I used to like Jae's for sushi; I haven't been there since they moved onto Boylston St. Cafe Sushi on Mass Ave between Harvard and Central isn't particularly fancy but does good sushi, plus in town you've go Guyahama on Boylston St. and Ginza and Apollo in Chinatown.

I passed this on to Dan, who laughed long and loud and clear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 April 2006 11:28 (twenty years ago)

Hi Ned! Scott & Maria and I are on Martha's Vineyard, an easy bus-and-boat connection from Boston! You and Dan and all the rest of the Boston ILXors should come down next week, after our weekend guests leave! Plenty o' room for FAP MV.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 20 April 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Aw, I would love it! But alas, there is no time -- I fly back out Monday afternoon, the day after Terrastock. Another time, hopefully!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 20 April 2006 11:57 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely!

TWIN CITY DONUTS

is this a boston franchise?!? 'cause i've seen them in NYC and philadelphia. and it seems like a down-market version of dunkin donuts (which i always thought was a boston franchise).

Dear Bostonians,

I will be in your area Nov. 7-10, and in Cambridge during the day on the 7th. Let's meet-up!

Sincerely,
Youn

So... are there exciting festivals etc in Boston in the summer (July-September)? So far I have discovered the jazz festival in late September, and the Tanglewood classical festival which appears to be really quite far from Boston. Surely there must be some pop/rock/electronic stuff?

toby, Sunday, 20 April 2008 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

you can take a bus to/from Tanglewood

gabbneb, Sunday, 20 April 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

But the answer's basically no, afaik. You want folk/roots music-type stuff, there's a decent amount of that nearby, but no Glasto-type events. Most of your big festivals exist in places where there are fewer big cities - everyone comes here anyway - and to the extent you find them on the East Coast, they're usually gonna be more central, i.e. between NY and DC.

gabbneb, Sunday, 20 April 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

if you're just looking for (semi-)outdoor concerts, and maybe this is obv, there's the Tweeter Center in Mansfield, plus the South Shore Music Circus and Cape Cod Melody Tent

gabbneb, Sunday, 20 April 2008 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

There's definitely a growing electronic scene if you are into house/techno/nu-rave stuff. I think there was a small indie-pop festival last year too.

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 20 April 2008 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for the info - I didn't expect that there would be anything much, but then I hadn't known about Pitchfork/Lollapalooza before moving to Chicago, so you never know...

Electronic - I am definitely into my mnml etc. Are there particular places/websites/whatever to find out about stuff going on?

toby, Sunday, 20 April 2008 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Not necessarily the type of festival you're talking about, but there's the Boston Early Music Festival:

http://www.bemf.org/

There's also the Boston Folk Festival:

http://www.bostonfolkfestival.org/

HI DERE, Sunday, 20 April 2008 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

T - I don't know about festivals (were actually contemplating going to Chicago for Lollapalooza but then realized how $ it would be) really but there are a lot of good shows coming up. We have tickets for six shows in may already.

Unfortunately I don't think there's a single Boston gig website. I usually just check the websites of realiable venues.

www.mideastclub.com
www.thedise.com
http://www.ttthebears.com/

I also use livenation.com pretty often.

Hope that helps some.

electronic stuff -

the little light bulbs in the shapes of "8"s from which you can make any number.

These are called 7-segment displays. Not as cool as Nixie tubes or Numitrons, but still cool.

that's the overzealous nature of boston sport fans though. wallow uncontrollably and/or boast proudly.

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 16:18 (seventeen years ago)

I KNOW that is the thing about this story that is utterly ridiculous. how does it take 17 hours to catch a dog?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 28 October 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

You have to remember that the Curt Schilling body shape is relatively prevalent here, only without the attendant Professional Athlete caveat.

Staying in Peabody this weekend - hotel rates went nuts thanks to the game, I guess. So we're spending one day in Salem, etc. and then Saturday around Boston for the game.

A former local recommended Legal Sea Foods, which appears to have a place near the hotel - is it worth going there for dinner?

ice cr?m paint job (milo z), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 05:35 (sixteen years ago)

Legal is fine (been a couple times) but I'm not a seafood expert by any means.

Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 23:26 (sixteen years ago)

Legal is basically "Old Reliable"; it's a chain, but it's a chain with really good food (plus every restaurant is styled differently, making it seem less chain-like).

I just discovered a pretty decent Mexican place right next to Fenway called La Verdad which has very good drinks and very good guacamole.
