Anglo-Americans and David Clarke.

I mean obviously his office will say he was talking about the office of "sheriff" itself etc. (Because you know other cultures don't have law enforcement, they all just run around willy nilly.)

xpost!

He also used similar language in a speech last week, referring to the late Justice Scalia as "one of the best judges in American history, and maybe even the Anglo-American tradition." https://t.co/TpCqH5sVkK

The Anglo-American traditions of law and justice that brought us Dred Scott, Jim Crow, and all-white juries.

it's okay, guys. anglo-schmanglo. the stock market's almost back to where it was right before the republicans added $1.5 trillion to the deficit to make permanent corporate tax cuts : )

reggie (qualmsley), Monday, 12 February 2018 18:38 (eight years ago)

The market was more or less priced for the tax cuts before the tax bill passed anyway. It's only lately they've started thinking about the macro-economic effects of a massive stimulus in a full employment economy, instead of just the big injection of short term corporate profits.

I'm not fond of Barack's but I'm not the world's biggest Wiley fan. Michelle's is quite nice.

Jeff Sessions to the Union League, marking Lincoln Day: “Slavery was the cause of the war. It was not states’ rights or tariffs or agrarian versus industrial economies….The cloud, the stain of human bondage—the buying and selling of human beings—was the unsolvable problem." pic.twitter.com/eZCC7woODu

Would you mind repeating that, Jeff... a few hundred more times... in Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina, Louisiana, Florida, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri and Kentucky... in public... LIKE YOU MEAN IT?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 12 February 2018 20:30 (eight years ago)

Was that Sessions trying to let the Constitutional Sheriff goons know he had their back?

my dreams in the hell-pits (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Monday, 12 February 2018 20:41 (eight years ago)

actually it did get solved, by the south getting their asses handed to them and lincoln setting the slaves free. i mean yeah we're still living with the consequences and reconstruction was a disaster but slavery wasn't "insoluble"

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 12 February 2018 20:50 (eight years ago)

smoking in restaurants... how can we surmount this insoluble problem

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Monday, 12 February 2018 20:50 (eight years ago)

Weird that he encourages the Constitutional Sheriff goons' babbling delusions on the one hand, but then steps squarely on the delusions of the Lost Causers.

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 12 February 2018 20:52 (eight years ago)

I don't think it's always all that calculated (what these fuckers say to whom when). If we're like trying to read the tea leaves about who said what where. Sometimes it's just ham-handed stupid obvious pandering (Trump telling cops not to guide the heads of suspects through car doors). Sometimes someone accidentally says what they're really thinking (Romney saying almost half the people are irredeemably lazy).

If sometimes someone (in this case Sessions) accidentally says an actual real true thing that undercuts the overall GOPgenda of racism and greed? Maybe it was s sly staff member. Maybe on alternate Tuesdays he's a really woke dude and an ally? Who knows, who cares. The policies are still shitty.

I'm walking on Sondheim (Ye Mad Puffin), Monday, 12 February 2018 21:00 (eight years ago)

if even sessions has to say this, i wonder if we're actually reaching the point where ppl will finally quit saying "ya know, the civil war wasn't really about slavery" which is at once a classic crazy right-wing meme and also the sort of thing you weirdly still hear from ppl of all political persuasions, sometimes in a "you can't trust what you're taught in school!" kind of way and sometimes in an "all wars are based on total lies!" kind of way.

From Ned's link:

However through all of this, I am thankful for something. I have realized how much of a shithole organization Turning Point USA is, and am glad I got out of this bullshit before I invested my whole life into it, let alone just my senior year of college.

Simon H., Monday, 12 February 2018 22:04 (eight years ago)

It's surreal how the NRA has given up all pretense of being anything but fascists - they've been that way since the '70s but it was still surprising and controversial when they called federal law enforcement jack-booted thugs and even into the 2000s there was some cover of just being a group that was really into guns.

louise ck (milo z), Monday, 12 February 2018 22:04 (eight years ago)

yeah on one level it's pretty funny but on another it's legit terrifying

That looks like a rolling pin, which suits France.

I didn't know fascism had a standard icon!
