my gf got caught in it and had to keep checking stations to figure out what was/wasn't moving. i deleted twitter and i suspect not having a real-time MTA feed will be the only great loss

I skipped 3 Q trains at Atlantic because they were crammed, the 4th was still super full, must have been hellish for people who need to get to work on time

badg, Tuesday, 9 January 2018 17:17 (six years ago) link

i was wedged into a Q

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 9 January 2018 17:39 (six years ago) link

my commute only took 1.5 hours extra this morning

chinavision!, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 15:33 (six years ago) link

today the conductor apologized for the 3 train being crowded, which was nice, but on the other hand when the fuck isn't the 3 crowded during rush hour

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 15:48 (six years ago) link

our conductor walked the cars during one of our 20-minute periods that we spent between each station to apologize and check if everyone was feeling ok, and whenever we were in a station he made an announcement that amounted to 'get off this thing now while you've got the chance'

chinavision!, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 15:58 (six years ago) link

those words should be over the door of every car

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 16:03 (six years ago) link

I weighed my chances with the roads and rode to work today. Thankfully. I was extra cautious so it "only" took an hour which apparently is 40% of the time it would have taken on the MTA.

Conic section rebellion 44 (in orbit), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 16:05 (six years ago) link

Good call, I should have done the same

badg, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 16:11 (six years ago) link

nothin much wrong with the Q today, where did I go right?

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 16:18 (six years ago) link

unfortunately my commute doesn't really work with a car -- the only way to save time is to spend $20 on a cab down the west side highway to the 72nd st. stop, and that's only if traffic on the west side highway is actually moving

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 16:20 (six years ago) link

Is it wrong that the number one reason I am putting off going to NY and dealing with my apt is because of the subway situation? I read this thread and get anxious all over again.

Yerac, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 16:22 (six years ago) link

(and even that only saves you about 5 minutes, and that's assuming you get to the 72nd St. stop exactly when an express train arrives, so really, why bother)

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 16:23 (six years ago) link

that "visit door to door to show a human face of the MTA" tactic appears to be their new thing. it's nice enough but it's like the free wifi. please stop providing lace and doilies and fix the goddamn sewing machine

I've never seen it -- with the level of crowding on the subway I don't see how it's even possible

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 16:52 (six years ago) link

The traffic on West Street is greatly improved from the back of a motorcycle. Then it doesn't matter if traffic isn't moving.

Admittedly if I worked in Midtown it wouldn't make sense for me to ride, I guess. I mean it would still be more fun than the subway but it probably wouldn't be any faster.

that "visit door to door to show a human face of the MTA" tactic

The other morning I was feeling kind of rough and then I was held momentarily by the train's dispatcher. It was nice.

increasingly frequent novelty: two countdown clocks on the same platform displaying different information.

Newb Sybok (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 10 January 2018 19:05 (six years ago) link

i was under the impression that the countdown clocks got info from a bluetooth oriented doohickey at the front of the train so that it COULDN'T be wrong but yeah, they are continually fucking up somehow. magic!

I think the ones on the b division trains work with a different technology maybe... like I thought I read that it involved cameras actually identifying the trains in the tunnels instead of transponders on the trains themselves, and would thus be more prone to error.

but this was a while back and maybe they ended up using another method.

chinavision!, Wednesday, 10 January 2018 19:33 (six years ago) link

lol nevermind, you're exactly right about bluetooth: http://secondavenuesagas.com/2016/11/14/b-division-countdown-clocks-set-arrive-2018/

but it is a different system than on the a division

re the "power outages" and other lies/failures

All these different but equally damaging types of data manipulations — purposely fudging numbers versus collecting bad data by accident — combine to make New Yorkers distrust the MTA to inform us honestly about its functionality. Consider the most basic of questions: Is the subway getting better? The MTA and Cuomo have been arguing it is since September, but people who ride it find that hard to believe. As the transit authority invests hundreds of millions of dollars into triaging the failing subways, how will we know if this money is going to good use? What could the MTA possibly say that would make us trust it now?

MTA: construction is extremely expensive in NYC, the most expensive city in the world.

Also the MTA: we need temporary office space. Better blow up some earth and build it underground! pic.twitter.com/u9Gw8ovovG

Power outage at Queens Plaza?

Psmith, Pharmacist (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 13 February 2018 17:45 (six years ago) link

Some northbound F trains are stopping along the G line from Bergen St to Court Sq then via the E line to Jackson Hts-Roosevelt Av.

Some northbound F trains are stopping along the D line from Coney Island-Stillwell Av to W 4 St-Washington Sq.

Some southbound F trains will end at 2 Av.

These service changes are because of a dog on the tracks at York St.
