I have a real job but that hasn't stopped me, tbh. Also I get the majority of my news and commentary from ilx, the denizens of this remit mostly supplying the info and angles that I need to understand things. Other news outlets are largely incomprehensible and/or don't really give the inside scoop commentary that I appreciate.
ilx feels less like a "freewheeling" space where anything could happen, these days, but half of what could happen back then was going to be mean, sexist, racist, or some variation on all three. There were major shakeups among nb/nyc ilxors back in the day incl v srs interpersonal issues. It wasn't all kittens and bike polo.
― Conic section rebellion 44 (in orbit), Monday, 26 February 2018 21:22 (eight years ago)
The bike polo aspect was so overrated imo
― Simpson L. (darraghmac), Monday, 26 February 2018 21:23 (eight years ago)
xp to LJ
Renowned for it! Avocets, spotted redshanks, red knots, common redshanks, grey plovers, bar-tailed godwits, golden plovers, curlews, dunlins. All here.

Skinny is relative Deems, compared to me iirc
ah man, wading birds are p much my favourite and you have named nothing but wading birds
― imago, Monday, 26 February 2018 21:24 (eight years ago)
it occurred to me once that the only people who never bug me on facebook are past and present ilx people. like, ever. plus, i never have to explain myself to ilxors there when i post something. which is another reason why i still come here. that and the ocd.
― scott seward, Monday, 26 February 2018 21:25 (eight years ago)
I sort of miss when jon used to break the nb so that it would rain neon unicorns or w/e across the screen, I have to admit.

here is his final confirmed sighting, in 2014: your terrible ideas
― imago, Monday, 26 February 2018 21:38 (eight years ago)
Wasn't there a late night aim chatroom that people would start and invite certain people to? I can't really remember.
― Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 21:38 (eight years ago)
Yes aim/ILX was a thing for a good while.

― mark s, Monday, 26 February 2018 21:40 (eight years ago)
It was. I miss putting shoes on my head tho I don't know that anyone will remember that.
I think there is a regional slack room for one group and then I know about one entirely separate "secret" board but I am not a part of either.

― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 26 February 2018 21:43 (eight years ago)
Oh I remember that. That was actaully very fun. Wait - I only barely remember Chad. Who was chad?? Some random person, right?
― Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Monday, 26 February 2018 21:45 (eight years ago)

― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 26 February 2018 21:46 (eight years ago)
AG, I remember where I was living at the time and think that was all 2008 so exactly 10 years ago. O_O

Chadz
― Simpson L. (darraghmac), Monday, 26 February 2018 21:47 (eight years ago)
I wonder if chad is still broadcasting his life 24/7 on webcam
― Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Monday, 26 February 2018 21:47 (eight years ago)
Yeah I was just thinking that (10 years argh)

Chad from California. I'm sure you can track him down. How many can there be?
― Evan, Monday, 26 February 2018 21:49 (eight years ago)

KM will keep us together, it's the truth.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 26 February 2018 21:53 (eight years ago)
In Orbit, I am so bad about figuring out who people are when they don't have their original name in parentheses. I just re-read all the luna posts and so much is coming back to me. Like, how much I disliked the TITTWIS threads.
― Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 21:54 (eight years ago)
And yeah, I think I blocked out how mean some people were, but I am probably comparing it to how terrible most of the internet is nowadays.
― Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 21:55 (eight years ago)
ILX's old school paragraph long vicious screeds or succinct insults like "you waste. you little man." seem pretty quaint compared to trump-era internet.
― omar little, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:00 (eight years ago)
think putting the usernames at the bottom of the post instead of on top or on the side like other message boards affects the experience a lot. you read the post, then who posted it. for a while I never really paid attention to who was who, unless they had really good music taste. I wondered why I was getting yelled at in half the threads I posted in until I realized it was like the same two people every time
― frogbs, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:03 (eight years ago)
The blue sticks out too much for me for that to be true tbh. But the plain and simpleness of ilx is obv its USP.
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:05 (eight years ago)
And your rocky start was mentioned but you've redeemed yourself more than fully thru the vaporwave shares and yessing out imo
― Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:06 (eight years ago)
I didn't realize that they changed the display name properties so you can't just change it completely without the parentheses showing up.
― Yerac, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:07 (eight years ago)
as someone who does the least possible to maintain whatever social media accounts i have, i find other forms of online interaction are typically more prescriptive about how much you have to engage with them and i appreciate that ilx has a pretty free-moving sliding scale, usual social impediments aside. there is an experience for ppl who want to join in and post voluminously and get involved with off board stuff, and there is an experience for ppl who want to trick their brain that they are interacting with other human beings even when they have no inclination (or aptitude) to actually do so.
― Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 26 February 2018 22:10 (eight years ago)
i'm one of the admins of a facebook group with 15,000+ members and originally i really dug it and stopped going on ILM at all but it has since devolved into beatles shit and dudes and i kinda can't stand it now. but it has been a long winter. there are ilxors there. and some who have left that group too! or stopped posting anyway. when ilx is 100% beatles shit and dudes it will be time to pull the plug.
