A handful of critics seem to really like The Blackcoat's Daughter (directed by Oz Perkins, son of Anthony), but I found it alternately dull and yucky (but mostly dull).

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 18:21 (eight years ago)

blackcoat's daughter is terrrrrrrrrible i have no idea what people see in it

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 18:26 (eight years ago)

anyone watched Wormwood?

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 18:47 (eight years ago)

no, but I'm off tomorrow and was toying with seeing a noon arthouse showing.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 19:14 (eight years ago)

may watch on Netflix tonight

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 19 December 2017 21:09 (eight years ago)

I watched the first couple of installments - not yet convinced the diversion from Morris' usual style is particularly productive

have we just committed to misspelling 'detritus' in the subject of this thread for 13 years?

finlay (fionnland), Thursday, 21 December 2017 12:13 (eight years ago)

My group's finalists.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 December 2017 14:48 (eight years ago)

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Willem Dafoe – The Florida Project

You didn't make enough phone calls beforehand, evidently.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 December 2017 15:00 (eight years ago)

hey man I used up minutes getting Nixon in.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 21 December 2017 15:02 (eight years ago)

Barry Keoghan – The Killing of A Sacred Deer

ok, wasn't expecting that

i notice this year in pretty much ALL the groups and orgs, the best sctors and scripts ALL speak/are in English

didn't used to happen

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 21 December 2017 15:49 (eight years ago)

Since Bergman stopped making movies, more often than not tho.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 December 2017 16:09 (eight years ago)

As austerity politics has been tough to national film funding, a lot of international directors are making films in English as well. Lanthimos and Guadagnino and del Toro most conspicuously this year.

Frederik B, Thursday, 21 December 2017 16:18 (eight years ago)

Bilge Ebiri posits a #1 that not many have yet: https://www.villagevoice.com/2017/12/21/songs-from-a-sunken-place-the-best-films-of-2017/

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Thursday, 21 December 2017 17:19 (eight years ago)

I'd hoped that would be After the Storm, which is the best Kore-eda in ages. Really, really, good.

Frederik B, Thursday, 21 December 2017 17:37 (eight years ago)

I thought After the Storm was pleasant, but I struggle to think of anything remarkable about it. The few reviews I've read of it mirror your reaction far more than mine, though.

iCloudius (cryptosicko), Thursday, 21 December 2017 23:44 (eight years ago)

For me it's mostly that I thought Kore-eda had become too saccharine and slick on his latest films, but there's both some real darkness, and some unexpected filmic choices, in After the Storm. For instance the male lead is kinda too tall for a lot of the camera setups, which never failed to amuse me.

Frederik B, Friday, 22 December 2017 01:12 (eight years ago)

I can catch up on one of these three contenders today, which one do I go see?

Call Me By Your Name
Florida Project
Good Time

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 22 December 2017 12:01 (eight years ago)

The first and third.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 22 December 2017 12:20 (eight years ago)

I liked The Florida Project but I'd still agree with Alfred.

Alba, Friday, 22 December 2017 12:48 (eight years ago)

Oh, wait only one. That is hard! Good Time is a safer bet but I'd personally say CMBYN.

Alba, Friday, 22 December 2017 12:50 (eight years ago)

thanks guys CMBYN was lovely :)

Daniel_Rf, Friday, 22 December 2017 20:35 (eight years ago)

Wait till you see the lovelinesss of The Florida Project!

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 22 December 2017 20:48 (eight years ago)

We recognized the loveliness of The Florida Project after all. I didn't expect a Dunkirk win. I included my final ballot therein.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 December 2017 13:28 (eight years ago)

Lol. On the other hand, you're the only group to not choose Dafoe, no?

Frederik B, Sunday, 24 December 2017 13:31 (eight years ago)

I'd trade every Alison Janney in the world for one Dafoe.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 24 December 2017 13:41 (eight years ago)

Aw, why do you hate on Alison Janney, I like her :(

Frederik B, Sunday, 24 December 2017 14:17 (eight years ago)

*google's "I hate Alison Janney" as part of my research to uncover whether ILX is the one place on the internet where you can find people being mean about Alison Janney*

Alba, Monday, 25 December 2017 09:17 (eight years ago)

to me, her career highlight is being killed by a bus.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 25 December 2017 12:05 (eight years ago)

Happy Christmas to one and all!

Didn't the Observer lay him off midyear?

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 28 December 2017 20:31 (eight years ago)

Nah, they just gave him a long bathroom break.

Bilge Ebiri on overlooked actors

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:19 (eight years ago)

I had Adèle Haenel and Aubrey Plaza on two of my ballots. Agree about Sienna Miller (and had Charlie Hunnam on there too).

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:21 (eight years ago)

Haenel for BPM, that is.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:21 (eight years ago)

I've had Aubrey Plaza on ballots in the past for far worse movies, so it pains me to say I haven't seen Ingrid Goes West yet.

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Friday, 29 December 2017 15:31 (eight years ago)

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 January 2018 16:17 (eight years ago)

No Brigsby Bear on these lists is lame

mag gerwig! (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 18:10 (eight years ago)

Miami Film Awards went up.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 18:13 (eight years ago)

Nat'l Film Soc has theirs this weekend I think. So help me, if they pick The Shape of Water...
