It's the people who've watched A Quiet Passion that deserve an award.

What's this Nixon performance y'all keep going on about?

A Quiet Passion was the best film of 2016, but only award eligible this year.
― Frederik B, Monday, 4 December 2017 12:16 (eight years ago)
Oh I do love it when we talk release date eligibility.
― Alba, Monday, 4 December 2017 12:17 (eight years ago)
yes, Frederik doesn't get enough chances to be a supercilious dick.
The only rhythm of courtship that interests me is "Let's screw."

I watched _Girls Trip_ yesterday, Haddish is indeed infectious but man that movie sucks
― Simon H., Monday, 4 December 2017 18:35 (eight years ago)
I'd rather people see Girls Trip than Thor: Ragnarok.

Nick Schager's list has the honor of being called "wackjobby" by that scumshit Jeff Wells:

Didn't know Tony Perkins' son Osgood had made a horror feature (#9).

Nick's list is the running one he updates ever month or two. That's where he stood at the beginning of November.
Didn't know Tony Perkins had a son!

Tony Perkins had 2 sons with his wife Berry Berenson (sister of Marisa); she died on one of the 9/11 flights.
still think BPM is at the top of my list.

Just submitted a list today and starting to feel pretty awful that I haven't been able to snag a viewing of Phantom Thread yet.

I wondering, is The Square's absence from the Sight and Sound list because the critics didn't like it or because it hasn't been widely enough seen?
― Dan S, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 06:14 (eight years ago)
The former, surely, since you have Zama/ Western/Faces Places at 4,5 and 6.
― Susan Stranglehands (jed_), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 10:44 (eight years ago)
I guess people are pissed about Twin Peaks turning up on these lists
― Number None, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 11:03 (eight years ago)
Cahiers du Cinema: Split? A little confused, real sore thumb in that list.
Simon H: I'm amazed at the Mudbound hype too. Solid but not spectacular in any way, and had a couple really poor sequences. The cockpit scene should have just been edited out if they didn't have the budget - it took me right out of the film. Given the subject matter and the buzz, I expected more of an emotional kick.
Maybe the sound team should get a nomination though because lord did I grimace at the sound of the leg re-break. Ugh.
― finlay (fionnland), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 11:04 (eight years ago)
The Square hasn't yet been released in the UK, which might partly account for its absence from the S&S poll in particular. But it also isn't very good.
― Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 11:05 (eight years ago)
The editor wrote in Sight & Sound that they'd actively encouraged those polled this year to vote for any moving pictures, not just cinema, so I guess that boosted Twin Peaks. Lol at Cahiers stanning for Split. Is it because he's an auteur?
― Alba, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 12:30 (eight years ago)
Only one person in the printed edition gave Detroit a vote (haven't checked the online-only ballots). What a huge fall from grace. I thought it was terrific.
― Alba, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 12:33 (eight years ago)
& that Ang Lee film.
― Susan Stranglehands (jed_), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 12:38 (eight years ago)
people need to grow the fuck up
"Movie or TV?" issue came up when I tried to put Eastbound & Down on my 2009 Village Voice poll. Then and now I cite The Hoberman Rule. pic.twitter.com/a8nCamZvPi— BANDZ STACKHAGE (@NickPinkerton) December 5, 2017

When I see an Oliver Stone film that's not JFK on a list, I remember the Lord Sotosyn Rule.
― morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 13:24 (eight years ago)
Try the one right below that one on the list.
― Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 13:42 (eight years ago)
Marginally better than Split, but I can at least understand people hyping up Portman's overacting. I could have sworn that was a 2016 release anyway.
― finlay (fionnland), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 13:46 (eight years ago)
let's just leave release dates alone bcuz they always vary! no one seems to realize that New York is what counts
― ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 14:30 (eight years ago)
no one has had the opportunity to see the entirety of TP Season 3 in a cinemaaah, hence it doesn't qualify, case closed.
also J Hoberman loves Dogville and hates Abbott & Costello so fuck him forever
― ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 14:33 (eight years ago)
Not going to link the Broadcast Film Critics Awards nominations, because some things are even too shameful for the detrius thread.
― Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 16:51 (eight years ago)
Suffice it to say, they're betting the farm on The Shape of Water being the big Oscar winner this year. Because that's their entire reason for being.
NYT crix weigh in: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/06/movies/best-movies.html
