v v difficult to find a pic of Pola that gives an impression of what she looked like in motion. in stills she can look very masculine, absolutely not the case in her films:

there's this picture of hepburn by Horst back when she was just starting out and she's all curled up in a chair all legs and arms and looking very modern and sophisticated -- i only saw it once at a gallery in chelsea that was selling vintage prints for god-knows how many thousands of dollars and I haven't seen it since.

Maude Adams wasn't strictly a '20s/'30s actress (she was the first actress to play Peter Pan on Broadway in the '00s; she retired in the '10s to work for General Electric, teach drama, and generally have her shit together, but she briefly returned to stage acting in the early '30s), but this is too great a portrait not to share:
