The kid playing Chekov seemed very annoying, but that wasn't a major problem.
― Hatfail of Hollow (Nicole), Monday, 18 May 2009 15:47 (seventeen years ago)
He was supposed to be chirpily annoying, though. Classic 17-year-old.
― Ned Raggett, Monday, 18 May 2009 15:48 (seventeen years ago)
Chekov's pretty annoying in the original series tbh
― High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 18 May 2009 15:58 (seventeen years ago)
vhat is zis Monkees bandvagon onto vhich I am jumpink?
yeah, chekov is easily the worst of the original cast. which is basically flawless besides him.
seems like a nice dude irl, tho.
― original bgm, Monday, 18 May 2009 16:32 (seventeen years ago)
walter koenig, that is.
― original bgm, Monday, 18 May 2009 16:33 (seventeen years ago)
"yeah, chekov is easily the worst of the original cast. which is basically flawless besides him."
Wha? Why the chekov hate?
― Philip Nunez, Monday, 18 May 2009 17:59 (seventeen years ago)
I dug Chekov in the movies, don't really remember him in the series.

BOTANY BAY
― s1ocki, Monday, 18 May 2009 18:05 (seventeen years ago)
haha, chekov is pretty funny in khan, yeah.
http://bensbreakfastblog.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/chekov-ear.jpg
I guess I don't hate him or anything but I'd rather just rather have sulu in all of his scenes instead. if memory serves, sulu missed most of season 2 because he went off to film a movie or something that nobody remembers. so, chekov got all of those parts.
― original bgm, Monday, 18 May 2009 19:17 (seventeen years ago)
chekov's just kinda the least interesting of the supporting crew - he doesn't have any goofy specialty or defining characteristics apart from the "novelty" of being Russian. And having a Beatles haircut.
― High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 18 May 2009 19:38 (seventeen years ago)
You want him to have more hobbies, like drinking or something?
― Philip Nunez, Monday, 18 May 2009 20:06 (seventeen years ago)
lolz I dunno he's not a terrible character or anything he's just not very interesting, he's the least fully fleshed out of the supporting crew
― High in Openness (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 18 May 2009 20:09 (seventeen years ago)
sure, why not
― kingfish, Monday, 18 May 2009 20:10 (seventeen years ago)
The only "fleshing out" of the support crew is, as far as I can remember:
Scotty likes to read tech manualsUhura likes singingSulu likes guns & fencing
Not too much meat for these dudes either.
― Philip Nunez, Monday, 18 May 2009 20:17 (seventeen years ago)
sulu missed most of season 2 because he went off to film a movie
hmmm, not "most" I don't think. he was in The Green Berets w/ John Wayne!
― Dr Morbius, Monday, 18 May 2009 20:26 (seventeen years ago)
ha! I stand corrected!
― original bgm, Monday, 18 May 2009 21:21 (seventeen years ago)
xposts: now way can you hate on Pavel Chekhov! The man is ballast. Earnest, duty-bound ballast. It's nice to have a character who doesn't always know exactly what's going on, who can sub in for the audience somewhat. I love him.
― VegemiteGrrrl, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 02:46 (seventeen years ago)
ok
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 14:48 (seventeen years ago)
I thought the new Chekov was pretty cool.
― Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 14:51 (seventeen years ago)
Also about complaining about sound in space movies; they didn't stop it 50 years ago, i don't think they're going to stop just yet.
― Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 14:53 (seventeen years ago)
ok - about the Romulans. if the star right next to your home planet is about to go supernova - would you not, i dunno, maybe evacuate some people somewhere safe? i know Spock is awesome and all and was on his way with some red goo to save the day - but really? everyone just hung around waiting for either Spock or death?
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 14:54 (seventeen years ago)
Well, they're all 90s tribal tats and piercings, it's not like they have common sense.
― Hatfail of Hollow (Nicole), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 14:56 (seventeen years ago)
also: why is a mining ship so heavily armed?
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 14:58 (seventeen years ago)
xpost - ha ha - true. i bet they enjoy listening to the Spin Doctors too.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 15:00 (seventeen years ago)
They think Trent Reznor is really deep.
― Hatfail of Hollow (Nicole), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 15:20 (seventeen years ago)
so whoever said this was good fanfic was totally otm. i loved the casting, i loved the lens flare, i loved how they split the difference by getting as many dork in-joeks in as they could while also gleefully destroying the timeline. fuck "continuity" and all that fanboy bullshit. it was funny and exciting and basically non-dickish throughout.
still suffered from bad fast action cutting and lazy plotting but who actually cares? this movie is abt doing some fun stuff with some beloved, well-worn characters in a way that non-fans and fans who aren't retarded can enjoy.
also imo dude playin kirk stole the movie, i thought he was hilarious and awesome.

