This show has always felt too zeitgeisty (in it's own little way) to really endure for very long. Not sure I can really imagine them getting any more popular than they already are.

I do like what i've heard of champagne sharks

Simon H., Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:42 (eight years ago)

Their subscriber numbers are still going up. I’m curious what effect(if any) their book will have

Google Murray Blockchain (kingfish), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:50 (eight years ago)

I think it'll be a New Jersey, just like the Maddox book

flappy bird, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 19:52 (eight years ago)

brad and angelina's kid wrote a book?

hi i’m darren and i’m a bouncer from bendigo (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:00 (eight years ago)

Entirely probable, but a diff with the Maddox book is that Maddox wasn’t tied into a burgeoning book-heavy political movement or sharing a borough with 10,000 social media reporters & writers who they all share a social network with

But the book probably ain’t hitting till, when? Next summer, when all the 2018 campaigns will be in heavy news rotation?

Google Murray Blockchain (kingfish), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:03 (eight years ago)

idk, their subscriber numbers have plateaued a little in the past couple months, which was inevitable at some point. might be just a blip and not intended as a criticism fwiw; i don't know if anyone every expected them to reach anything near the level of popularity they have. they got at least 1000 new subscribers each month from january to september!

intheblanks, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:09 (eight years ago)

today's episode is pretty good fwiw

hi i’m darren and i’m a bouncer from bendigo (bizarro gazzara), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:09 (eight years ago)

xxp very good points, kingfish. maybe a more accurate comparison would be Jon Stewart/The Daily Show's 'America: the Book'?

flappy bird, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:12 (eight years ago)

also lol i love that they have matching adidas tracksuits now

flappy bird, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:13 (eight years ago)

Yesterday’s Champagne Sharks ep was a nice conversation with Jessa Crispin that will probably ruffle some feathers.

Google Murray Blockchain (kingfish), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:15 (eight years ago)

2 a week has been a good number to keep me from tuning out, but I didn't go backwards and binge once I started listening (circa NYer article) and I don't listen to anything else in the Chapo vein.

More serious lefty podcasts just end up gathering dust with the philosophy podcasts I'm subbed to - I'm listening while I drive while working, they're not very suitable in that environment.

louise ck (milo z), Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:19 (eight years ago)

maybe a more accurate comparison would be Jon Stewart/The Daily Show's 'America: the Book'?

To an extent, yes, but I think a difference here is that while the Daily Show book hit at the peak of their popularity/relevance in the ‘04 election, they were much more in a mass media form already, with millions of regular viewers, whereas this show has maybe 50-100k regular listeners in a far more (sub)niche venue

So who knows. Graphtreon will track it, same as they have so far.

I don't think Crispin's argument about the need for non-public (or less public) channels to deal with allegations is not that different from the pieces a few weeks about about formalizing the "whisper network". (I'm only 20 mins in so I don't know if there's more controversial stuff later)

Simon H., Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:51 (eight years ago)

*all that different

Simon H., Tuesday, 28 November 2017 20:51 (eight years ago)

also I understand the point of "popular contemporary feminists are only allowed to be Steinems, not Dworkins" but I'm uh also not sure that Lindy West fits neatly in with the criteria she lays out

Simon H., Tuesday, 28 November 2017 21:01 (eight years ago)

Really enjoying the Will/Amber/Matt ep

flappy bird, Tuesday, 28 November 2017 21:20 (eight years ago)

Yeah it seems like the best dynamic is either Will/Amber/Matt or Will/Matt/Felix. And tbh I don't really feel like Virgil Texas adds much to the show, he's just like a midpoint between Will and Matt or something.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 21:23 (eight years ago)

he's valuable as the data/polling wonk, otherwise he's just too "extremely online" for me, also a gamer

flappy bird, Wednesday, 29 November 2017 21:31 (eight years ago)

yeah his election breakdown recently was good

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 21:37 (eight years ago)

I would be totally okay with Felix and Virgil leaving the show tbh.

louise ck (milo z), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 22:25 (eight years ago)

I need to go back and find the Frost/Christman movie podcasts

louise ck (milo z), Wednesday, 29 November 2017 22:26 (eight years ago)

Amber > Felix > Matt > Will > Virgil

But I like them all

this was an interesting listen. i like this show and listen every week w CTH.

loved the Gorka stuff. hahaha that voice. didn't he say something about absconding in a hot air balloon at one point? very James Bond villain. they need to reference the Matt Lauer desk button next time.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 30 November 2017 01:17 (eight years ago)

AdomianGorka’s first appearance explicitly mentioned his resemblance to Hugo Drax, the dude from Moonraker.

