Just got on Oxo Barista Brain coffee maker. Think I like it better than my Chemex. Going to try brewing some different blends over the weekend.

I’m at Intelligentsia in Silver Lake drinking a pourover.

xp

Good flavor, can pretty much replace the Chemex. Wish the carafe were bigger and could go in the dishwasher.

Moodles, Tuesday, 19 December 2017 18:59 (eight years ago)

los blue jeans, Friday, 22 December 2017 18:13 (eight years ago)

in vancouver a number of the coffee shops are ran by evangelicals including one of the larger local chains

khat person (jim in vancouver), Friday, 22 December 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)

including probably the two best third-wave coffee shops

khat person (jim in vancouver), Friday, 22 December 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)

bean around the world is popular/mainstream enough where all sorts of people go to them tho

infinity (∞), Friday, 22 December 2017 18:19 (eight years ago)

is bean around the world evangelical too? i was referring to jj bean

khat person (jim in vancouver), Friday, 22 December 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)

coffee def makes u closer to god

lag∞n, Friday, 22 December 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)

i worked at jj bean for about 8 months when i first moved to vancouver. they put on a really good christmas party for the staff with roast beef and chicken and all the fixings etc. and a few free drinks. so the owner goes up to do a speech and one of my colleagues said "he's going to cry, he cries every year while making the speech". and sure enough he did. he's also an extremely personable person irl who makes a point of knowing every member of staff's name and using it when he talks to them. evangelicals are weird.

khat person (jim in vancouver), Friday, 22 December 2017 18:28 (eight years ago)

cappu at the local
lots of staff turnover at this place

calstars, Friday, 22 December 2017 18:28 (eight years ago)

P sure? On the grand opening of the main st loc they huddled up and said a prayer

Not sure how hardcore they are abt it but this being vancouver its prob p watered down

infinity (∞), Friday, 22 December 2017 19:00 (eight years ago)

I shld say my bestfriend is a minister in vancouver and, totally no judgment, but there are a lot of personal-jesus types in the city cherry picking what to believe

there are a lot of different denominational churches in the city so this probably adds to it

infinity (∞), Friday, 22 December 2017 19:06 (eight years ago)

yeah there are lot of protestant churches which don't belong to any major international established denominations.

thread derail over: i just drank some decaf starbucks with some almond baileys in it like a normy

khat person (jim in vancouver), Friday, 22 December 2017 20:10 (eight years ago)

why not just pay for straight up flavored coffee

j., Friday, 22 December 2017 20:56 (eight years ago)

silly opinion. Colombia has the most reliably good mass-market coffee, and has some nice small-lot coffee too, and I've had really good coffees from Bolivia and Peru as well. Not a fan of Brazilian coffee though.

Fedora Dostoyevsky (man alive), Wednesday, 14 February 2018 22:40 (eight years ago)

otm. there's some good news out of Central America, too. Starbucks' Casi Cielo is p. reliably good morning coffee. In other news, an Intelligentsia opened up right near my house. It is nice to have a fancy coffee shop nearby, and the staff are knowledgable/friendly, but (a) why did they have to install modernist entirely minimalist furniture and (b) they don't heat up either their Chemex pots or the little pitchers into which they, like, decant the coffee, so that by the time the coffee makes it into your (also) unheated mug, it is just a degree over room temperature.

rb (soda), Wednesday, 14 February 2018 23:07 (eight years ago)

xp. mass-market coffee is no good

get on my level

khat person (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 14 February 2018 23:08 (eight years ago)

I've been out of Chemex filters and there's one coffee shop around here that has them so I've been using my old Aeropress. Getting dialed in pretty well w/ 18g coffee, 210-220g water @ 203 and two minutes inverted.

xp my aeropress also makes good coffee with water and coffee

Alderweireld Horses (darraghmac), Wednesday, 14 February 2018 23:30 (eight years ago)

I am trying to limit my coffee spending. I now keep three coffees in the house, but only one of them is fancy.

1) Cafe Bustelo for before work on the days I feel like using the Moka pot
2) Something good(ish) for the Chemex. I like Dave's Fresh Coffee from Rhode Island, and not only because the graphic design is swanky.
3) Decaf Illy from a little tin can that I make in the Aeropress
