:59 (eight years ago)
He's very much channeling Matt Smith in Doctor Who, which is a good thing in my book
― Mince Pramthwart (James Morrison), Friday, 9 March 2018 00:18 (eight years ago)
He was excellent on HBO’s Bored to Death. He’s been consistently working since ... forever? He and Steenburgen just seem like great, super professional across.
― rb (soda), Friday, 9 March 2018 00:36 (eight years ago)

No. Fuck off. No. You terrible and toxic influence on young girls. I admire their mother’s branding capabilities, she is an exploitative but innovative genius, however this family makes me feel actual despair over what women are reduced to. ☹️ pic.twitter.com/zDPN1T8sBM— Jameela Jamil (@jameelajamil) May 16, 2018

Apparently D'arcy Carden spells her name that way because she was a Smashing Pumpkins fan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EF1RB2IPfTo (Which makes me love her more, though ymmv)

Slightly sad that the American market for physical media is still ~45% 480p DVD, a dozen years after the introduction of backwards compatible 1080p blu-ray players. As an American with only a 120" screen, I own the UK S1 blu-ray, and am also sad that S2 won't be released until Feb 11, 2019.

Nope. A refurbed projector was cheaper than a panel TV. Its pretty ideal for me, as I don't "watch TV", I put on films for (sometimes) a couple hours a day.
― Roomba with an attitude (Sanpaku), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 22:40 (seven years ago)
However, this does make my DVD collection mostly accumulated a decade ago look pants. What you don't notice at 42" (resolution, compression artifacts) is pretty damn evident at 120".
― Roomba with an attitude (Sanpaku), Tuesday, 24 July 2018 22:41 (seven years ago)
NBC was pretty shrewd with restricting access to the good place season 2 via streaming.. I was only able to watch earlier eps (more recent ones were on hulu) via the nbc app, which required a cable subscription