Here's the absolutely insane gorka gun magazine interview they were talking about, for anyone who hadn't seen.

The second gorka call remains my favorite but they're all gold.

"Do you consider a surface level series of tattoos to be a 'deep tie' to an organization?"

these are good btw, i wish they’d done more

hi i’m darren and i’m a bouncer from bendigo (bizarro gazzara), Thursday, 30 November 2017 21:51 (eight years ago)

Likewise, I wish they do more book club eps. I enjoyed the one on Mark Fisher.

Google Murray Blockchain (kingfish), Thursday, 30 November 2017 22:31 (eight years ago)

what movies did they do? i remember when those dropped but never got around to them

flappy bird, Friday, 1 December 2017 02:46 (eight years ago)

A bunch. John Wayne's Genghis Khan flick, the Adam Sandler 9/11 movie, American Sniper, some Dinesh D'souza trash, Wonder Woman, Boss Baby(sorta)

Plus, the origin ep of the show was when the three of them were guests on Street Fight Radio to rip into that stupid Michael Bay Benghazi movie.

Oh wait, you mean Frost/Christman, not the regular show

Google Murray Blockchain (kingfish), Friday, 1 December 2017 04:24 (eight years ago)

Here are the F/C eps(I think)

Olympia, Legend of Curly's Gold, etc

Can’t think of another thread to post this in so enjoy this amusing bit on Lil’ Ben Shapiro

Ben Shapiro's debating skills boil down to relentlessly not shutting up and being 100% impervious to actually engaging with another person's points.

IF (Terrorist) Yes, Explain (man alive), Friday, 1 December 2017 07:16 (eight years ago)

He's a pretty good embodiment of why debate is stupid.

flappy bird, Friday, 1 December 2017 08:45 (eight years ago)

i hate "logic masters"

flappy bird, Friday, 1 December 2017 08:45 (eight years ago)

It doesn't help that the Internet in general and especially forums encourages nitpicking and one paragraph-at-most arguments - so any schmuck like Shapiro who has a forum to be longwinded can impress a lot of people.

louise ck (milo z), Friday, 1 December 2017 09:03 (eight years ago)

Not an argument

But doctor, I am Camille Paglia (Bananaman Begins), Friday, 1 December 2017 09:20 (eight years ago)

nice, premium ep just went up, their review of Justice League

flappy bird, Friday, 1 December 2017 18:15 (eight years ago)

awww yeahhhh

hi i’m darren and i’m a bouncer from bendigo (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 1 December 2017 18:16 (eight years ago)

Oh good, for a minute I was concerned they wouldn’t have Amber on.

Google Murray Blockchain (kingfish), Friday, 1 December 2017 19:42 (eight years ago)

lmao @ amber calling him "Hugh Jazzman"

flappy bird, Friday, 1 December 2017 19:49 (eight years ago)

ok the post-tax bill ep is one of their best. palpable rage and a thorough repudiation of the "waaah, dominance politics" crowd.

Simon H., Monday, 4 December 2017 13:28 (eight years ago)

I laughed at "You were friends with the Lindbergh baby!"

President Keyes, Monday, 4 December 2017 13:34 (eight years ago)

Felix went off in this episode

een, Monday, 4 December 2017 15:59 (eight years ago)

We don't appear to have a Patreon thread but it appears they done fucked up today.

louise ck (milo z), Friday, 8 December 2017 01:59 (eight years ago)

what, the price increase? or the lack of a new premium episode

flappy bird, Friday, 8 December 2017 02:15 (eight years ago)

Patreon's price increase

louise ck (milo z), Friday, 8 December 2017 02:25 (eight years ago)
