and then the crushing moment (which so many of us recognise) when they were relegated from subject to object, the humiliation of wondering why they had ever thought they might be of intellectual interest to him, or amusing, or seen as an equal,

i've been thinking stuff like this a lot lately. it's crushing. i don't want to talk to any people, really. i'm not even reading the apology because i've run out of care, but i love estela.

assawoman bay (harbl), Saturday, 11 November 2017 00:25 (eight years ago)

haha didn't even notice i copied her word, crushing

assawoman bay (harbl), Saturday, 11 November 2017 00:25 (eight years ago)

Don’t read the apology; it will make you want to puke.

horseshoe, Saturday, 11 November 2017 00:57 (eight years ago)

yeah these statements are always so repulsive and obviously disingenuous and at their worst abusive. i mean, "i choose to live now as a gay man" has become the new "my dog ate my homework," you know?

flappy bird, Saturday, 11 November 2017 01:00 (eight years ago)

really? as of yet only one person has employed it

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 11 November 2017 01:23 (eight years ago)

still amazed by "i also took advantage of the fact that i was widely admired"

omar little, Saturday, 11 November 2017 01:29 (eight years ago)

xp i mean as a punchline, a lame excuse, perhaps this joke is exclusive to twitter

flappy bird, Saturday, 11 November 2017 01:32 (eight years ago)

still amazed by "i also took advantage of the fact that i was widely admired"

wait Louis said this? in his apology statement?? maybe i should read it... sounds insane

flappy bird, Saturday, 11 November 2017 01:32 (eight years ago)

well isn't that the crux of it?

ur-oik (rip van wanko), Saturday, 11 November 2017 01:36 (eight years ago)

idk haven't read it

Matt Zoller Seitz saw I Love You, Daddy two weeks ago and compared it to a flasher in a raincoat. I think he nailed it:

If there's one thing we know for sure about people who are accused of indecent exposure, it's that the thrill of getting away with it is the true source of their pleasure. This is the movie version of a pervert in a raincoat flashing you, deftly enough that you aren't sure you saw what you saw. In retrospect, much of "Louie" now plays like a dry run for what he'd do on the big screen with "I Love You, Daddy," which leaves the raincoat open while its owner makes eye contact and dares you to deny what's happening. My notes consist of a single sentence: "It's like he's rubbing it in our faces."

One of my Letterboxd friends gave it 4 stars out of 5.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 11 November 2017 01:54 (eight years ago)

I actually think it's too bad that people may not end up having the option to see ILYD cause I think its particular form of hypocrisy is actually pretty interesting

Simon H., Saturday, 11 November 2017 02:29 (eight years ago)

idk, we always talk about how harassment and sexism is a men's issue and I think part of that should entail looking at failed attempts to wrestle with these issues

Simon H., Saturday, 11 November 2017 02:31 (eight years ago)

I think the cancellation of its release virtually guarantees that the movie will be seen that way by the few people that see it, because they'll have to actively seek it out.

flappy bird, Saturday, 11 November 2017 02:38 (eight years ago)

Wait for the Criterion version.

dinnerboat, Saturday, 11 November 2017 02:40 (eight years ago)

lol, I was just going to make a Heaven's Gate comparison

flappy bird, Saturday, 11 November 2017 02:41 (eight years ago)

which, itt, would've been very rude to Heaven's Gate and Michael Cimino

flappy bird, Saturday, 11 November 2017 02:42 (eight years ago)

I could see CK's film quietly slipping out on a streaming service within the next year.

to fly across the city and find Aerosmith's car (C. Grisso/McCain), Saturday, 11 November 2017 02:55 (eight years ago)

not too many stakeholders given it's self funded; he might well decide it's better off not out there

then again I just saw that physical screeners got sent out (presumably right before the story broke) so

Simon H., Saturday, 11 November 2017 03:10 (eight years ago)

i searched the pirate bay for i love you, daddy. i now regret that decision

ur-oik (rip van wanko), Saturday, 11 November 2017 03:46 (eight years ago)

the fbi has a tracker open just to watch for people like you

j., Saturday, 11 November 2017 03:52 (eight years ago)

Seeing now that Louie is gone from Netflix. Was going to watch Late Show one more time before...

Mhm Female (Eazy), Saturday, 11 November 2017 05:15 (eight years ago)

because of you

ur-oik (rip van wanko), Saturday, 11 November 2017 05:28 (eight years ago)

I have to think celebrities are going to keep spontaneously com-busting like this in public for a good while. It's like when you take the tap off a sewer line, the stench just keeps rising and I got to figure there might be a nigh on endless supply in entertainment, sports, business and politics of people doing bad things behind the curtain to avail.

earlnash, Saturday, 11 November 2017 05:40 (eight years ago)

let me get this straight, louis found space in his statement to apologise to.... dave becky???

