Reading series on McArdle is like a movie on MST3K that's so bad that even making fun of it doesn't quite displace the depressing fact of watching it in the first place.

ryan, Thursday, 8 February 2018 16:49 (eight years ago)

I liked their commentary on the super bowl commercials, that hyundai ad really is dystopian in a world where it's getting tired to call things dystopian. Mark Leyner was the right reference point.

SMDH they didn't press record on the first Glen Greenwald interview.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Thursday, 8 February 2018 16:54 (eight years ago)

indeed, tho ime mistakes like that usually result in a superior second take

Simon H., Thursday, 8 February 2018 16:57 (eight years ago)

I always enjoy mcardle dunking but yea i agree this last one was essentially interchangeable with any of the others in the past. i'm digging the new episode w/ GG so far.

flappy bird, Thursday, 8 February 2018 17:43 (eight years ago)

lol wait did they really fuck up a first interview with GG? I was sure that was a bit. I want to believe that was a bit.

flappy bird, Thursday, 8 February 2018 17:44 (eight years ago)

Dude, Felix records solo casts with his xbox headset. Matt never learned how to use his mic. Shows have gotten eaten before. They never figured out what to do about their website.

I fully believe every fuckup is real, as anything they try to do which isn’t in their sole competencies of talking, writing, or books goes sideways real quick, and they ain’t all that competent at those sometimes.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 8 February 2018 17:57 (eight years ago)

enh, the fuckups are overstated imo. they generally produce two entertaining episodes a week, where a lot of more technically proficient shows are only on the ball maybe half the time

Simon H., Thursday, 8 February 2018 18:02 (eight years ago)

the ever-reliable Tim Crulge on ASC

Even if it doesn’t want to champion single-payer, USC can, doubtless, advocate for undeniably good things. It can harness its resources to advocate for Medicaid expansion, without exception or means-testing, in states that have rejected federal funds—this leads to a reduction in the mortality rate, especially among communities of color. It can demand comprehensive reproductive justice (including both abortion, a basic and essential medical procedure; and medical and social support for people who struggle during pregnancy) or the funding of home health support for disabled people, where we have chosen to deny it. It could throw itself behind Virginia’s HB 1466, which prohibits insurance discrimination on the basis of gender and trans identity. It could even lobby for municipal issues that advance the cause of health justice, like the upcoming city council vote on paid sick leave in Austin, Texas. These things provide immediate material benefit to people who need them and it is our collective responsibility to put our shoulders to the wheel for them whenever and however we can.

United States of Care could back any of these reforms—but if we take them at their word, they probably won’t. Because all of these reforms are political.

in twelve parts (lamonti), Thursday, 8 February 2018 23:59 (eight years ago)

see garland is 1000% more fun to dunk on imo, though he is becoming more of a fringe figure. they might have to move on the idk Seth Abramson soon

Simon H., Friday, 9 February 2018 00:03 (eight years ago)

oh my

Thanks for being really mean for no good reason, Emma. I want most of the same things you do and am just trying to help however I can.

Simon H., Friday, 9 February 2018 13:14 (eight years ago)

this is one of my favorite sub-genres of concern troll:

You're not wrong, either. One of the more vexing things on my end is watching people argue in favor of single payer without an open and honest acknowledgement of the political and logistical challenges inherent in implementing it.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 9 February 2018 15:38 (eight years ago)

Tim should absolutely go on PSA and wreck their lives.

Simon H., Friday, 9 February 2018 15:41 (eight years ago)

Oh no every single person who supports a policy doesn't understand all of the nuts and bolts of how to implement it.

Maybe we shouldn't go to war because some of the people who support it aren't familiar with the details of the military's counterinsurgency manual.

Hmm actually come to think of it . . .

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Friday, 9 February 2018 15:43 (eight years ago)

Oh god this guy is so insufferable

Whether or not I detest Bill Frist (for whom I have endless contempt) is orthogonal to the question of how to best move toward the goal of Medicare for all (which I fully support)

— Daniel Summers (@WFKARS) February 7, 2018

Uh... how the group's actions will advance that particular goal is on the group to promote. If it, say, offers policy proposals that assure people like me that revenues will be sufficiently stable to keep our practices open, I'd call that rather an important factor.

these people need to stop taking adderall and take a crash course in economy of words

flappy bird, Friday, 9 February 2018 19:00 (eight years ago)

ok that tweet from that guy earnestly bitching about how people aren't considering how hard it'll be to implement medicare 4 all or argue for it is making me really angry how the fuck does that guy have a job in... whatever field hes in

Katie Halper has Adam Johnson on her regular show today, and Tim Faust on the patron-supported one

They both dump on the astroturf group

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Saturday, 10 February 2018 00:06 (eight years ago)

That’s queued up for me for doing the dishes tonight. Adam Johnson is very good. Has he goed on Chapo? I don’t think so. His citations needed podcast is good too.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Saturday, 10 February 2018 02:41 (eight years ago)

he has not.

