I also seem to have missed where "killing civilians" is bothersome to the American military.

louise ck (milo z), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 08:19 (eight years ago)

Veterans voted for Trump by 2:1 or something, so not all of them are assholes but as a whole they're a very conservative group and I have my serious doubts that more than a relative handful would support Manning or anyone like Manning.

while my dirk gently weeps (symsymsym), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 08:35 (eight years ago)

people were spitting on returning veterans, this was a common thing during protests at the time.

lol no

Millennial Whoop, wanna fight about it? (Phil D.), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 14:34 (eight years ago)

that jordan peterson thing is great
the show is SO GOOD when it's dunking on right wing dickheads

bhad and bhabie (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 15:17 (eight years ago)

guys come on some vets probably got spit on even if a thorough NYT investigation couldn't find any photographic evidence of it, god knows hippies got spit on by the straights too, that doesn't mean All The Hardhat Urban Legends Are True & that there were spit-gauntlets at SFO, there's a middle ground here

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 15:30 (eight years ago)

Sounds like something that started out as figurative language- "longhaired war protestors are 'spitting on' brave soldiers and veterans"- became accepted as a literal thing, "longhaired war protestors are spitting on brave soldiers and veterans" after the people using such language were not exactly scrupulous about clarifying that they were speaking figuratively.

Obviously a hugely useful myth if you want to drive an atmosphere of military worship and make anti-war positions look vaguely discreditable. Cos no-one likes spitting, right?

But doctor, I am Camille Paglia (Bananaman Begins), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 16:31 (eight years ago)

Virgil was great in the shutdown ep. He often coasts through shows so it was good to hear him bring it.

JLB Credit (Jack BS), Thursday, 25 January 2018 14:05 (eight years ago)

the thing with virgil is he's not funny but he's good when it comes to wonk shit. he should really just be their policy wonk correspondent, or something.

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 14:07 (eight years ago)

Was that the ep with only three of them? When it's a full house- or even worse, plus a guest!- he just gets talked over because the others are loudmouths and he isn't. Not surprised he gives up most episodes and watches football streams instead.

But doctor, I am Camille Paglia (Bananaman Begins), Thursday, 25 January 2018 14:12 (eight years ago)

the thing with virgil is he's not funny

virgil can be really dryly funny imo, but i appreciate he's kinda hamstrung by having the nerdiest-sounding voice out of a team comprised entirely of different strains of nerd voice

your skeleton is ready to hatch (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 25 January 2018 14:17 (eight years ago)

imo he's better suited to writing

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 14:18 (eight years ago)

amber is def the worst chapo though, this is canon now

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 14:21 (eight years ago)

felix was really good on chelsea manning in the most recent ep #teamfelix

your skeleton is ready to hatch (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 25 January 2018 14:23 (eight years ago)

I agree. I was concerned cause the events were so fresh but it was really the most considered take I'd heard up to that point

Simon H., Thursday, 25 January 2018 14:35 (eight years ago)

would listen to a wonk chapo pod with bruenig, virgil, tim tbh

flopson, Friday, 26 January 2018 00:14 (eight years ago)

They announced some live West Coast shows.

$25 +s/c for the Portland show, and amusingly enough the same that Slate’s Cultural Gabfest is in town

Crazy Display Name Haver (kingfish), Friday, 26 January 2018 00:34 (eight years ago)

whenever a podcast comes to town I always notice they've crazy overpriced

Simon H., Friday, 26 January 2018 01:45 (eight years ago)

ps matt you didn't need to spend a full hour to get to your "can of pringles" metaphor lol

Simon H., Friday, 26 January 2018 14:24 (eight years ago)

Loved that one. Came pretty close to laying out the historical foundation of Christmanist pessimism.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Friday, 26 January 2018 15:07 (eight years ago)

So how did Adam Friedland end up on Israeli TV anyway? He came across fairly well also somehow

global tetrahedron, Friday, 26 January 2018 17:23 (eight years ago)

where's the tour dates at?

adam friedland on israeli tv was hilarious. "comedian and activist". i think he went to one DSA meeting or something haha.

khat person (jim in vancouver), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:28 (eight years ago)

I haven’t found a collected listing yet. Some events are on Ticketmaster, some on Ticketfly

Crazy Display Name Haver (kingfish), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:59 (eight years ago)

oh i just had a little google - also can't find collected dates - but found what i need to know: that they're doing seattle on march 30th. might catch the show, I'm overdue a seattle visit in any case

khat person (jim in vancouver), Friday, 26 January 2018 18:12 (eight years ago)

the irony of conservative owned crocodile in seattle presenting the chapo show in town

barreras, Friday, 26 January 2018 18:18 (eight years ago)

Their tour will probably be run about as well as their merch efforts, and similarly overcharged.

