Eh, I'm with the Redditors on that. This isn't something I'd ever play, but I'd be pretty unhappy if I paid 60 bucks for a game only to find out that parts of it are locked away like that.
I don't know if the game's marketing made a big deal out of these characters, but I suppose they kinda have to be, given the franchise.

I think I would mind less if you /couldn't/ pay your way out of it, but HAD to "achieve" it. (In fact, my most played game, The Binding of Isaac, has exactly such a system, though it's not a multiplayer game.)
The whole microtransaction thing doesn't make sense to me outside of games that are otherwise free to play.

yeah...but what about, for example, the final mission of grand theft auto, which is locked until you play for a few dozen hours and finally get to it?

Karl Malone, Monday, 13 November 2017 23:31 (eight years ago)

but at the same time, joining a game as a new player two weeks after release only to get instantly killed by weapons and characters you have no access to really feels like a scam

i agree that it sucks, but this is a very common scenario for new players playing online games. these days i kind of assume that when i first start playing i will just get murdered over and over again while i try to figure out how to equip pants or whatever. it's one of the reasons that online games usually really really suck (hot take) imo, unless you're 14 years old

Karl Malone, Monday, 13 November 2017 23:33 (eight years ago)

the 'getting slaughtered by high level players' thing could potentially be fixed by balancing the game, better player matching, etc.

but the 'parts of the game are locked until you play a ton' is a fundamental feature of videogames. it's just that there's now an option to skip past all that by paying cash, which is really lame, and in order to incentivize people to do it they made the unlockable content part of the game require even more effort to reach without by purely playing the game.

Karl Malone, Monday, 13 November 2017 23:37 (eight years ago)

that is fine, it’s the part where you can pay more money to instantly unlock shit, on a game that cost $60 - $80, is bad

either make it pay-to-play or just make me grind

Well, it's a single player game, so I think that's fundamentally different. The single player experience is in its nature an arc, while (most) multiplayer gaming is more about quicker variations and improvs on a familiar theme. In this Star Wars™ game, you're in theory meeting other players on the same "level" as you. I don't know enough about the game to know if these characters amount to much more than a different player model though. (And I do like the idea of having 15 Darth Vaders jumping around trying to choke one another!)

And I can't say I've seen single player games allowing you to pay to skip ahead. That would strike me as pretty gross, too. The adventure game genre had something kinda in line with this, like the Sierra Entertainment tips hotline. Some of those games had some insane puzzles that led people to suspect they were trying to force them to use the hotline.

I'm not 100% against all sorts of additional costs though. I bought the DLC for XCOM, for instance. The original game felt like a complete experience on its own, while the DLC was a significant addition to it.

I once wrote a letter to FTL Games to find out how to get past a difficult bit in Dungeon Master

all it cost me was the postage :)

Number None, Tuesday, 14 November 2017 00:16 (eight years ago)

I understand why it's bad in theory but basically the only thing I could have to balance the scales against the child who plays COD 8 hours a day is some expendable income so if I could buy my way to better weapons I'd be seriously tempted.

I've long wished for old people FPS servers - if you log in more than two hours a week you have to go to the regular servers.

multiplayer should ideally be a sandbox with the same rules and abilities available to all players. but people will become angry anyway if you use certain overpowered or uncouth items which are available to all players. maybe this is a way to include such items while adding an extra layer of visible and agreed upon shame.

there should probably be an extra shame note when you use an item purchased with your mom or dad's credit card

Pretty sure that's a parody. Regardless, it's prime /r/iamverysmart material, though they should probably retire that subreddit altogether in light of Trump's latest tweets.

I have a customer who averages 2-3 $400+ statues per month in special orders. He's all over the place from superhero comics to Prometheus merch (with a special emphasis on large-breasted anime statues). I can't grasp being able to afford that (even with the 20% off I give him) but I really can't grasp having the room to put them all.

I have the theory that consumer impulse purchases and entire production chains created for Funko Pops are propping up the world economy

mh, Thursday, 18 January 2018 21:47 (eight years ago)

at the very least, it's a chain of purchases and production that encompasses more real world capital that bitcoin

mh, Thursday, 18 January 2018 21:49 (eight years ago)

that's crazy. bitcoin has loads of real world capital it's just all black market.

A few years ago I bought one because they had released a Big Trouble in Little China set. It was me and my wife's favorite movie and I wanted to pick her up the Gracie Law one. So I walked up to my local comic shop and asked "so where are the Big Trouble in Little China bobbleheads?" And the guy said, nicely but still as a corrective, "they're not bobbleheads, they're Funko POP!" And right then and there I decided I was just gonna get that one.
