based that clip alone [not even judging their name] i can't imagine being a person who listens to cum town

Mordy, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 17:53 (eight years ago)

it takes all kinds

flappy bird, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 17:54 (eight years ago)

yeah apparently it takes dumb assholes too

Mordy, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 17:54 (eight years ago)

absolutely

flappy bird, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 17:59 (eight years ago)

what Will says approx. 44 min into the latest episode about how private schools are more laid-back is completely wrong, everything they said prior to that about public schools putting insane amounts of pressure on very young kids and making them incredibly anxious absolutely happens in private schools. speaking from experience. all that stuff they said about kids in 3rd grade being warned about getting into AP classes and good colleges is everywhere in private schools. Assuming he went to a private school in Manhattan (like me), I'm surprised he had that take. I also went to a Quaker school for HS, and it was not 'laid-back' though obviously not the under-funded and militaristic environment of public schools.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 18:04 (eight years ago)

i love my daughter's public school it's great

It's not delivery, it's Adorno! (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 18:40 (eight years ago)

yeah that whole segment on parenting and uh steel manufacturing(??) saw them veer a little too far out of their lane. the actual interview with the striking teacher was great, though, and I almost spat out my coffee when he said that his preferred outcome would be "...a worker's republic?"

Simon H., Tuesday, 6 March 2018 18:47 (eight years ago)

yea the interview was good

flappy bird, Tuesday, 6 March 2018 18:55 (eight years ago)

The DBHQ is the Dirtbag HQ, the Chapo-adjacent discord server.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Tuesday, 6 March 2018 22:02 (eight years ago)

Friend of the pod and the closest thing there is to a dirtbag on staff at a mainstream paper Liz Bruenig finally throws down the "s" word, invoking both Andrew Sullivan and Mark Fisher in the process.

Simon H., Wednesday, 7 March 2018 03:41 (eight years ago)

Sweet. Good on her.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Wednesday, 7 March 2018 07:36 (eight years ago)

welp this david cross appearance is extremely uncomfortable

Simon H., Thursday, 8 March 2018 02:49 (eight years ago)

His first was uncomfortable enough I'm surprised they brought him back.

louise ck (milo z), Thursday, 8 March 2018 03:20 (eight years ago)

honestly a decent producer/editor would have cut that whole Farrakhan argument

Simon H., Thursday, 8 March 2018 03:31 (eight years ago)

I haven't listened to the latest one yet, but sometimes they kind of flounder as it seems like they're all taking turns trying to stumble onto the *right* left take to have. I felt that way when they started talking about the Stoneman kids, like they couldn't really settle on a point to have about it but felt like they had to have some point about it.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 8 March 2018 03:59 (eight years ago)

ha, just came here to post pretty much exactly what simon did

cross comes across as a cranky asshole in pretty much every interview i've ever heard with him, i think that's just his deal

lol at him and felix arguing about louis farrakhan of all people tho

War, Famine, Pestilence, Death, Umami (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 8 March 2018 09:11 (eight years ago)

Felix was also taking some big swings at jokes with Cross there

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 8 March 2018 15:56 (eight years ago)

which one of them was pro farrakhan? i keep trying to guess but i could really see it going either way.

Mordy, Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:06 (eight years ago)

neither, really - felix was dismissive of him as a spent force, cross was adamant that farrakhan was still a dangerous public figure

War, Famine, Pestilence, Death, Umami (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:09 (eight years ago)

It was a really dumb argument tbh, assumptions of bad faith on both sides. They just seem to irk each other to some extent

That said, DC's little digs at the podcast were kinda rich considering how he made his bones...telling (bad, mostly) jokes into microphones

Simon H., Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:12 (eight years ago)

(imo Cross is an excellent comedic actor but a mediocre-at-best comic and a generally unpleasant dude)

Simon H., Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:12 (eight years ago)

I only heard DC's first appearance on the show, but I got the sense that he likes to take issue with whatever someone else is saying in order to make himself look the "smart one."

President Keyes, Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:14 (eight years ago)

i feel like cross might be kinda butthurt that the chapo folks haven't paid their dues toiling for years in shithole comedy clubs, and he kinda has a point in the sense that they still suck on stage, but podcasting isn't standup so wgaf rly

War, Famine, Pestilence, Death, Umami (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:14 (eight years ago)

neither, really - felix was dismissive of him as a spent force, cross was adamant that farrakhan was still a dangerous public figure

fwiw this is really interesting to me more bc of cross + his relationship to jewishness which he has often disavowed but of which i read his concerns about farrakhan as being operative

Mordy, Thursday, 8 March 2018 16:19 (eight years ago)

i.e. ime jews are more concerned about farrakhan than the general pop (for i think obvious reasons) and so i'm kinda using it as tea leaves vis-a-vis cross which is why i was curious where he stood. i mean this is just trivia ultimately but something i've sorta had an eye on for over a decade.

Marc Maron Syndrome

flappy bird, Thursday, 8 March 2018 17:43 (eight years ago)

yeah cross is a total prick in this episode

flappy bird, Thursday, 8 March 2018 18:37 (eight years ago)

There’s something to be said for coming on these kinds of shows and making the hosts defend their statements—although that can get tiresome in practice.

In theory, I like the idea of them more openly disagreeing, arguing, etc., on the show. But in reality I usually don’t like to listen to any kind of extended debate. Gets me agitated.

Didn’t they have a right wing guy on once? Maybe they did and didn’t release it?

ryan, Thursday, 8 March 2018 19:13 (eight years ago)

i have heard at least one Cross-is-a-kook story

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 8 March 2018 19:14 (eight years ago)

xp Yeah, you can find the unofficial Matthew Walther episode on Youtube. It's ridiculous.

jmm, Thursday, 8 March 2018 19:16 (eight years ago)

Didn’t they have a right wing guy on once? Maybe they did and didn’t release it?

yeah they dumped it on youtube. forgot the guy's name. it was pretty funny.

and i agree that guests should challenge hosts should the feeling arise but this one was extremely stupid

flappy bird, Thursday, 8 March 2018 19:16 (eight years ago)

They interviewed the trad cath guy who wrote the anti-Chapo article and yeah it was bad

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 8 March 2018 20:09 (eight years ago)

And heeeeere it is:

https://youtu.be/jvN464imtMQ

It’s hilarious how you can pinpoint the precise instant Matt loses it.

Also, Amber(who was not a full co-host at that point yet they were recording in her apartment) was threatening Will with complete de-friending if he didn’t let her on to confront the guy.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 8 March 2018 22:42 (eight years ago)

Its the second time they had a conservative/Libertarian on. The previous was Robby Soave from Reason, I think, who seemed to fold when confronted with the implications of his beliefs.

Episode 17, I think.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 8 March 2018 22:50 (eight years ago)

The David Cross episode wasn't that bad - Felix was as much of an asshole as he was.

louise ck (milo z), Thursday, 8 March 2018 23:04 (eight years ago)

seriously so many fuckin people in this world think the predator is the best ice cube album smdh

i can take or leave a lot of cumtown and i certainly wouldn't pay for it, but imo everyone should be dunking on peterson and his saddo acolytes all day every day.

Oh no

I debated Matt about video games again on cable news https://t.co/AdptOMvnmS So far I’m two for two... a remarkable winning streak in defense of game’s

Virgil dressed like this, and Matt wore a terrible shirt, both very on-message