in the last scene, he totally turned on this shatner delivery and stride all of a sudden
― blair underwood: "man up" (omar little), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 16:58 (seventeen years ago)
yeah since the entire movie was about dorkin out at that point i loved it.
― Is because I think a lot of the music you like is flowery? (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:00 (seventeen years ago)
oh also forget to mention that eric bana sucked but that shouldn't be a shocka
― Is because I think a lot of the music you like is flowery? (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:01 (seventeen years ago)
watching khan again last night - which is by far not a perfect movie - reminded me of how much this movie needed a good villain.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:02 (seventeen years ago)
i don't think eric bana was bad at all, the character he played just happened to be run-of-the-mill
― blair underwood: "man up" (omar little), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:03 (seventeen years ago)
Will this wind up being the highest-grossing Star Trek movie of all time? Seems likely to me.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:04 (seventeen years ago)
i think it already is, actually!
― blair underwood: "man up" (omar little), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:05 (seventeen years ago)
I can't even remember who the villains were for I, III, or IV. Did they have villains?
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:07 (seventeen years ago)
3 was Christopher Lloyd the Klingon. I and IV didn't have villains other than environmental catastrophe.
― Adam Bruneau, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:08 (seventeen years ago)
the villains was US.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:10 (seventeen years ago)
Oh right, Christopher Lloyd. He was a big step down after Montalban.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:10 (seventeen years ago)
so otm. The best villains were all total hams and really helped hold the movies together - Montalban in Khan, Lloyd in III, Plummer in VI. yeah there is no real villain in IV (still a pretty good one). TMP is basically just eye candy, no villain required.
― Tennis Bum (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:10 (seventeen years ago)
I think the borg lady from VIII was pretty good, and malcolm mcd had his moments in VII.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:12 (seventeen years ago)
I will admit to kind of liking the religious nut in V even though that movie is terrible.
i want to see them MATCHING WITS. only thing bana had was a bigger ship.
― s1ocki, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:13 (seventeen years ago)
Borg queen was the best TNG movie villain by a long shot (why they never brought Q back instead, I dunno). McD movie is unwatchable.
― Tennis Bum (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:16 (seventeen years ago)
McD movie is unwatchable.
Movie, yes. McDowell himself could be a good villain in a better movie.
― Your heartbeat soun like sasquatch feet (polyphonic), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:17 (seventeen years ago)
one of the weird things that this movie implies in terms of continuity is that (in the "real" timeline) both Kirk and Spock die in mysterious space accidents. kinda weird.
― Tennis Bum (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:19 (seventeen years ago)
TMP is basically just eye candy, no villain required
I actually loved the concept and "villain" for TMP, the problem is more in the direction and execution of the film which just ruins the entire thing. The hashed-together script from Phase 1 parts doesn't help, either...
― Nhex, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:21 (seventeen years ago)
eh its just something nice to have on in the background, as an actual film it doesn't work at all
― Tennis Bum (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:22 (seventeen years ago)
'fuck "continuity" and all that fanboy bullshit.'
Huh? This movie was built whole-cloth out of fanboy bullshit. They even respect shitty Scott Bakula Enterprise continuity.
This is the dog that Scotty vaporized that caused his exile to Vulcan ice moon gulag:http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/342/porthosdog.jpg

xpost Shakey - But doesn't that (weird space accident deaths) feel somehow appropriate than being bested in battle for them?
― Nhex, Tuesday, 19 May 2009 17:23 (seventeen years ago)
yeah I suppose so it just seems like an odd coincidence (no one cares how Bones dies I guess)