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 11 November 2017 09:23 (eight years ago)

New Yorker review, similar to the Ebert one.

... (Eazy), Saturday, 11 November 2017 16:03 (eight years ago)

The film, which centers on the sexual machinations of powerful men, reeks of impunity. Like so many of Louis’s standup jokes that purport to skewer the grossness of men, it could only have been made by a person confident that he would never have to answer for the repulsive things he’s long been rumored to have done, let alone be caught—if I may borrow a choice word from the recently disgraced Leon Wieseltier—in a major moment of public “reckoning.”

... (Eazy), Saturday, 11 November 2017 16:04 (eight years ago)

oooof

China’s fate echoes an intention that Louis has often expressed regarding his own daughters: to cure them of the spoiled upbringing he has given them by refusing them any money when they come of age. He wants them to work for a living, just like he has. Like so many Fathers of Daughters, I guess, he’s counting on them not running into dudes like him on the job.

drinkmaster sealcup at yr service (bizarro gazzara), Saturday, 11 November 2017 17:16 (eight years ago)

lolol i was just wondering to myself if he/his show was the first prominent Father of Daughters

i disagree entirely. imo watching a movie where a serial predator entirely avoids facing the irl issue in favor of a fictional portrayal is not an attempt to "wrestle with these issues" it's the complete opposite. what we are doing now, discussing this career fallout, this is addressing the issue, head-on. tho i dunno maybe if you watch this movie with enough nodding and chin stroking you magically unlock the answer.

fwiw i don't find it interesting at all. it's not even novel, this shit happens everywhere in every industry. this is a symptom of the sickness of patriarchy. just because this guy tells jokes and does it with the trappings of art (black and white! new york city! jazz soundtrack!) doesn't make this meaningful in any way.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 11 November 2017 17:47 (eight years ago)

oh no, people aren't going to see the inner workings of this brilliant guy who had a career basically indulging his every whim, what a loss to culture

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 11 November 2017 17:48 (eight years ago)

also the more i think about his bullshit apology the more i dislike it. he spends more time patting himself on the back for being admirable and powerful than anything. also im not sure i believe his accounts that yeah it was all cool and consensual cos the mf has been straight up lying about this for years why tf would he be telling the truth now?

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 11 November 2017 17:50 (eight years ago)

I don't think things need to be defensible to be interesting or to reflect something about the moment in which they were produced, and I don't think CK's issues are restricted just to him

Simon H., Saturday, 11 November 2017 18:03 (eight years ago)

" also im not sure i believe his accounts that yeah it was all cool and consensual" did he say that?

akm, Saturday, 11 November 2017 18:14 (eight years ago)

He has finally stated that (rough paraphrase) he had maybe convinced himself at the time that it was consensual, because of the power differential, etc, he knows now it wasn't. The statement in pitchfork is the most complete I've read (linked above, I think).

nickn, Saturday, 11 November 2017 18:56 (eight years ago)

if he/his show was the first prominent Father of Daughters

the staple plot of Father Knows Best (late 50s?) was daddy giving guidance to his "princess"

A is for (Aimless), Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:01 (eight years ago)

i have watched Father Knows Best and I don't think the two shows are comparable, nor are the portrayals of fatherhood.

this is a symptom of the sickness of patriarchy. just because this guy tells jokes and does it with the trappings of art (black and white! new york city! jazz soundtrack!) doesn't make this meaningful in any way.
so otm

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:19 (eight years ago)

so many ways to be creative and express difficult ideas -- and I Love You Daddy is what he chose
yikes

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:21 (eight years ago)

xp - not very comparable in terms of portrayal, sure, but FKB qualifies as "prominent" and was very heavy on the Father of Daughter element, so it does meet the only two criteria mentioned.

A is for (Aimless), Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:24 (eight years ago)

I cannot believe I am typing all this out but here goes: FKB was about his whole family. There were episodes about everyone. Like The Cosby Show or zillions of other family sitcoms. Louie (from what I remember of it) is all about Louie. His daughters come and go, in his life to stress him out and give him a way to experience human feelings. That's not the same as a family sitcom aside from him having daughters.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:30 (eight years ago)

"(black and white! new york city! jazz soundtrack!)"

the woody allen fetishism is so weird given the circumstances. takes one to know one, i guess.

scott seward, Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:40 (eight years ago)

So, ILX, you've heard the arguments. Now you get to decide!

Louie. First prominent Father of Daughter television show, or not? We'll take your answers in the order they arrive. Or you can drop us a postcard instead.

A is for (Aimless), Saturday, 11 November 2017 19:42 (eight years ago)

i actually stopped watching that seth macfarlane sci-fi show when he cast charlize theron as his love interest in an episode. the whole wish-fulfillment casting thing is so gross. no offense to charlize for taking the part. it just bugged me. he's not even an actor. such a huge vanity/ego thing.