Crazy Display Name Haver (kingfish), Friday, 26 January 2018 18:48 (eight years ago)

buying merch of a podcast just doesn't compute for me

khat person (jim in vancouver), Friday, 26 January 2018 18:49 (eight years ago)

chapo brand maximization is sort of offputting.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Friday, 26 January 2018 18:50 (eight years ago)

like I can't fault them for the fact that people keep throwing money at them for the podcast itself, but the book, shirts etc just feel crass

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Friday, 26 January 2018 18:51 (eight years ago)

podcast merch is cool if you wanna look like the biggest fuckin loser

bhad and bhabie (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 26 January 2018 18:52 (eight years ago)

enh, I'd cash in too, it's not like any aspect of their enterprise is built to last

Simon H., Friday, 26 January 2018 18:52 (eight years ago)

I agree that podcast merch is dumb though

Simon H., Friday, 26 January 2018 18:52 (eight years ago)

yeah, I guess I can see wanting to build a nest-egg off it, none of them are probably destined to springboard to greater stardom, will probably just fizzle out in a few years and then maybe they do some journalism/writing.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Friday, 26 January 2018 19:23 (eight years ago)

hey now i like my uhh yeah dude t

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Friday, 26 January 2018 20:11 (eight years ago)

khat person (jim in vancouver), Friday, 26 January 2018 20:29 (eight years ago)

I have many issues with chapo but them selling t’s isn’t one of them. did they make a fugazi style anti merch pronouncement?

barreras, Friday, 26 January 2018 20:46 (eight years ago)

enh most of the people making a thing about it are the "oh so you're a socialist? seems like you USE CASH DOLLARS a lot" crowd, I assume

Simon H., Friday, 26 January 2018 20:48 (eight years ago)

The careerist/cash-in moves are amusing, not for any political reason but just because they were all about making fun of the way other podcasts have run (stamps.com ads, etc.).

louise ck (milo z), Friday, 26 January 2018 21:40 (eight years ago)

Not the Chapos so much as other left twitter/Jacobin writer types but there are reminders that left-wing media people are still fundamentally media people with the need for attention/audience and career goals that entails.

louise ck (milo z), Friday, 26 January 2018 21:41 (eight years ago)

This show would be a rare case where a book is entirely consistent both with the subject matter and backgrounds of the hosts.

Crazy Display Name Haver (kingfish), Friday, 26 January 2018 23:10 (eight years ago)

Street Fight Radio sells a (hardcopy) zine

Crazy Display Name Haver (kingfish), Friday, 26 January 2018 23:11 (eight years ago)

Podcast merch is an industry now:

The Great Gaming Debate is finally online:

http://podcast.no-cartridge.net/?name=2018-01-29_nocartridge0064.mp3

(It’s almost 2.5 hrs long)

Crazy Display Name Haver (kingfish), Monday, 29 January 2018 22:40 (eight years ago)

ah my two least favourite chapo hosts debate the merit of gaming for 2 and a half hours.

khat person (jim in vancouver), Monday, 29 January 2018 22:48 (eight years ago)

you can't hate christman and claim to like chapo imo

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Monday, 29 January 2018 23:19 (eight years ago)

i'd accept any of the others (although it's actually hard to imagine finding will objectionable)

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Monday, 29 January 2018 23:20 (eight years ago)

Will’s borderline mid-Atlantic/Manhattanite accent (“rather”) can be seen as quite objectionable

Crazy Display Name Haver (kingfish), Monday, 29 January 2018 23:45 (eight years ago)

bring Brendan back imo
