just for one quick example, the threads where people would make fun of other people on the board were at least somewhat openly mean-spirited, at least they were imo

i always felt bad when people got picked on here. even if they were being jerky or obtuse. nobody has ever really picked on me here and if that was common i totally wouldn't still be here. i never understood the people who were gluttons for punishment. why they took/take abuse for so long. maybe some people just like getting yelled at.

Thankfully I've only ever gotten consistent grief from one mysteriously-beloved dickhole who's since vacated the premises. It wasn't enough to make me leave but it was a fuckin' bummer and definitely curbed my posting significantly.

this happened to me too. where i really thought i was going for good because of one person. i couldn't take it. i did actually leave for awhile because of it.

I was terrified of the "what a horribly formed 'joke'" thread because I both like to joke and can be pretty sensitive (more so in the past).

i hate 'likes' and hate 'upvotes' even more, all of that shit is poisonous

Starting to post here again after years of Facebook was really a trip because you have to lay down your thoughts without any knowledge of what the majority thinks of them beyond yr own ability to read the room. It's kinda scary but leads to way more interesting convos, also when someone does go "OTM" the endorphin rush is so much sweeter.

I don't ever like people being dicks about other people unless those other people have really done something to deserve it, think I'm probably not alone in this, but it's difficult to forcibly stand up for wishy washy opinions even if they are obviously right.

The only thing beneficial about likes and upvotes is knowing someone read your post? ILX is full of little essays followed by responses to other posts or new little essays. Upvotes or likes compensate for the fact that you can't pick up on normal face to face conversation visual or audio cues. You have to see someone respond to a point nested in your essay to find out whether you're even part of the discussion.

i know what you're saying, but i don't buy this. i think likes/upvotes/quantifying response can be toxic to both the discussion and the self. i would rather know someone is engaging with someone i said by seeing what i said quoted and responded to. that's how you know you are part of the conversation :) voting/liking is not conversationally equivalent to body language imo.
