My parents decided to accept an invite they cannot safely drive to at the house of a distant aunt. I offered to drive, and they rejected the offer, miffed. Then, my sister and her kid and my wife and I told my parents that we would bring thanksgiving to them, and do all the cooking, cleaning, etc. Parents said sure, so we all uninvited myself from the distant aunt. Then, my sneaky parents reinvited themselves to the distant aunt, to which they will be driving.... but my sister and her kid and my wife I are now stuck w/o plans. Sister and I live fairly far apart, so we decided not to meet up. My wife and I are going out for seafood, because our oven is broken and we can’t cook at home. Happy fucking 2017.

I've been watching pies get made for six hours

Saturday: phoned Whole Foods to ask if their pre-order turkeys were frozen. was told they'd have a light layer of ice but not be frozen through. pre-ordered turkey.

Tuesday: picked up turkey.

Five minutes ago: tried to pull giblets out of turkey in order to brine it. Turkey is frozen solid in the middle. 16 ppl are meant to be eating this bird in 13 hours.

wait, only 15, there's a vegetarian attending. no worries then.

You need a bucket of really warm water and to wrap your turkey back up to be as watertight as possible. Then leave the wrapped bird in the bucket for a few hours, where it will thaw more quickly. Then remove the giblets and proceed to brine as normal.

Yes, the parks are open later and I suspect they'll have themed parades. We're at a cabin in Ft. Wilderness -- no park today.

The turkey has just gone into my oven. The neck and giblets are simmering to make stock for the gravy. My guests are due at 5pm. I haven't had this much "free" time for several weeks, and am not sure what to do with myself while dinner cooks.

Yesterday, I explained the ideas behind Thanksgiving to several of my friends here in Vietnam, because they were unfamiliar. But they all knew what Black Friday was already

we had fun. 20 people at our house. friends and family. it was nice. a baby. a dog. a 23 pound turkey. sambuca in my coffee.

Good meal all around and the turkey already fully broken down and turned into stock and soup and everything cleaned up and we’re chilling. That works!

The guests have gone, the leftovers are chilling in the fridge, and I'm hoping my overstuffed feeling will soon pass.
