Thanks aldo, I try. What I want from my pubs is not a soulless cavern, sullen (and useless) bar staff and a minimalist range of drinks which doesn't even include Guinness or non-horrible wine.

ailsa, Monday, 15 October 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

I think if you want to avoid drunken football nutter types (present company excepted) iMono is the ideal place. Shame about the lack of Guinness all the same.

onimo, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

who needs guinness and wine when you've got organic cider?

grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

also: they're not sullen, just shy indie mokes. (who are sometimes useless, yes.)

grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

It's been so long since I went to Mono that I've decided I quite like it after all.

Madchen, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

hey guys when is a good time to visit glasgow in november?

ken c, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

any time is ken time, ken!

grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

Totally!

Madchen, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

is there going to be good dancing going on 3rd/4th?

ken c, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

i dislike mono a fair bit and find the staff not shy but downright rude much of the time (worst offender that fat prob. gay guy). having said that though ailsa's mono hatred has taken on a life of its own by this point but on a day like this it's probably the best option - especially since she always recommends scary places. she's ruled out the saracen head this time but i'd be absolutely terrified to go in there regardless of the day.

not that i ever get round to coming so disregard all that if you wish.

jed_, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

My Mono hatred is mostly self-parody these days. There are better pubs though - the one right across from the road from it at least does a proper pint. The Sarry was, I think, Grimly's idea originally, prior to me informing him that there was an Old Firm game on.

ailsa, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

oh i know that, ailsa. i do exactly the same.

jed_, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

re the self parody i mean.

jed_, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

It should perhaps be noted that my original proposal of the Saracen's Head was a joke. That I was taken seriously surprised me a little!

Madchen, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

(Saracen Head not scary pre-Barrowlands gigs, depending who's playing. I'm guessing it will be quite scary this week, which is why it's not an option. Embrace your fear of not-really-scary Glasgow pubs!!)

ailsa, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

exactly. it's a cracking pub.

however: even the best pub in the world becomes a spunkpit once it's full of football fools.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 October 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

I'm thinking me and grimly's ideas of cracking pubs are quite similar, and not really to everyone else's taste :-)

ailsa, Monday, 15 October 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

except for the fact i think mono is cracking, too!

but yeh: i like old pubs full of old mentalists.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 October 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

jed_'s fat mono ugly-david-van-day guy is a total dickhead, yeh

bar 91 is fine, in reality. just haven't been in there in a while because I always used to go there

not that I am going to be around for this, probably

RJG, Monday, 15 October 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

david-van-day guy

:)

i nearly got battered in bar 91 once -- with really good reason, too. i'm not promising i can recreate this on saturday, but you never know: another dude with a long-standing and legitimate grudge against me might well be sitting by the door when i walk in. bloodsport for all, etc.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 15 October 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

good to see the usual solid working-towards-a-consensus in progress! someone sort it aaht by Friday arvo when I can look at an internet in Brixton.

Where are you staying, EFG?

3uro H0stels Glasgow, I think on Clyde St. Happy to go anywhere though (old mentalists fine, football mentalists no), I should be able to get the stage times on Thursday morning to assist in planning.

energy flash gordon, Monday, 15 October 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

Is the Hielan Jessie scary? I often admire its architecture from the number 40.

Madchen, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

I think I may be paying a work-related visit to the SECC on the 26th this month. Are weegeez around for drinks that weekend?

Stevie T, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

Are you going to the Arcade Fire gig then? accentmonkey is over for that as well, so there are tentative drinking plans afoot.

ailsa, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 11:27 (eighteen years ago)

Grand - I missed the monkey when she was in London!

Stevie T, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 11:28 (eighteen years ago)

:(

RJG, Tuesday, 16 October 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

Saturday stage times:

Chris T-T @ 7:15
Frank & Walters @ 7:55
Carter @ 9pm.

Now someone tell me where to be! (it's going to wind up being Mono, isn't it...)

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 18 October 2007 12:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yup

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

Mono at ... 5 o'clock?

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

Hang on, what time is rugger?

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm. 7.30pm. Walkabout after Mono anyone?

Madchen, Thursday, 18 October 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

bugger rugger

RJG, Thursday, 18 October 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

hang on, i thought we were doing bar 91?

grimly fiendish, Thursday, 18 October 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)

As always, everythings defaults to fucking Mono

ailsa, Thursday, 18 October 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

bar 91

RJG, Thursday, 18 October 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

BAR 91, PEOPLE. WE'RE GOING TO MEET IN BAR 91.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 19 October 2007 07:52 (eighteen years ago)

(because if we do go to mono, ailsa will spend all night knacking my nads about it, and i really don't want that.)

grimly fiendish, Friday, 19 October 2007 07:52 (eighteen years ago)

i will be there at 6pm.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 19 October 2007 07:53 (eighteen years ago)

I said it's fine. I haven't been to Mono in ages anyhow. Anyway, any pub is basically OK with the right people in it.

ailsa, Friday, 19 October 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)

THIS IS NOT HELPING US REACH CONSENSUS.

BAR 91?

grimly fiendish, Friday, 19 October 2007 12:00 (eighteen years ago)

It's not a Glasgow FAP thread if there's consensus, FFS.

ailsa, Friday, 19 October 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)

i know. but a man can dream.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 19 October 2007 12:05 (eighteen years ago)

"to dream the impossible dream" :-)

ailsa, Friday, 19 October 2007 12:06 (eighteen years ago)

hahahahahah :)

hmm, wonder if they'll play that? wow.

anyway. my quest tomorrow will be to drink beer and i think bar 91 should be the place, yo.

grimly fiendish, Friday, 19 October 2007 12:10 (eighteen years ago)

hmm, wonder if they'll play that? wow.

I can answer this if you want spoilers?

energy flash gordon, Friday, 19 October 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

anyway someone text a definite time and location to 07942691272 sometime! where is Bar 91?

energy flash gordon, Friday, 19 October 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yes! I mean no! I...oh, go on then.

Dude, don't put your phone number on the internets (though guess grimly can use his modding powers to take it back down).

Bar 91 is on Candleriggs in the Merchant City, quite near the Barrowlands. Though Andrew has just thrown up the possibility of the 13th Note since he has friends playing there. OH NOES WHAT TO DO.

ailsa, Friday, 19 October 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

The number's only relevant for the three weeks I'm in the UK, I'm not mega-panicked.

YES THEY WILL (one of three covers in the Glasgow set, you can probably guess the other two)

energy flash gordon, Friday, 19 October 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

EXCITED!!
