I mean, you could ask how a television show could have reruns in the era of on-demand television but it's the same thing: a lot of people consume the media as a chronological, episodic thing. So anyone not digging through a podcast backlog and just listening to this week's from a feed will get the reruns

imo it’s a reasonable question for digital media when scarcity is artificial and there’s no real difference quantitatively between grabbing this week’s episode and one from two years ago

The only one in my subscription that routinely does that is This American Life, but that's because it coincides with the NPR broadcast for a given week and they rerun old episodes sometimes. Reply All has been known to do it every once in a while too, but I think it's because their format is so single-serving. I mean, it would be weird if Five Thirty Eight had reruns, but it doesn't seem strange for Reply All to?

I hear quite a lot of podcast reruns on TAL and Planet Money. Sometimes it takes me a while to realise I've heard them before; sometimes I'm happy to be reminded.

the episode number is always a clear indicator in the TAL feed, and sometimes their "re-runs" are 60% new and updated material anyway

Oh yeah, I mean I almost always know they're reruns – I sometimes just don't know for a while whether they're reruns of episodes I've heard before or not.

I think the idea is that most people who listen to podcasts subscribe to them? So even if you don't have a new episode ready for this week you can dump an old one on the feed and get a certain number of downloads to justify your ad rates.

That's true to an extent, though there are a surprising number of podcast listeners who do not download or subscribe - they just Google and press "play" on the first page they get to