Simon H., Saturday, 10 February 2018 08:19 (eight years ago)

Halper is good politically but I find her show a bit dull tbh

Simon H., Saturday, 10 February 2018 08:20 (eight years ago)

Depends on the guest, I figure

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Saturday, 10 February 2018 09:52 (eight years ago)

every time someone says something to the effect of "I don't feel comfortable picking on Garland, he seems unstable" I'm gonna remind them he makes a decent chunk of change churning out shit like this

I don't wanna get all Game Theory, but I'm beginning to wonder if some people here in 2014 kinda liked what happened in Ferguson. As a PsyOp.

— Eric Garland (@ericgarland) February 9, 2018

Simon H., Saturday, 10 February 2018 18:21 (eight years ago)

oof that is a Bad Take

he facked his death (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 10 February 2018 18:41 (eight years ago)

If eric garland thinks BLM is a russian psy-op i guess he's on board with white supremacist cops murdering their activists on the reg then

But doctor, I am Camille Paglia (Bananaman Begins), Saturday, 10 February 2018 19:26 (eight years ago)

let me be the first to say this looks like a bad idea

https://www.amazon.com/Chapo-Guide-Revolution-Manifesto-Against-ebook/dp/B079RLXFYB/

The creators of the cult-hit podcast Chapo Trap House deliver a manifesto for everyone who feels orphaned and alienated—politically, culturally, and economically—by the bloodless Wall Street centrism of the Democrats and the lizard-brained atavism of the right: there is a better way, the Chapo Way.

In a manifesto that renders all previous attempts at political satire obsolete, The Chapo Guide to Revolution shows you that you don’t have to side with either the pear-shaped vampires of the right or the craven, lanyard-wearing wonks of contemporary liberalism. These self-described “assholes from the internet” offer a fully ironic ideology for all who feel politically hopeless and prefer broadsides and tirades to reasoned debate.

Learn the “secret” history of the world, politics, media, and everything in-between that THEY don’t want you to know and chart a course from our wretched present to a utopian future where one can post in the morning, game in the afternoon, and podcast after dinner without ever becoming a poster, gamer, or podcaster.

The Chapo Guide to Revolution features illustrated taxonomies of contemporary liberal and conservative characters, biographies of important thought leaders, “never before seen” drafts of Aaron Sorkin’s Newsroom manga, and the ten new laws that govern Chapo Year Zero (everyone gets a dog, billionaires are turned into Soylent, and logic is outlawed). If you’re a fan of sacred cows, prisoners being taken, and bars being held, then this book is NOT for you. However, if you feel disenfranchised from the political and cultural nightmare we’re in, then Chapo, let’s go...

Simon H., Wednesday, 14 February 2018 12:51 (eight years ago)

‘Aaron Sorkin’s Newsroom manga’

this is a p good joke tbh

the ghost of tom, choad (thomp), Wednesday, 14 February 2018 13:35 (eight years ago)

does garland actually make a decent chunk of change though? i thought his patreon was like 12 dollars a month

global tetrahedron, Wednesday, 14 February 2018 14:36 (eight years ago)

I can't seem to open his page rn, but whatever he was making on Patreon + the paid subscribers to his locked twitter feed + whatever other grifts he's got going = more than he should be making to be an utter fraud. (obv nothing close to chapo bucks)

Simon H., Wednesday, 14 February 2018 14:40 (eight years ago)

yeah, the book feels like it's going to overly spell out the theory of things that is already implied by the podcast and better left that way

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 14 February 2018 14:58 (eight years ago)

‘a fully ironic ideology’ noooooooo

i’ve really enjoyed the stuff i’ve read from amber, felix and virgil in the past but i dunno if the world needs a chapo book

will probably torrent it at some point for maximum dirtbag points
